FourSquare Resurgence? (9 posts)

  • Lately I have noticed more businesses in my area (Indianapolis) using FourSquare. I was in California for almost three years and say the rise and fall of FourSquare use so I was intrigued to find more appearance in Indiana in recent months. I have used FourSquare for a while competing with friends but have found more places using FourSquare deals and pushing for the FourSquare check-ins over Facebook.

I know the analytics are nice when you have claimed your venue. And I do like the ability to create a Business Page that can be managed and checked in from. I am finding it reaching some of our education sites well.

Has anyone else been finding an increase of the FourSquare presence? Is it just my area or have they launched a new “push” to gain exposure?

For those who have used Foursquare, how did it influence your business and exposure?

  • @alexandrabriggs

While I have a physical office, I’m not really looking for “foot traffic” so I haven’t approached it like that. I’d be interested in hearing what others have to say about that.

I have, however, used it to promote events using the “tips” feature. If I have an upcoming event (which I always do) I might go to the location and leave a tip mentioning the upcoming event.

As friends check in to that place or somewhere nearby they see my tip. Since I’m a little more protective about my 4S account than other social media accounts I’m probably not taking full advantage of this, but I saw a local music shop do it and I thought it was a cool hack.

  • @rich-brooks I am also a fan of the tips feature. I like your idea of posting about the upcoming event. That would be beneficial for our “table sits” at hospitals for one of our programs.
We enjoy having our students check in at our site when they are at class since it blasts to their network of friends and increases the brand recognition of our program and associates with someone they know. We don’t run deals but we have increased the number of students checking in.

  • @alexandrabriggs Foursquare holds tremendous potential but seems only limited by the lack of, or slow rate of adoption by retailers. Late 2011 they pushed the new “Explore” feature which makes it useful when you are driving in a neighborhood you don’t know, looking for a restaurant for example. Tips by people, promotions, categories and so on then pop up, which is really what social, local and mobile is all about, right?

Here in Quebec (Canada), the adoption rate is still somewhat slower than in the US but I have faith retail outlets will see the light. Will Foursquare be the one to reap the rewards? I would think so, as it holds the first-mover advantage and has survived Facebook Places and Gowalla, but time will tell…

  • @fredericgonzalo I like that you pose the question of whether Foursquare will remain to reap rewards and agree that given it has survived (and even seems to thrive) throughout Facebook Places is a good sign! I’ve found the Foursquare app to work better than Facebook Check-in on multiple occasions.

  • @alexandrabriggs Hello Alexandra! I’ve been trying to work with foursquare a bit for our branch locations. However, we don’t have a lot of people even checking in, let along putting us on their to do list. What I would like to see from Foursquare, for business users, is the number of registered and active users (with active being clearly defined) in your geographic area (say 30 mile radius, or even better, adjustable radius). That would be a great tool in helping small businesses determine if it is something that they even want to use.

  • alas, poor foursquare, I knew it well (sorta), I lay it to rest and focus on other platforms and hope to be enticed no more @alexandrabriggs

  • @jasonreilly I agree, that would be an incredible tool to have! I wonder if that is on the developmental horizon for Foursquare

  • @alexandrabriggs If it isn’t, it should be. It would be a great tool to prove worth and value of the tool. Right now I’m doing it because both of my coworkers have FourSquare, and since one is also my manager, then there we are!
