getting the most from the forums? (18 posts)

  • How do you work with all the information on these forums? Do you have a system to get the most from these forums? Do you check in daily-more or less? Do you use the search bar to hunt for special interest? Do you just simply browse around until you find something of interest?

  • Dear Dea,

I misread it and thought you said ‘forms‘ like you had a form/checklist to keep track of all the posts.{-(
Seriously, I get an audible beep whenever someone posts to one of the clubs, I scan the question or topic and if it seems pertinent to MY needs, I will go and read what the gurus have contributed. As a CPA consulting with people who are troubled or just want a strategic plan to grow, I know very little but I am a sponge for the good stuff I can pass along, pawning it off as my brilliance.

If you have a method, please share it. I know of at least one other person overwhelmed by this SMM and SEO, and Facebook and Google+, and all the rest. As we Southerners say, “Be-a De-a, and help us.
Seize the day and make it extraordinary!!

  • @deairby its not that hard these days with fast WiFi everywhere and hitting a bunch of sites, FB, twitter quickly. I usually take a break like every 2 hours or so, stretch the legs, talk with folks, and check everything (like now).

No, I do not obsess late night in bed (yes, I have WiFi at home and cool laptop and iPhone) … I just unplug for a while.

Don’t know if that helps or not. YMMV. Find what works for you.

  • don’t I wish I had a FORM! to keep track of all the posts. I too am from the wonderful South!! and would be so kind as to oblige if only I could, bless my heart @jimpalmer Rob, I was asking specifically about how to maneuver these SME forums. But I do like how you deal with the whole bigger picture. :)  @robmitchell

  • @deairby I check in daily to the Clubs. I respond to the topics that interest me and I ask questions on occasion. In regards for searching the membership, I look for horse and animal peeps to connect to for the most part. I don’t accept all invites either esp. now that the Clubs are open to everyone. I really enjoy the body of knowledge that we’re building here. It’s like a mini-Wikipedia for business-minded folks.

  • Here and and on Facebook I turn off ALL notifications so I do not get emails or reminders. Come by a couple of times a day when it suits me. And it does suit my learning style. I remember a lot more from reading discussions than I would if I listened to the same information on a webinar.

  • @deairby I have SME new topics sent to my e-mail, where I can skim them and/or choose to reply. I never check on Sundays but on other days it’s usually when I am waiting for something else.

  • @deairby I also get new topics sent to my e-mail.  I read the comment and if I’m interested I go to the website and comment or save information I like with Evernote.  I usually accept friend requests unless it’s one of those bogus ones that have been showing up lately.  I also start a thread if I have a question on something.  It does eat up some time because there is so much information here!!

  • usually  i come in the morning  before  work and have a laptop on my lap  all night while watching the tube….. i  learn  a lot  in   the  conversations…and  really like hearing  opposing   sides to a  question…

i dont organize much, and  dont   see the point of   formal friends, and  dh made me take  notifications off our e mail….

..sometimes   i   take  some notes  to  later  show or  talk to my  main  web  worker     about…we have  2  blogs, a website and   facebook and pinterest….so i have pretty  broad  interests…

    im  thankful  for   this…

  • @deairby I get the email topic alerts and topics I want to follow. I try to participate a bit each day, but by necessity only respond to topics I feel are a) in my swim lane or b) ones I want to be part of for learning reasons.

I follow some in case it’s more information I can use.

I still don’t find the search function useful. My beef is that it really is difficult to go back and find what I thought I saw.

I have started keeping a list/document of Tools that have been recommended, so when I have a minute or a need, it’s easy to find.

This community has been a great resource and actually has been a validation as well. I don’t have a mega-rep (yet) so it is helpful to learn that I really know a lot of what others share. Also, I’ve found many people I now respect I would have likely never met, including you, @deairby.

  • thanks, Joan you are a …champ! @joanmuschampfagnani I like to call this place mikipedia for Michael  @kc_kreative what bogus ones? @dianebianchi

  • @deairby Bogus ones? Bwa ha ha! The ones with fake girly names who offer to exchange photos with you! I love hitting that ‘report’ button on them!

  • Like many of the folks here, I take breaks and check in.  I do this several times a day and unless there is some burning question I need to ask, I scan the threads to see if anything catches the eye.

One of the reasons I liked it here right away was the format. They’ve made the format exactly like forums have been for a very long time.  So the format is familiar and that makes for an easy transition into learning what’s what.  I have supposed they did this for a reason. That being, many people would be familiar and more comfortable right off the bat. Like me. Did I say that already? Heh.

I run kind of run fast and loose with social media. When working on intense projects with deadlines, social media has to take a backseat but still, when a break presents itself I scoot to those places online where I know some folks and feel comfortable. SME Clubs is such a place. Twitter is such a place for me too.

At any rate, I do have a daily schedule and that includes breaks. So when I grab a cup of tea, I check my twitter and here now too. Easy and fast, no pressure and fun to see what people are chatting about.

    :D

  • haven’t run across any of those…bad, bad moderator that I am!!! @abigailgorton

  • They friend you first then send you a private message…
    @deairby

  • @deairby Since my timezone lies in the beautiful center of Western Europe (Switzerland, to be precise), each morning I enjoy opening my mailbox and reading all of the discussions you folks had during the hours of my beauty sleep. Then I basically scan through the messages, post to discussions there is something meaningful left to say ;-) and hope that I am not the last and final one…

  • @deairby I guess @abigailgorton answered your question to me. I’ve gotten a couple of those.

  • @deairby I find that I start each day and end each day here. LOL It’s like candy!

I really like the comradeship here; great questions and just as great responses. I have not been able to gather and document the topics of interest as it is too much work. Not that I have enough on my plate as it is. ..sigh.

I have posts, friends, mentions all coming into a gmail account. I always answer the mentions asap. Then I answer any question that I think I can be helpful. In the mornings I will post a question that has had me pondering over night.
