Did Pinterest Just Slay Instagram? (7 posts)

  • We brought up our Pinterest page pretty quickly over the summer but for the past 2 – 3 months traffic has slowed and fresh pins in our vertical are becoming rare. Typically I’ve been getting 6 – 12 email notifications daily of Pinterest notices. Like Twitter I re-follow and or like everyone who touches any of our boards.

Fast forward to yesterday – 120/30/40?? Pinterest email notifications. Another 20 over night. While driving down a long dark country road last night it hit me. Instagram like Facebook doesn’t allow pinning. Instagrams subscribers are leaving in droves (the unintended consequence of 20 year olds in hoodies tossing around a billion in cash and using poor judgement in creating new TOS) and they’re migrating to sites like http://web.stagram.com/n/hipstagram/ that ENCOURAGE pinning.

2 questions – Is anyone else experiencing this? and aside from going through our Pinboards for proper & additional optimization is there more I (we) can do to leverage this phenomenon?

  • Hi @mitch-rezman

I don’t use instagram so have nothing to base an OH!pinion on.  However, what you say makes sense. At this juncture, sites that are supposed to be “sharing” photos and don’t do that, after all, are going to fall by the wayside very quickly.

People want seamless integration as noted by the exodus on FB by many major brands last year.

If Instagram wants a place in the sandbox, they better learn to ‘play nice’ quickly because once that exodus begins they will be hard pressed to stop the downhill momentum once it’s rolling well.

As far as leveraging, you probably know more about Pinterest than I do, so I might look to follow your lead.

  • imho…pinterest is  still very   hot in my world….my visual, eye candy world…

it hasnt changed  for me…..  i like it a lot…and   still hear about it  from  my  custmoers  regularly.

..i rarely   look at the informational  pins….to me they arent a very good  fit…..im  there  for the  beautiful stuff…or  the  artistic…whether for my garden of  for my store… or fun dorky stuff  or   inspiration….

  • @mitch-rezman I, too, have noticed a lot more activity on my Pinterest account. I think the best way to leverage it is as with any other form of social media – share great content and optimize the text in the descriptions and comments. Also make sure you “watermark” your original images!

There definitely may be some temporary burst to Pinterest b/c of Instagram’s stumble, but I doubt it’s long term.

If I were you I might look to see what YOU did different to encourage that activity. If you can’t, I might reach out to some of your new followers and ask them.

Years ago I saw a huge spike in email subscribers to my newsletter, so I asked them why. Turns out they were all subscribers to the same writing ezine and the author of that had talked up our ezine w/o me knowing it.

    Mystery solved!

  • @Rich Brooks - this is definitely instagram fallout – we’ve actually slowed down our Pins of late because Pinterest was flaming out for us. I’ts unlikely this is due to an ezine or blog post – here’s why. Our vertical is birds – in October we Pinned a bird related manicure & got 3 repins last week I pinned another bird related manicure pic and now have more than 100 repins of that and looking at the Pin subscribers there’s no pin boards relating to birds in any of their profiles, just fashion, food & babies
I’ve seen “micro” virility over the 11 years we’ve been on line but it took us 6 months to get 700 followers and 7 days to get 100 more – there’s something going on as an example

National Geographic, the magazine famous for its top-notch snaps, said on Tuesday that it was suspending all posts to the Facebook-owned service beyond the current 714 uploads.” – that’s 650,000 subscribers right there – read more: http://goo.gl/uQQbN

  • As of today 12/27/12 our Pinterest activity is up ten fold daily from 2 weeks ago
