Explaining Pinterest (20 posts)

  • How do you explain PInterest to a social media luddite? (ok, not really). I find because I just started using it, I am not able to articulate its value easily. Does anyone have a clear, concise way to describe it?

  • “It’s the YouTube for photographers” that’s what i told someone.

  • Read a great article today as a matter of fact with tips, etc for the beginner, intermediate and advanced users….best I’ve rea so far…

  • I think of it in terms of an online bulletin board on which I can visually keep track of things of interest to me and that I believe others may find valuable as well.

(I, like many, tend to be more of a visual person, and an appealing photo can draw me in much faster than someone telling me about or sending me a link to something.)

  • @marketennant Do you have a link to the article?

  • @devanianjali I actually tried that, and got “but why not Facebook or Flickr?” That’s where I stumble

  • Well, @joanmuschampfagnani , then I’d say, “you can play the ‘what if’ game all day long….the point is, you can get on the site now, take a leap of faith and come in before the crowd, or you can give all the excuses in the world” of course, there are nicer ways to say all that, but I guess my point is after a while, they’ll need to decide for them selves whether it’s really worth it or not. :)

  • @devanianjali Perhaps I really do mean “Luddite”! LOL

  • its a way easier way to see pictures than on  facebook…..  you  can  scan  several  categories on  your  boards or a friends  in seconds.

..how about.?…its an easy  way  to see and collect  and     share    interests/pictures  visually ….

  • @hjelliott I think the way you described is best. “an online bulletin board on which I can visually keep track of things of interest” and I would add inspire.
@joanmuschampfagnani I think it would help to know how the individual you’re explaining to could relate. ie how would they use it for their business or their personal interest?

  • @rachelmaskell Good point. In this particular case, the individual “closed” off to ideas too quickly, but I am engaging in better converstation now about it.

  • Hi Mark,

Could you share that article you talked about?  Thanks

  • @jayelang Here is the link that @marketennant referred to http://www.copyblogger.com/pinterest-marketing/

  • thanks for the link, Joan, awesome info. @joanmuschampfagnani

  • So when setting up Pinterest for a business what are the profile picture size ratios, I have seen various sizes, but when I try to apply a larger graphic it get’s cut off the bottom. I’m going to downsize graphic but was wondering if there was a trick to install larger profile pics??

  • I think it’s a fun way to post images especially if your product has a strong visual component, but I’m not.so clear on the use for business besides just posting the link.

  • I think it an excellent way to showcase many businesses, for example restaurants, art galleries, tattoo parlors, anything where you can have images that describe the business itself. If you want to see my Sushi bar client that I’m just starting out with and need much more work on check out pinterest.com/sushi7reno/ Blake

  • Awesome example of how a brand or company can use Pinterest: check out how SXSW has set up a series of boards for people attending their annual showdown, about to take place in Austin, Texas.
