Fears (15 posts)

  • Just curious, what are your fears and concerns as you’re starting to embrace social media for your business? I’d love to hear your thoughts..

  • @valeriejoydeveza

Great question, however it may be one that not too many people admit to having.

In my situation, we have grown our organization about as well as we can without the benefit of social media (or at least that’s what I have been able to convince my partners of).

So, we are now venturing into the realm of social media for expansion.

My fear is that because we have operated for so long on one-to-one expansion, that it may be hard for some of the group to embrace the different way of doing things in the “new world”.

My hope is that after seeing the results, a few opinions will be changed. :-)

  • @valeriejoydeveza  Valerie.  I was one of those who DID NOT want anything to do with social media.  I began with internet marketing and did not want to be a part of anything where people talked about what they had for lunch. The problem was that all of the internet marketing gurus kept saying that those of us who love what they do for business, need to be on social media.  Arrrggghhh.  My sister showed me how to start a profile.

I made a lot of mistakes as I did not know what to do.  Then I started connecting with the Social Media Examiner and Mari Smith.  That was when I began to understand the possibilities in social media.

Even though many would consider me as still being the “new kid” on the block with social media, I have had international success as a result.

@warrenveach  You can do it!   I was able to do this and continue to keep changing how I am connecting and communicating to my followers. They see all the changes I keep doing and do their best to keep up with me and them.  Now it has been over a year and I am proud to say that several of my followers have now become the “Movers and Shakers of the Horse World”  Together we have created a network that spreads all across social media.  What an amazing experience this has been for me to watch.

That is how I know.  If I can do this.  Anybody can!

  • @valeriejoydeveza Just fear of the unknown. There is so much change coming, and it’s happening rapidly.  That’s a great thing and it continues to create new opportunities.

But that also means frustration, especially for people who just get used to one thing and then it changes to another.

What will the next thing be? I have a few ideas, but when I share it’s a bit overwhelming to those not familiar and just trying to keep up. And then, there is the financial cost. Updates to websites, social media pages, new sites, etc.

For those starting, there is a lot of fear and concern just over those issues alone, in addition to having to learn something new.

  • @valeriejoydeveza The concern I have is doing too much and getting off track too easily. So you really need to have benchmarks and checkpoints.

I agree with @donpurdum the rapid pace of change makes it a bit scary; we dont want to commit a publicly foolish mistake.

  • @randithompson

    LOL Randi,

That’s exactly the outcome I’m shootin’ for. Hopefully they’ll see the benefits, or get out of the way.

  • I am just getting started with all of this and I find it a little overwhelming.  There is so much information, so many things to learn and it is too easy to get side-tracked.  I’m just taking it one day and one thing at a time.  Hopefully I won’t look like a complete idiot more that once or twice before I get the hang of this.  A little public stupidity allows people to laugh and relate.  It also helps a lot with humility.

  • My fear is that even though I fully recognize and have embraced the paradigm shift created by the advent of social media and social networks, the folks I speak to are “not there yet”.

Now that I am acting on my own as a consultant, I fear I will be put in the pack with all the other “social media consultants”, which I am not. I am marketing expert, I like to devise strategies and tactics to improve a company’s top and bottom line. Social media just happens to enter the equation, along with offline tactics, sales & distribution challenges, product definition and launch, measurement, etc.

But hey, it’s the sum of all those fears that make me wake up these days with a smile on my face. Heck, these are exciting times, aren’t they? :-)

    Great question, by the way.
    @valeriejoydeveza

  • quite agree with everyone – i have just finally got it that i need to work on social media – a very steep learning curve for me. i find it overwhelming and to keep sane have slowed down a bit on how much time i commit to learning about it. my biggest fear is doing it wrong and it’s out there for posterity. as Valerie just posted, it is also an exciting time so I’ll struggle on in the hope of gaining mastery … one day

  • For me, it falls under- the more I learn the less I know. It’s hard to keep up without falling victim to spending too much time on it. Out in the World Wide Web, seems like some marketers are on all the channels, all the time. Good use of tools I suppose…or maybe they are on all the time?

Just researching the massive amounts of timesaving tools and apps can consume your days!

  • My concern is the time commitment. There are so many opportunities available. I can have a limited number of hours I can spend on social media. But I just keep reminding myself that everything I am researching and learning about now is a time investment in my future, and I do the best I can with what I know today.

I also take a full day off from social media, including email on Sundays.

  • I agree with all those who have expressed concern with both the time hit and the overwhelming nature of it all. I guess my greatest concern is not to miss the mark of getting the most efficient productive use from whichever venue I choose to invest my precious few spare minutes with.

  • great question, Valerie. My greatest fear is that I’ll waste time learning and using the WRONG program or app and then find out I should have used or done something else. Like so many have stated, I have a very large learning curve and limited time and am getting lost in the mass of information available. @valeriejoydeveza

  • @deairby @durkbarton @barbaraabu-zahra @lisagrover  @warrenveach @donpurdum @fawnmorgan @fredericgonzalo

Thanks for replying guys.. took me a while to get back here. Really appreciate your answers. :)

  • I have to agree with all, especially the time and knowledge commitments but personally there are so MANY directions to go and things to learn that I feel almost paralyzed. Im afraid that by the time I get far enough along to realize I have started down the wrong path that it will be too late.
