Google Voice-Do you use it? (26 posts)

Topic tags: Google voice, Google+, VOIP
  • Several months ago, I started using Google Voice, and almost immediately began wondering how many others used it.

I’ve discovered that using it is entirely transparent to the person on the other end of the call and it offers almost everything regular service does, and some things regular service doesn’t offer.

I can selectively choose which callers get forwarded to my cell phone, I get transcripts of calls, I can set up different numbers for Customer Service, Sales or messaging.

I can have different voice-mail messages for different people depending on whether the caller is a friend or business associate.

    It’s a built-in PBX!

With a headset and microphone, I can place calls from my laptop as long as I have an internet connection.

    Check it out for yourself.

  • @warrenveach Love Google Voice. Been using it for my business for two years. Love the unlimited space, getting your own number to match your name or preferred sequence of numbers, love that I can email and save the voicemails for future reference, love the call widget I installed on my website.

  • @maricochran

Oh, I forgot about the call widget!

“You can allow others to call you from your website or blog by adding a voicemail widget to it. Visitors to the website can click the widget, enter their phone number, and Google Voice will call them and connect the call to your Google number.

Sounds like nothing but love for Google Voice from you!

  • @warrenveach And, I love that you can forward voicemails to anyone and they don’t have to have Google Voice installed to hear the messages. As you can see, I love it.

  • @warrenveach I have a Google Voice number but can’t say that I really “use” it much. My brother, however, really likes the features especially now as an entrepreneur. Thank you for the helpful links. I’ll check them out over the weekend!

As a test, last month I set aside my cell and used GV exclusively.

I routed all my texts and calls though it, and the only time I had an issue was when I was at a remote location (Starbucks) and was using it through their WiFi connection.

There was a bit of a delay, but that had more to do with the connection rather than GV itself.

  • alas, it’s only free to the US. :(

  • This is a great thread.  I’ve been wondering about Google Voice and this gives me great data to go on.  Thanks everyone!

  • @warrenveach Texts work too? I wondered if it had that capability. I learned about Google Voice the second time while I was job hunting. He said that you can put the number anywhere and not worry about your cell number getting out. (A little late for me!)

Can you turn off the option of having callers state their name? Or does Google need that for the voicemail transcription?

  • @kc_kreative

Yes, you can use a “standard” greeting, or you can customize the greeting just like you would on your cell/home phone.

When you miss a call, or someone leaves a message, you are automatically notified by email in your Gmail account.

Texts work just like usual, and you can use your keyboard instead of try to type on the phone. For someone like me with FFS (Fat Finger Syndrome), that’s great!

  • @warrenveach Thanks. I did get a Google VM yesterday. What’s interesting, I get the similar functionality with my company’s VOIP (iCore). A WAV file is sent by email and you can forward the office number if you’re traveling or working from home.

  • @kc_kreative

What I think is fun, is when Google transcribes the message into text. Its hilarious to read the transcript, then listen to the message to hear the actual message.

Its not an exact science, but the transcripts are close enough to get the jest of the conversation.

  • @warrenveach I know! The transcript was funny :-)

  • @warrenveach

Compared to you I’m barely scratching the surface!

However, here’s how I use it:

Only I call it. Whenever I have a “brilliant” idea I call GV and leave myself a message. Whenever I get back to email it’s waiting there for me, completely transcribed.

    Brilliant.

I only wish they had numbers in the 207 area code (Maine’s ONLY area code.) Then I’d use it as my regular number.

  • @rich-brooks

That’s a great idea. I’ll think I’ll call myself and remind me to leave a message for me with my next great idea.

Now all I have to do is have a great idea! :-)

I’m surprised they don’t have a 207 number available. I wonder if that’s an oversight, or due to a technical issue?

    @kc_kreative @dianebianchi @maricochran

  • No, stop the insanity!!! I can’t have another “toy” to play with! Love, love love the idea of being able to call myself with ideas and have it transcribed. Dragon dictate leaves funny transcriptions, too but it is way too slow. I will try this, though. Let me just add 3 hours to the day.@warrenveach @rich-brooks

  • It’s a lifesaver for me. I can be abroad and still have a US phone number. Don’t know what I would do without it honestly…

  • I really haven’t used it for business.. thanks for the insights guy.Since I have two sons in the military it’s a great way to call and the prices are relatively inexpensive.

  • When Google V first came out I got a number and did nothing with it. Based on all this discussion I need to find the number and check it out closer. @robpeck that is a great idea. Last year I was out of the country and no phone service. Internet yes, phone no.  @deairby I leave my self messages on my cell phone all the time but good suggestion to try this.

  • @deairby …I understand the time issue, but can a person ever have too many toys??

@robpeck ….Another great idea! I don’t go abroad often at all, but having a US phone # is just another great way to utilize GV.

@localbusinessco ….It’s good to have a way to stay in touch. Thanks to your sons for their service.

  • I too thank you for your sons’ service @localbusinessco

  • @trudy I can’t underscore enough how much of a lifesaver this is. I’m in India for the foreseeable future, clients are muuuch more comfortable knowing they can call me on the same ol’ US number.

As an aside, it is crazy how many more hoops foreign users must go through when signing up for Google services. So many more hoops to jump through.

  • @warrenveach, I’ve used GV for a number of years as my business line since I work between two places – mainly my office in town, but an home now & then.

I love the fact that I can forward calls to any other phone, & the transcripts that I get by text, while many times very funny & rough are close enough to know whether I need to return the call sooner (client with more urgent needs), or later.

I have yet to ditch my cell phone, but like the idea of a headset & mic to make calls right from the computer. Great concept!

  • Thanks for the discussion on GV. Haven’t tried it but was having a discussion with a client this evening about using it.

  • Just got an account a few weeks ago. Still trying to figure out all the things I can do with GV. I love all the pointers on this feed.

  • @designbykiltz

I do want to say that it doesn’t completely replace the cell phone, but it is an option to use when you are on a computer or in one spot.

The disadvantage is that with the headset/mic, you are pretty much stuck where you are until the conversation is finished.

I definitely use GV more for inbound calls forwarded to my cell rather then outbound calls.
