Ebook fun! (17 posts)

  • Have any of you made a profit from writing an ebook? If so I am very curious how long it took for it to truly ramp up. Any thoughts?

  • @mikid15

I think it would really depend on your audience, how big an issue your ebook solves, the size of your email list (to promote the ebook), your advertising budget, track record and cost of the ebook.

In short, there’s a lot of variables!

If you have no list to speak of, or if you’re just starting from scratch, you may think about using an ebook to build your list as a free giveaway to join your list.

If you already have a big list of opt-in subscribers, pushing it out to them will probably be your most effective tool.

    Good luck!

  • I’m just getting serious with this. I’ll let you know how it goes. I have a half dozen titles almost ready to go!

  • how are you planning on getting your ebook done? @judithgotwald

  • @deairby

I’m exploring that now! Suggestions welcome. I think I’m going to Kindle publish because I don’t have the distribution list on my own site (yet) to make it profitable. And I mean that in more than monetary ways.

I want to include illustrations and up until recently that was a shortcoming of ebook publishing.

  • I run a publishing company on the side, and all of our major profit has come from eBooks! :) Just so everyone knows, if you are interesting in doing a full fledged ebook, and having it edited and laid out, and need help with that, my publishing company is considering doing a business line. I’m happy to chat with people. We provide editing, layout and design work, and cover art. We’re not a vanity press, but an actual publisher, with distribution channels and ISBNs. Just email me at jason.reilly@brionaglen.com

I can’t guarantee we’ll take anything on, but if you are looking for that little bit extra for the professional polish, and don’t have all the tools to do it yourself, we can definitely help!

  • I think the secret is in the launch. Try to use all the Social Media plus PR (there’s a PR (PRwire??) service that only cost $25. Try and get some friends and relatives to give good reviews to kick start it. Sign up for Kindle “Select” (during a 90 day period you can only use Amazon to advertise your book – you can’t even use your own website). However, it is worth it because Amazon Select allows you during that 90 day period to  offer your book FREE for a 5 day promotional period. After that you can decide to use select again or not.  After the free period gradually raise your price until you see resistance – Amazon has some good metrics.

Make sure that you let everyone know  (through social media, etc) that your book will be free on certain dates.

Good luck & let us know how you make out!

  • @mikid15 I am also on this journey, I have all the skills foe designing an eBook, but just haven’t got to it yet. Bad I know…

Anyway I wanted to ask have you offered a free eBook before and what was the response?

  • @geoffrey-gordon I have not offered a free ebook yet sadly. I haven’t had a huge amount of time(a five page paper is due tomorrow and I seemingly keep editing the thing quite a bit). So that is what I seem to keep doing with my writing. I will sit down time and time again and I still haven’t done anything with the information.

  • Don’t forget to tag your book (choose your categories carefully – this is very important).

Also, suggest to people that they “like” your book on amazon. Once you get to a certain position with Amazon they start promoting your book.

Make sure you fill out the author page as completely as you can.

  • good to know, Jason… I’ve got a few ebooks in the hopper… @jasonreilly where are you along the journey, Geoffrey? @geoffrey-gordon

  • @deairby That sounds cool. Just send me an email on here, or at my work account. I’m happy to help.

  • This might be the group I am looking for…I am looking for a coach. I want to write an eBook, but i am not really even sure where to start!

  • Yes it depends on where you publish it. Quite frankly if you plan on using Amazon to market you e-Book it’s like throwing a straight pin into a garbage can full of trash and hoping to find it.

You need to take complete control of your e-Book from start to finish including marketing it. However, not to many firms will let you have that kind of autonomy.

For these reasons I publish every e-Book that I write through https://www.payloadz.com/

I have complete control over my e-Books there and make a profit.

  • @klg007 Great tip, Kenneth. I’m not convinced about the Kindle platform; I think many authors throw up free content and cross their fingers, which is making it harder and harder to be seen in the store.

  • An ebook is next on my list.  I’d like to offer a free book and see how it goes.

  • I wrote an ebook some months ago, “Effective Social Media Marketing ” (in spanish) you can have a look here:

    http://www.hisocial.com/hisocial/downloads/widget_show/594/?utm_source=download&utm_medium=hisocial&utm_content=download&utm_campaign=594

I offer it in exchange of a tweet or a like. So far it’s been downloaded 1500 times (with almost no promotion, and 0 pennies spent in advertising), this has increased my SEO and social audience.

By the way, the English version will be available in one week.
