Google+ for Business (53 posts)

  • I’m curious what plans small business owners have with Google+.  This is a topic that I’m focused on studying and writing about right now, and wanted to see how B2B and B2C companies are planning on using this new social network.

  • @mikedelgadodigitalmarketer great questions Mike!

Please let me know if you know of any small businesses that are doing cool stuff on Google+

  •  I wrote about Google Plus Pages for business this week for Media Tapper. I think it is a platform that every business should strongly consider but they need to have a strategy in place before they jump in.

Have a read and let me know your thoughts:

    http://mediatapper.com/5-things-you-must-do-to-be-successful-with-google-plus-pages/

  • @mikedelgadodigitalmarketer, I’m on the fence with G+. As a search engine marketer, I know it’s going to impact my search visibility, so I can’t ignore it. However, I just don’t know if there’s going to be a mass exodus from Facebook to G+.

I’m also curious about other small business and how they’re using G+. If you’re using it and you’ve generate leads or business, please let us know!

BTW, here’s the link to the video on G+ business pages I showed in the webinar yesterday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHYCfBKB8XA&feature=channel_video_title

  • Hi @mikedelgadodigitalmarketer no doubt that G+ will become a major player in 2012. At the moment it still is in the early stages, and I think we are still in early adaptation phase there.

For me G+ is something in between Facebook and LinkedIn. I really enjoy how you can organize your network in Circles. Really cool. Great way to capture leads if you use Google Forms with closed circles.

Their chat works for me better then Facebook chat. And their Hangouts is really great.

Hopefully they will open for more applications. And from my perspective I hope they will find some ways to apply Google Hotel Finder plus booking engines for their business pages.

But I am sure they will add some awesome features in next phase of their development of G+.

I did see that Cris Brogan already has released a book; Google+ For Business: How Google’s Social Network Changes Everything. Gutsy move from Chris this early in the game.

    Cheers..

  • @AreMorch,

I’m with you in how I place Google+ in the social space.  I’m excited to see how Google implements integration with other products.  I’d imagine for you, the Hotel Finder would be huge.

While I’m enjoying G+, I ebb and flow in activity there.  This area of the US is a tad behind the coasts.  A fair amount of people still flinch when I say, “Twitter.”

So, we can continue to warm the fire.

The chat – I really need to jump in and play around there a bit more.  Are you, specifically, using it with clients?

    Great seeing you here, Are!

    ~Keri

  • @connectyou :) Great to see you here also Keri.

Yeah my area is also in the learning process. Most players here is either on eBay or Etsy. Out of all thing it seems like location based services has helped create more awareness about Social Media here. So locally 4SQ is a must for me.

I am really excited to see all the cool integrations and improvements from Google. Ideally I would like to have it all controlled from one dashboard. Google works very good as a CRM for me. Though they have their own CRM solution for businesses, I am able to go a long way with they provide us.

So far I mostly played around with their chat and hangouts. This is something I will use a lot more next year. On Facebooks chat channel I got flooded with spams, so there I had to turn it off. Not sure yet if their SSL requirements implemented the chat channel. When I see all the spams that still drops in my Messanger there I doubt so.

Have not got very many requests related to G+ yet. But most of the major players in my industry is now starting come on there. It for sure helped when they made G+ Pages available for everyone.

So will most definitive apply strategies for Google+ in my 2012 plans.

    Cheers…

  • @fierce_living @rich-brooks Thanks for the links!  We rather jumped in the deep end before we knew we could swim and so this will be a big help.  How to get people to include us in their circles, and how to organise our own circles is something we really need to know more about.
    Lizzie.

  • If you’re a business you can only add people to your circle who have added you to theirs. (Which is a bit frustrating.)

I would use my personal G+ account and other channels (social media, email, etc.) to promote your G+ business page.

BUT HERE’S THE DEAL: Don’t bother sending people to yet another social media outpost unless you have some reason to send them there!

Always be providing quality content. Hope that helps!

  • Thanks for all this great feedback everyone. :)   Google+ is a fascinating social network, and I’m spending time studying how people and businesses are using it. I’m expecting big things in the future, and really excited to see Google+ continue to grow into one of the top 5 social networks.  It’s amazing to see adoption rates, and can’t wait to see what happens next.

  • One thing I have noticed about G+ is that it seems more visual. The pictures are bigger and the videos are right there. I think this could be a great platform for small businesses to communicate via images and videos.

  • Hi Mike,

My business contacts are mostly on Linkedin B2B yet all of their customers are on Facebook and Twitter. Goggle + seems to be a cross between Linkedin and Facebook as Are Morch pointed out earlier. To me social is all about learning and experimenting, of course, this is not what the big brands want to hear. I like the excitement of RISK and being the first at bat, go big or go home!

This is a great post, perhaps you could break it into two parts:

What to do on Google plus!  What not to do on Google plus!

  • @rich-brooks You mention not adding yet another SM option unless it’s worthy of someone’s time. Though I’m part of a medium-sized PBS station, we have a VERY small staff and even smaller department. It mostly boils down to me and one other posting on FB or Twitter. Would you recommend jumping into G+ now while it’s in the early stages so that we’re more stable when individuals flock to us as it grows?

  • @jessiespringer

My gut says no, but someone yesterday gave me the best argument possible for using G+, so I’m hesitant to give you my initial response.

I might start by using G+ as another channel to distribute your content. Hootsuite just release the ability to post to G+ this week I believe, so maybe look at that.

If you see engagement there, then go to your bosses for them to allocate some additional resources.

Does NPR have a national plan for G+?

  • @fierce_living Thank you for the information.  Very helpful.  I am still weighing the options.

@rich-brooks I am going to watch your video.

Thank you all for your help.

I am really enjoying this new group.

  • @rich-brooks Thanks for the advice. I don’t currently use Hootsuite either but am realizing what a valuable tool that can be. The SEO G+ offers is attractive to us…but I know there have to be other benefits to creating a page. Thus, we will give it a go and see how viewers respond!

As for NPR having a plan, we are not affiliated so I am unaware of anything they may have in place. As for PBS, I receive emails with sample SM posts – it seems their efforts are heavy on FB and Twitter.

  • @mikedelgadodigitalmarketer

I’m interested in finding out when the adoption of G+ is to the point where people can actively engage on it. I’m finding many people marketing, but is the business owner plugged in?

    :) Christy

  • Hi Guys Love Google Hangouts think small biz can use the tool . Made a video blog today Hope you like it http://youtu.be/wNEhXjBgL5M

  • I’m playing with G+ for business.  One question: it seems the biz profile has to be connected to an individual’s profile.  Is there any way to have multiple administrators?

    Enjoying everyone’s comments here!

    Susan

  • I’m still on the fence honestly. But I have to say I really appreciate you sharing the different links, articles, and videos – very helpful.Helping clients focus is such a challenge – they want to use everything and then tend to strand some of their social media properties – sometimes doing more harm than good.Adding another property can be dangerous without a clear business objective.

  • @swrightboucher

Hi Susan. There is no admin function yet but rumors are it’s coming shortly. In the mean time it’s an excellent idea to get on Google Plus with your own profile and get to know the environs. I highly recommend getting involved in hangouts as it is a great way to meet people with similar interests.

Once you familiarize yourself with the Google Plus features it will be easy to see all of the business applications that will arise. Google Plus will allow you to engage with customers, suppliers, fans etc in a way that’s unprecedented.

  • Susan,Google now allows for more than one administrator for Google Plus pages.http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/12/google-few-big-improvements-before-new.html

  • @alremetch That’s great news!  Thanks for sharing, Al.

  • @swrightboucher From my research on G+ for business there is not currently a way to have multiple administrators for a page. From my understanding this is something that is in the works but currently if you want to share access to the page the individual account login must be shared (which brings up privacy and security issues potentially).

  • @alremetch Thank you for sharing the update! That is great news!

  • @alremetch Have you set up managers on your Google+ pages? I have been trying to figure out how to add managers but I cannot find the “Settings” button referenced by Google Help at http://support.google.com/plus/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2380626. Have you had any luck?

  • @alexandrabriggs  An expert that I trust also reported that he wasn’t able to find a way to set up additional administrators either.  Maybe Google’s press release was premature.

Apologies to all for multiple post above to answer the same question.  I didn’t see them appearing and thought they weren’t posting.  I just guess the system was slow and I got impatient.

  • @alremetch Thank you for the update! I was able to access the settings and add managers yesterday. I haven’t received any “accepted” manager information but I was able to send the invites. Thank you for the follow up!

  • @rich-brooks It will be hard for businesses to ignore G+ with all their products, and weaving in search, which is the main reason. It will be a challenge for small business to carve out the time as they expand to G+ and other Social Sites. At some point the time invested has to show a return.
Big brands that have jumped into G+ Pages, now in it’s sixth week, Top 10 Brands on Google+.

  • @swrightboucher Google+ just rolled out the new multiple admin feature Page Notifications and some others.

  • @blairevanball This is great news for all of us!  Thanks

  • @mikedelgadodigitalmarketer

As far as i have noticed, in special concern with small business owners, this wonderful google+ tool seems to be somewhat of new flavor. The small business owners are on the one hand much enthusiastic about using this as a CRM tool but on the other hand, being a newbie in the Social media world, google+ is seen as a less used counterpart of famous Social media tool facebook and that’s the reason why even if google+ is now available for business houses (that is google+ brand pages) it hasn’t been that much used…thanks

  • I actually used circles on G+ to create a customer focus group and the amount of feedback I got from the people in that circle was amazing. I learned so much about the people who listened to my podcast. Using circles is a great way to learn about your customers and I’d recommend creating a circle specifically for your biggest fans. If you do want to run a focus group I’d recommend the following

    1. Decide on your objective
    2. Figure out what questions will help you achieve that objective
    3. Offer participants an incentive
    4. Take action on your insights
I’m working on a more in-depth blog post on this at the moment. I noticed somebody earlier had mentioned admin functionality and not sure if anybody answered. Just this week G+ rolled out the ability to add 50 administrators to your business page.

  • @swrightboucher  Google is now allowing page admins to have up to 50 managers on a page.  This will help a page become more effective at managing and producing content 24/7.  To add admins, here is the process:

    • After logged into your page, click on the gear icon (top-right corner)
    • Click “Managers” button on left-hand side
    • Add email address of another Google+ members in the “Add managers by email” box
    • Click “Invite”
Now we’re just waiting on page analytics. :)

  • @mikedelgadodigitalmarketer, thanks so much for including the steps.  Very helpful.

  • @swrightboucher  Glad you found it helpful.  Not sure if you’ll find this helpful, but I recently wrote an article to help page admins optimize their pages in Google+ here:http://www.circled.us/pages/optimize-business-profiles/ Let me know if you have any questions. :)

  • @mikedelgadodigitalmarketer, Your article is really impressive.  I haven’t seen most of those tips before.  I’ve bookmarked it as a must read for the team.

Thanks for the time investment you made.

    Susan

  • I have a Google +  Business page so I can be found if anyone is looking there.I also have added a Google + badge to my website which is definitely a boon to my websites SEO. i am not as active on Google + but then again it’s mostly early adopters.  I am looking forward to using the Hangout feature.

  • Google+ business pages are definitely a good thing and I think a better platform for presenting a blog post than FB. However I still think the crowd is so much smaller on G+ than FB that you really have to tailor the content. G+ is a different crowd entirely, I don’t think that the FB style will work there so you have to watch what you post.

Some businesses just don’t get it and create a G+ page with an intro that tells them to go to their FB page. How horrible is that?

    https://plus.google.com/u/0/101931518264805290221/posts

Sad sad. That link goes to Seattle’s Best coffee. Seattle’s Best is owned by SBucks, you’d think they have better social media brains than that but this shows how hard it can be for some companies to adopt.

  • You need a G+ page for the future SEO possibilities, it’s as simple as that. Google will be indexing less FB pages in favour of their own properties.

They will also be indexing posts to capture the real-time factor that used to be filled by tweets.  The last algorithm saw Google focus on not just relevance but how current the content was. There is nothing worse than reading something that is out of date – no matter how popular that post was when it was originally published.

  • @swrightboucher glad you found it helpful. I’m continuing to expand content on the blog to help others with managing their Google+ page.

  • @aremorch,

Interesting to see your response – Sorry to keep you waiting for so long…

The Ebay & Etsy platforms do not appeal to me.  I know these are the rage for some….but I have not really jumped in, and really my niche does not really demand it.

But I do love Foursquare for it’s location-based marketing capability for brick & mortars along with their analytics dashboard.  As a user, I like that I can exchange tips, but more — I can decide who and where sees my check-in.  This is not present on Facebook.

In fact, I favor Facebook less and less — never really liked their chat options.  I end up on Skype, though G+ hangouts has been helpful.  I also see more and more over on Google+, though not from my immediate geographic location.

Lets see what G+ has in store for 2012.  Maybe we can hangout sometime! :)

See you at a #LinkedInChat soon?

    ~Keri

  • Hi @connectyou

A lot of craftsmanship in my area here in MS. I once did get myself certified as an eBay trainer. But did not really speak to my DNA. So was added to the file of learning experience.

And like your niche there is very little demand for this type of service in my niche.

Since Mobile/Tablets is one of the trends that we anticipate will make a major impact on my niche this year location based services will play a bigger role for me.

We will see more industry specific apps that will add value to the guest experience evolve this year. Have some apps that shown some interest in partnership, and when I go behind the scenes some has looked really awesome.

For us in the Hotel Family Reputation Management is very important, and I look into apps that cover the hole specter of valuable touch points both for the guest and the Hotel Owners.

And 2012 will be a year where I will focus a lot on touch point services. Room-77 was one of the really creative services we saw pop up last year that captured this idea.

Like you I have used Skype more then hangouts. Yes, lets do a hangout this year. Even if we are in different niches, no doubt we can learn from each other.

My wife had been off here the last week and today, so my brain is in not switched into work mode yet..lol.. But I will be there on #LinkedInChat.

    Cheers..

  • I really like how G+ pages look and the potential for hangouts, chat and more are outstanding. Also, the integration w/ Chrome browser via extensions simplifies things. IMO, this will be a must for SEO so why wait?

Apologies if these questions have already been answered but I have started using HootSuite and did not see G+ as an available network, but have just submitted an application to add it to the dashboard. Does anyone know if this is only through a paid subscription?

Also interested in folks opinions on how valuable and meaningful content on G+ would differ from other social mediums, in particular, your FB posts?

    Many thanks.

  • @mikedelgadodigitalmarketer @mike-stelzner I was thinking about using Google + for customer support. Like using their meeting place as customer support. What do you think? Good or bad idea?

  • @lisagrover

Currently only HootSuite Enterprise users have access to Google+ integration. You can get on the “waiting list” for Google+ if you are under other HootSuite functionality. I use HootSuite Pro and I look forward to the G+ addition.

In regard to use of G+ I have done some cross-posting of materials I post to Facebook but I have actually developed some postings specifically for the G+ audience and tried to generate +1′s. I highly recommend adding the Google+ button to your website to generate followers if you haven’t done so already!

  • Yes. Having Hootsuite to manage your G+ account is a $1500 proposition. I’m not so sure if using such a tool will be so useful on the site. Pumping out content that attracts clients without the interaction Google Plus affords may just bring frustration. There is a lot of competition on a consistent basis as far as content goes. It may require more moderation to be effective. I’m sure that depends on what your message is, of course.

I thought I’d share a link to a thread that is very interesting along the lines of this discussion. It’s my opinion that you should jump on Google as fast as you can, but I’m not a Social Media expert. Anyway, Denis Labelle is a good person to follow, as he advocates for business on G+ regularly. >>>https://plus.google.com/u/0/108384201920217141722/posts/MuD7QN9kY2F

  • @cmichaelcroston

Thank you for sharing the post from Denis!  I now following him on Google+. The post was helpful and I completely agree that Google+ is something to get on board with right away!

  • @alexandrabriggs @cmichaelcroston Thanks so much for confirming what I suspected re: HootSuite and G+.

Also, the link to Denis Labelle is much appreciated as I continue to learn effective Google+ usage for business. We are set up, and linked to our site but haven’t done much in the way of content just yet.

  • I would like to hear any stories of how to implement google hangouts and how it may have shown real benegfits to anyones business or lifestyle.

  • @srinivasrao Great idea with the focus groups! Everyone has contributed nicely to this thread. Don’t forget SME’s latest post: 5 Ways to Use Google+ to Improve Your Search Engine Optimization ;-)

  • @durkbarton I’ve used Google+ hangout to collaborate with some fellow social media consultants while we were working on a podcast agenda. What I found very helpful was the ability to share docs and screenshots. The notepad function was cool as well as we could all add notes or make changes.

Here is a post that I came across recently that summarizes some of the benefits.Collaborate instantly with Google Docs Draw together with Sketch upShare Your Screen with one clickTraining

Another big advantage is that a business can manage participants with the circles feature. For a Hangout 101, try this link:Google+ Hangouts: The complete how-to

  • Thanks Ray,

I wasn’t aware that Google+ had those collaboration features. I will have to give it a closer look. This will help me with infusing other artists into my projects.
