Do You Think Pinterest Will See a Growing Number of Male Users? (10 posts)

  • I’m seeing a ton of businesses whose target audience is most likely males that are appearing on Pinterest.  What is your take on this?  Do you think the genders will balance out there more?

  • @promotionsocial It’s too early to tell however, I personally feel that Pinterest will be be dominated by women due to the nature of the content.

  • @ptwylie I know that is a barrier, but I think it will grow with men, but they aren’t the early adopters. But, if marketers get createive and shift their own mindsets to gender neutral, the creativity will come faster.

@promotionsocial I agree there are many categories of businesses that the Pinterest visuals would suit. Again we seem to be dismissing something because of stereotyping instead of breaking them down

  • @ @promotionsocial probably  not in my  field..which is  .home, decorating, angels, pretty  gardens, greenoak furniture, store displays.words and   junk art…….i have about  400 followers in my   pinterest  boards.., i think  3  men….

i judge by my dh…and he  still rolls his eyes..alltho hes  very tekkie and keeps all our  computers up to date and  is a heavy  internet user….hes  kind of a jock and  can  talk  online    about  fantasy golf or   tractors  but  not pretty pictures…..we are in our  60s

hes interested in  golf, the Reds , music and  politics…i dont think   his  peers in  those  fields   would  find  the home  on pinterest  that  me and  my   customers  have  found….i hear about it  every day in the store…its just   going  wild in my  field…dh  respects it  because he hears our  customers talking and  laughing  about it… …but its not  going to h  be  for him, so  far…

  • At first I thought what has gender got to do with PInterest; The discussions have provided some answers.

I guess, a gender neutral use of PInterest would be to aggregate ideas and thoughts.

  • As a social media site, the content is driven by the users.  So, yeah, with the predominant demographic being women ages 25-55 right now, the content looks particularly feminine.  For it to change, it’s going to take some brave souls willing to jump into that trend and pin what they like. But, Pinterest is whatever the people are pinning-so that could change.

Ann, I don’t know that any of the guys on my personal profile have pinned anything at all.  I definitely found it intriguing that so many sports teams and reporters were taking a place in Pinterest.  Maybe the Reds are there!  LOL

Joan, I agree that many are dismissing the tool based on stereotypes of the content being shared now.  It will be interesting to see if those stereotypes begin to be dismissed as the site gains credibility in the business world… this month has certainly been crammed full of that.  I personally, hope to see more men adopt it and more balance in pinned content.

  • Maybe we could get all the women on Pinterest and all the guys on Google+ and introduce them to each other!

  • Sounds like an eighth grade dance in the making!  haha

  • @promotionsocial I think there will be a more balanced mix.  I’ve been looking at it because some clients asked about it and it seems like a really useful tool, as some other topics have discussed at length.  As they begin to understand its potential utility I think people of both genders will put it to work meeting their own specific needs.  One article indicated that in the UK 56 percent of Pinterest users are men.  And yes, they do focus on different content – mostly financial info.  I’m looking forward to getting rolling with Pinterest.  It looks like it’ll help us quite a bit.
