Google Toolbar, Adobe Reader & Computer Crash? (6 posts)

  • Google Toolbar, Adobe Reader & Computer Crash?

I just spent the last two weeks trying to yank my computer back from the grips of Google Toolbar and its notification system and other downloads that sneaked in for a tagalong ride on an Adobe Reader download. OMG, it totally crashed my system and though I’ve got things running again, I cannot get Adobe Reader to install passed 40% after I downloaded again. What a mess.

Also, it slowed everything to a crawl, couldn’t see any video for more than a few seconds, and could not even get this SME site to send a message or post on a forum.

This is an Acer Aspire 5100 using Internet Explorer 8. I had to downgrade everything to even get it to run.

Has the Google Toolbar or notification system affected anyone else like this?

  • @atlantarobin A while back I had problems with Google toolbar, so I avoid it now, especially since I am in a Windows environment (not sure if that’s the problem, but since there is no love lost…

But, I recently had a quirky issue when I upgraded my Adobe reader, and it knocked out our ability to print pdfs. We had to download a patch and say a voodoo chant to get it to work again.

I can say this is the type of stuff that drives me crazy

  • Joan, it has corrupted some of my pdf files, too. I had to download a stand-in pdf reader on the fly. Haven’t tried printing yet. Ok, I am so NOT ready to find out it has caused even more problems.

So can you share a wee bit of your voodoo chant with me? I’m about to get the vapors and all teary eyed if one more thing happens to shut me, my computer, and my business down this week.

    Chant, anyone?

  • <Macs are great>I switch (back) to Macintosh again a year ago and do not ever have problems like that. And PDF printer/reader is built-in to the Mac OS X operating system so it works smoothly and blazingly fast. I know it doesn’t help you, but over 25 years, I’ve used Mac on/off for about 7 years. Its by far better and more stable than Windows on a PC. </Macs are great>

    YMMV.

  • @atlantarobin I have not had that particular problem but I began have problems after downloading an update a month ago for Adobe Reader  That and the fact I use AOL, combined to take control of my computer and could not get Internet Explorer.  Deleted Adobe Reader, tried to delete AOL but it would not let me.  I then spent almost 2 days running, on the weekend, all sorts of stuff to clean out files, etc and defrag.  That finally cured the problems. But it was frustrating. I have a Tech Comp. to fall back on and if I have not cured the problem, on Monday the computer was going to them.

  • @robmitchell I’m a Mac baby, too, Rob. Bought my first MacSE in 1986 and finally broke down and disposed of it only a few months ago, lol. Hard to let go…

I now have a MiniMac… love that little box as it will fit in my pocketbook. But its not a laptop and needs a monitor, and can’t fit a monitor in my purse, lol.

So I finally broke down and bought a laptop a couple weeks ago. All was fine, until that dang Adobe Reader and Google Toolbar download reaked havoc.

@trudy Trudy, it sounds like you and I had similar problems… and AOL amplified mine to OMG proportions! Nasty little creatures. Those three programs are like Alien, with tentacles so deep into your computer that you can’t pry them apart with a crowbar.

Trudy, can you tell me what the deal is with AOL and sucking all your memory until it makes your computer as slow as molasses? It did it again tonight, as I was trying to get rid of the 4,000+ emails (embarrassing, I know) that are stuffed in one of my AOL email accounts. The more I deleted, the slower it got. Then it finally froze everything. Cleaning and defragging took two hours. Geez, I’m tired of this.

So do yall know what the underlying cause is with AOL so I can try to prevent this memory sapping slowdown again?
