Google+ For Business and Facebook Business Pages (6 posts)

  • Just read up the development regarding Google’s foray into offering Google+ for Business.

I can understand the need for corporations to hedge their bets by doing business pages BOTH on Google+ and on Facebook.

However, as a small martial arts business owner (teaching out of a community center but hoping to have my own school in the near future), will it make sense to be running both Google+ for Business and a Facebook Business Page? My customer base is not exactly vast if you get the drift.

So I wonder if I would be overwhelming my customers by offering both pages.

What are the pros and cons of doing both? Thoughts from a small business owner perspective?

    Thanks,
    Brian

I believe you should focus on getting good at one platform before doing two.

Depending on your business, you may see better results with one or the other.

Another option would be to post the same content to both platforms (saving you time) and see which gets better engagement, and which drives more traffic to your website (or store.)

Ultimately, G+ may have more impact on your SEO than Facebook, so keep that in mind if SEO is part of your marketing requirements.

  • @rich-brooks Thanks for confirming my thoughts on this matter. I’d rather focus on becoming good at a few things before spreading myself out too thin when building awareness of my business.

  • I agree with @rich-brooks.  Now that I’ve got my Facebook page set up and going, I’m expanding into Google+ both personally and with my business.

I have to agree with both Rich & Mandy. And, will add one more thought. It’s not so much a broad customer base, but who is your target market, & what medium are they on? If the majority are on Google+, then start there – but, like most average consumers, you’ll probably find them on Facebook. Make that your focus for interaction with potential clients, & like Mandy mentioned, use Google+ to position yourself & also as a listening tool. Because it’s Google, it will affect your rankings sooner rather than later.

  • Here is how I see them.

Sharing your content on facebook is like standing in the middle of the mall and talking to no one in particular. People can see you talking as they walk by, but hardly anyone will stop and interact with you–except those that are in your inner circle.

Sharing content on Google plus is like attending a sit-down dinner party. Some of the guests could be total strangers to you, but you can be sure that there is going to be a lot of engagement going to happen.

I have observed that g+ members actively interact with the community. They share, +1, and comment more often than their facebook counterparts. I also noticed that most of them are early adopters of technology and are active in social media. There is a good chance that the number of these g+ natives are influential with their own social networks.

If you want to build credibility by word of mouth, I will recommend that you establish yourself first with g+. Make yourself a valued member of that community. You can maintain a FB fan page on the side, but give more attention engaging with the g+ community.
