Do you use Skype for business communications? (24 posts)

Topic tags: business calls, skype
  • I’m finding more and more people who I have scheduled calls with will say you can call me at ###-###-#### or you can reach me on Skype.

Do you use Skype for these type of calls, or other calls?

And if someone wants to Skype, do you go video or audio only?

(And if you do video, do you ever wish you had a “morning mask” like Jane Jetson? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0idWiHiasKg ;) )

  • @rich-brooks I actually just downloaded Skype yesterday because a friend of mine who lives far away wants to show me something, but I haven’t used it yet. I’m curious to hear what others have to say about it too. BTW, like the morning mask thing – I could use that!

  • Yes! I love Skype and use it often and mainly for business calls. Most of the time I yes audio only. I’ve been known to tell a client, “yes I can Skype with you. Let’s do only audio..I look like a hound today…” ;) “Morning Mask would be great.

  • @rich-brooks I have a Skype account but never used it. I can only do audio with my old laptop (tho guess I could video with my tablet!). I picked up a Google Voice number too and have it on my business cards / resume.

  • @beckyflansburg @kc_kreative

I always use it for international calls. I was on the phone last week w/Small Rivers (the folks behind paper.li) and it save me about $50 in fees!

  • @rich-brooks I would use it to chat with my brother in Cali if we ever got around to it. International and long-distance are probably its forte.

  • The new version of Skype on my MacBook Air (with brand shiny new OS) sked me if I wanted to connect to all of my different connections. seems like it took everyone I had a phone number for.

  • @rich-brooks yes, I do have Skype always on; I also work remotely for companies and with all in our team having an account we can interact at no cost at all; most of my biz partners are also there and that helps exchanging quick views; with my support team we share the desktop whenever they need to explain something to me that is too hard to get if not visually; well video…. mmmm, I’d rather not to unless asked by close friends

  • @rich-brooks I use SKYPE daily it’s our main means of communication although, I very seldom do video calls they are prone to break causing call failure. For video calls to team members we have been experimenting with G+ hangouts.

  • I use Skype all the time.  I rarely use the video call – just a regular call.  If you initiate it you can opt to “call” or “video call”.  If the other person initiates, often they video call, so I keep a post-it handy to cover the camera.

  • I do use Skype for business calls – audio and video. I don’t need a morning mask, looking great when I step out of bed ;)

  • I use Skype for chats and video sessions with folks overseas.   I purchased ObiHai.  It cost me $43 dollars for the device,  and I make domestic calls free (U.S. & Canada)  and international calls very cheaply – using my home phone.    For my contractors in India,  I may purchase an ObiHai for them – so we can make calls free between each other.

  • I also use Skype – have used it for several years it is a great service. I use both audio and video with my clients depending on their needs. Have just started to use Google Hangouts as well which are great quality too.

  • I use Skype when talking with clients, either video or just audio. Skype also has a screen share feature which can come in handy when trying to show or instruct a client on a particular point.

  • I have been using Skype for several years with clients.  I offer a toll free number as well so the client can choose which they are more comfortable with.  90% of the time Skype works well but there have been dropped calls.   With clients who are familiar with Skype, we expect issues now and then.  It just requires a callback to continue the conversation.  I have never used the video function.  I use a program like Join.me or others when the call will require sharing screens, doing a presentation, training sessions with clients, etc. along with Skype or my toll free number.

  • @rich-brooks Always, Rich.

Living in Australia I find it a useful tool to chat to people from all over the world for free.

  • @rich-brooks Yup, I use Skype more and more often for business purposes, and most of the time with video. It puts a face on the name & voice, breaks the ice and makes for a less formal environment. Having said that, I have had conference calls with more than one screen, worked fine too. Love it!

  • I use Skype as well. I like that if you have a PRO account you can do a multi-person sky with video which is very helpful. Also, you can share your screen which gives it even more flexibility. Skype seems to have higher quality than a Google Hangout too as well. Plus, don’t forget to use the built in IM program as well. Very useful.

  • I use Skype for both private and business calls. I put my Skype name on all my biz material, like letterhead, business cards, website etc. I have no problem using video and I especially find video useful when talking to a (potential) customer located far away, where you can’t travel that regularely. It allows me to have a face-to-face discussion no matter the distance.

  • @rich-brooks Yep me too. I’m a Skyprt!

  • What does everyone recommend for the webcam? last time I had one, it came with my Compaq and it was BAD…you could hardly make out who it was, we played around with it one day (never used it again)! Thinking about getting Skype for family calls. My cousin called at a reunion last year, it was fun (hers wasn’t too bad). I have thought about it for business, but need a lot for info.

  • I do a (mostly) weekly podcast and I use Skype and other tools to record the interviews. I love it. I use to do a bi-weekly mastermind call with Skype and I would love to do it again .

It is one of my best tools, but you need to know the limitations like avoid using it on WiFi, using headphones and alike.

  • I just used Skye for the first time last week and I love it! I think I will use it for business. I have a client who lives an hour and a half away and I had the idea of using Skype to do some of our consultations. It will definitely save me some gas money! :)

  • I use Skype everyday – I subscribe to Sky and have done so for years and save a fortune in landline costs. I would rarely get anywhere near the fair usage limit of 50 calls a day and I also add in extra money for making out of my own country calls which are charged at a very small amount.

As for the video – I would not use that for business purposes unless it was requested or permission based, that’s for us is more of a friends/family advantage, but as someone else said it’s not that reliable and breaks up the calls.
