Free Online Storage Space, Up to 50Gigs…What do you use? (11 posts)

  • OK so we all know important backups are, but many still wait for the fateful day that their PC or laptop crashes. I thought i would share a list of online storage websites that are free. From the popular to perhaps a few unknown.

    1. Dropbox -  2Gig Free (Up to 16 Gig with referrals )
    2. Google Drive   -  5Gig Free
    3. Skydrive  -  7Gig Free
    4. Minus  -  10Gig Free  (Up to 50 Gig with referrals )
    5. Ubuntu One   -  5Gig Free
    6. Sugarsync  -  5Gig Free
    7. ADrive  -  50Gig Free
    8. CX   -  10Gig Free
What do you use? and why? If you dont, its a good time to start. :)

  • I use Dropbox and Google Drive for sharing and Sugarsync for file backup. I love them all for various reasons.I also do a full system back up once a month to an external hard drive.

Funnily enough my laptop did just about die the other day (this will be hard drive #3 in less than 18 months) so even though I do back up often, it was a mad scramble to ensure I have everything backed up (even my bookmarks which I would be completely lost without, despite also having a delicious account).

I must say I’m pretty impressed with 50 gig free… I think I will have to check these others out!

  • Currently use Ubuntu One and Dropbox and sometimes Google Drive. I use Ubuntu on my laptop so the ubuntu one was a simple choice.

  • I use Dropbox for storage.  I use Carbonite for backup, though it’s not free but it’s very inexpensive.  I like it because it continuously backs up and it’s doesn’t seem to slow down processing at all.

  • We’re actually exploring this space right now.

I think we’re going to do a cloud storage PLUS a local backup. Costs of storage is coming down so much it’s foolish not to create backups of critical information.

  • Backblaze is a service that has be recommended to me by several people. Inexpensive, runs in the background and will backup external drives as well.

  • I’m glad to find this post as recently one of my laptops crashed and I lost all the data. I have used DropBox, Google Drive and Sugar Sync in the past, I will definitely check out the other ones that have been mentioned in this post. Thanks!

  • I have backup space included in my Norton package (I have the feeling I’m the only person left in the world who is still paying for anti-virus – but since ‘all my life’ is lying on this laptop I don’t wanna take a risk).

From time to time I use Dropbox to transfer files. The others I didn’t know, but will check them out. Great list!

  • As Apple says “When you sign up for iCloud, you automatically get 5GB of free storage. And that’s plenty of room, because of the way iCloud stores your content. Your purchased music, movies, apps, books, and TV shows — as well as your Photo Stream — don’t count against your free storage. That 5GB goes a long way for your mail, documents, account information, settings, and other app data.”Then I also replicate off site.
Have a place you go often, buy a spare wireless drive and automate the backup when you are in the area. I set my wife to have hourly backups, one of wich is saved every day, one day is saved every week and one week is saved every month. The monthly backup is never deleted. Multiple PC’s can backup to one  wireless device.
I have a second device in a location that I visit daily, and backup there as well.
None of which will matter when the zombies come.

  • @geoffrey-gordon I use Box and DropBox. Like  @claudiapoeckl my Norton (yep I pay too!) backs up my files. Have to say that I’m still leery of the cloud for security as well as data mining. Does Google use Google Drive to analyze you via your files? Plus I watch enough shows (Revolution, Falling Skies, etc.) that keep me grounded still. I will definitely keep a mix of cloud and ground options for my files!

  • @richardmclaughlin- I already filled out my GDrive and I need to delete some things in my trash… I did find some other that gives you unlimited storage called cloud zow. I like that cost as it is monthly and it does back up everything in the background. If you want to know more, please message me directly as I am not sure I can just place my link here in the forum. Thanks. @kc_kreative @claudiapoeckl @michaelpingree @rich-brooks @dianebianchi @shemric @rebecca-craig. I also have a service that will allow me to store unlimited videos as well.
