Have you backed up your email list? (8 posts)

  • I just read an interesting email newsletter from Chris Brogan.

What grabbed me was a little line that said something like this, “Never trust email providers to keep your list safe.”

Then BOOM, I realized I have not downloaded our 120,000 email subscriber list from Aweber.  This is a good reminder… HAVE BACKUPS

    Do you have backups?

  • Um, I do now! And by now I mean in five minutes.

I tell people all the time, your email list is your most valuable asset. The value of a 5K mailing list is 10x or more the value of a 5K Twitter following or Facebook fan base.

It’s too easy to ignore someone in social media, but if you’ve gotten someone to subscribe to an opt-in email list, even if they’re too busy to listen to you now they at least have to click “delete”, meaning you’ve made an impression.

Whenever I push a webinar through my email list it sells at a much higher rate than any of my other channels.

    Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks Rich.  And be sure to @tag your replies otherwise the author never realizes you replied

A very good reminder Mike. I’ve lost subscribers to a mail host.. and it’s painful!

  • oooh, good one @mike-stelzner, didn’t even think of creating a back-up there. Whew!

  • @Michael Stelzner, How do you do this?  Great topic for social media examiner to post, is there one? Thanks in advance!

  • @charlynshelton-socialmediainterpreter

It pretty much is a feature with most email providers

I back up our growing list every week as a csv. We use constant contact and it’s real simple to do. But you are right, never trust them. They have hardware/software failures sometimes. I have seen it happen first hand.

Besides, I feel it’s my responsibility to make sure I have my list, not theirs.
