I’ve done a little consulting w/restaurants as far as web marketing and social media goes, though I wouldn’t call myself an expert.
I’ve found for most owners their number one concern is bringing in customers, so social media’s role is about engaging people before they come in.
I’m sure there are some good uses of social media once people are inside–as simple as Foursquare to promote specials on the menu or QR codes to tell stories of how the food was sources.
However, since social media “traditionally” involves a screen, I don’t think you can get rid of that component. After that it’s just socializing…which is nice, too!
