How can a small biz get the attention of corporate’s? (8 posts)

  • I have done some extensive research in this area but am interested to hear thoughts from others who have experience in working with large corporates. Specifically, do you think corporates will respond to a concept or proposal based on a cost benefit, competitive value, marketing or PR, or because they have to comply with legislation. What is most likely to get their attention and make them take action?

  • VALUE, VALUE, VALUE, You get anyone and everyones attention through value. Now, articulating that value is another piece. That is where taking risks and networking comes in. We are working with 3 larger companies, and honestly getting their attention was as simple as, I think this will benefit you by providing X, efficiently doing X, save you X amount of dollars. Then they will either give you the time or not even respond, if they do not respond then you do not fill a need, YET.

Helpful or am I off in terms of what you were asking?

  • @ryrussell. Helpful… sort of…. I guess communication is key. It’s getting a foot in the door that is more challenging. When we have an opportunity to demonstrate the value the benefits become obvious. The problem is the concept is very topical and there are many myths surrounding it. This means the minute they hear the word they often switch off because it is not something they know enough about and as a result don’t believe in. It’s kind of like trying to convince someone of the benefits of faith when they’ve never had any exposure to church. It’s really hard convincing them unless they are open to listening. So my real question I guess is what will make corporates open to listening in the first place?

  • NOTHING, wakes up any business more than government! So not sure why you brought up the legislation word in your question, but if you’ve got an angle from that end, if the businesses you are prospecting for must comply with some regulation and you can help them jump through hoops more effectively or easier or cheaper, then by all means use that as your first big carrot. No business or corporation likes dealing with government legislation and would rather pay someone else than pay the government.

  • @atlantarobin Thanks Robin. Yes legislation compliance is what I have on my side. Kind of feel like an insurance salesperson playing that card though. But I have to be smart and go with the strongest strategy. Thanks for the feedback.

  • Find the person who will make the decision in the corporation. When you send out your introductory letter, address it to that person.  Don’t address it to Manager of … If not that person, find the person under or over that person.  Gain some insight into the company that way.  You have to find the need and then address that need.  Does the corporation have the need you can fill.  Is there a burning platform…..you find that…show you can fill the need and you have their attention.  Networking is the way to go with corporations.  Think about what @ryrussell said.

  • Create something of great quality and you will be summoned.
