Has anyone used Freelancer?… (4 posts)

  • or one of the other bid for projects outsourcing sites. If so, I am curious as to what the results were, pleased ?, quality design, project completed on time, any scope creep, etc.

I am in the process of creating a deals & coupons site (with other elements that make it unique). Already have a linkshare account (for affiliate deal feeds), and plan to create more affiliate relationships once the site is live. Want to hire out the initial site design so I have a polished looking page with the core elements in place for automation and live data feed. My primary role would be promoting the site, keeping deals up to date while searching out new relevant content and partnerships.

Anyone have any suggestions or feedback? I am in dire need of assistance as this is my first undertaking of this sort. Thanks in advance -

    Cheers,

    David

Take this with a grain of salt, since in my other life I run a web design shop.

My experience has been decidedly mixed. It certainly cheaper to go with the outsourced solution, but if the person is remote you’re at their mercy.

I’ve had more than one contractor go awol on me, leaving me to clean up their mess, throw a ton of money at the job to keep the client happy, etc.

That being said, over the years I’ve developed really good relationships with a handful of local and remote people–designers, copywriters, programmers–who I trust and consider a part of our family. They cost more than I would pay at an eLance, but the finished product is worth it.

If you really want to keep prices down, why not choose WordPress and one of their free or inexpensive design templates? Then find someone you trust to handle some hourly maintenance work?

A local designer was my other consideration – I like the idea of building a long term relationship and having more flexibility / communication along the way. Certainly don’t want to clean up a mess and burn thru cash along the way.

I will investigate the WordPress templates and checkout their widgets and automation capabilities. Thanks Rich for the excellent advice!

  • I used to be a designer on guru.com.  There, I’ve admitted it.  :)

Here’s my impression from that side of the fence.  A lot of really low-ball competition.  When I was a freelance designer, it was a good way to pick up some extra jobs.  Once I had enough clients under my belt, it became too much of a hassle with the bidding and impermanent relationships.  It seems like many of those outsourcing services cater to new and unestablished designers looking to get a start.

But you can get some really inexpensive work done if you are willing to manage folks who may not have a lot of professional experience.
