Giving credit where credit is due. (7 posts)

  • Hey all -

There have been a lot of questions regarding sharing images/content on Facebook and Pinterest.  I found a great post from Hubspot on how to credit the original owner.  So if you find something great you want to share, here’s how to do it - http://blog.hubspot.com/blog/tabid/6307/bid/33098/How-Not-to-Steal-People-s-Content-on-the-Web.aspx

  • @iamconsulting Thanks for sharing. I do my best to cite my sources whenever possible. Some sites do not make it easy to share however by hiding their social media icons or preferred name (i.e. some publications).

  • OooooWeeee! I followed the links Hubspot gave for a great locator of CC-Creative Commons materials…  http://search.creativecommons.org/
And came across http://ccmixter.org … an awesome little music find packed with CC material. Just watch out for the “no commercial use” ban on individual tracks.
And… found a great little tune (free to post, but not for commercial purposes) called “All for Free” by Zep Hurme… Kind of a theme song for free creative commons content with a great beat :) . Catchy tune/rap!
    Here’s the page… http://ccmixter.org/files/zep_hurme/38531
And the copy/paste “info” given for the appropriate attribution… (not sure what this code will do when I hit the post button here, but we shall see):

    <div xmlns:cc=”http://creativecommons.org/ns#” about=”urn:sha1:ROHX7EL7YWFQNQCWKN5BECVWTQOYSOCS”><a rel=”cc:attributionURL” property=”cc:attributionName” href=”http://ccmixter.org/files/zep_hurme/38531″> Zep Hurme</a> / <a rel=”license” href=”http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/”>CC BY-NC 3.0</a></div>

  • OK, all my techy rescue heroes here on SME… what and how are you suppose to use that gobbledygook? If you go to the All For Free / Zep Hurme link, you’ll see the small CC button next to the tune info. Click it and it will take you to the attribution page. There you’ll see where it shows you how to attribute the song to Zep… and you get what I posted above.

So wassup? What do I do with it? Splain, anyone?

  • @atlantarobin

That looks like the embed code.  Essentially, you put that into the code of your site, exactly as posted, and you can use it.  It really depends on how your site is coded, if you use WordPress, it’s pretty simple.  On the page you plan to use the song, click on the HTML tab and paste that code in somewhere on the page.

  • Nichole, thanks for reminding me. I’m used to posting the embed code’s on my site, but forgot that since I’m not on my site here, it will only post the code, not the music here. More senior days and moments creeping in…
