Higher Priority? (11 posts)

  • What should be of a higher priority when implementing a website…building for the end user experience or building for the search engines? If you had to sacrifice(to a degree) one for the other what would it be?

  • End user for sure. You can use best practice for the search engines but at the end of the day, it’s going to be users who buy from you, NOT google bots :)

  • dont see how its  either or, i hope for the  right words[for the search engine]  and a  beautiful  tempting  experience  also[pictures and presentation]…

.but i would say search engine…since thats how the  customer  would find you… but if they  find you and its boring  then   whats the point?

  • Yep – @jake-hower called this one spot on.

The thing is, you don’t have to sacrifice one for the other.  A row of ducks can line up righrt next to a row of penguins and be quite happy.  Birds of a different feather don’t have to live on the same island to get along.  :D

  • @mtheory Why sacrifice either? Although they have different focus, they combine quite nicely on a site and blend beautifully. It not about either or. It’s about both and more.

  • @mtheory

When you’re doing it right, you don’t have to sacrifice one for the other.

  • @mtheory I agree with everyone that says you need to do both, and it can be done.

  • Hi there Mark,I think people can make it seem a lot simpler than it is when writing content. The other members are right, you need to achieve that balance between SEO and good content, however unless writing is a skill the balance can often be difficult to achieve. I can certainly see the point to your question.

These days, we have so many other areas that will assist with SEO, obviously social media being a significant one. I would always strive for the seo/content balance, but if it is a struggle write for the visitor (and remember to keep it between 80 and 200 words for optimal indexing).

    All the best MarkTracey

  • End user experience is more than just writing. It’s where your call to action is placed, the size of your font, the scanability of your content, the color and type of font your website utilizes. End user experience is all about making it easy for the reader to find, read and use a website. @mtheory

  • and  dont  forget the main thing…..you have to  have   what the  user  wants and is looking for…..  in other words  you  can do all the tekk stuff right and  still  fail if  you have the wrong   inventory for the  buyer…

. @amyhallbiz great point on the easy part….i think i read we were  giving  places  an even shorter time to   catch our attention….

  • @annfurnivall When a person uses a website they shouldn’t have to think about where or what to do next. It should be easy and clear what the next action you want them to take is.Reading on the interwebs is so hard on your eyes. The easier you make it for the reader to do the next thing, the more likely they are to do it.
