Database Management or CRM- What do you use? (4 posts)

  • Did you know that some CRM or Datbase management systems are not what they say they they are. What I mean is that I have used failthfully a database that will remain nameless. I have used them for years and really like the what was done, the upgrades and the like. This year I decided not to renew my upgrade, and then that is when it all went horribly wrong.

You see I have a lot of people in my database over the last 6 or 7 years that I have networked. I have gone to many events and been involved in many networking clubs or refferal groups.

Many of the people I have worked with in the past are on this database and I was very happy that over the years I kept up with most of them , by writing down my notes of each time we met or had a phone conversation.
I attempted to export all my database into a spreadsheet so I can prepare for a new system that some of my friends in business are launching that has unlimited contacts, and much more.
I was horrified when this particular company told me- sorry but you can’t download your notes for your contacts.
What? This is my database not yours, how can you hold my notes ransom. Not only that I wonder what they do with the notes, why would they do this? What is the reason? Are they taking information from my notes and using it for their purposes. I hope not. I also paid a pretty penny to have this sophisticated database, so I was not too happy after my conversation with this company.
I then tested out a few others and I found that the note section was less then desired as you can only put so much into the notes.
I just can’t wait until I can put all of this to bed, because working with a spreadsheet is really becoming a pain.
What database management do you use?

  • @prestonodenbrett
My experience w/most CRMs is that the notes export poorly or not at all. There doesn’t seem to be a standard for import/export.
We use Highrise by 37 Signals. It’s all we need.
I looked at Infusionsoft (is that what you’re not referring to?) but decided we couldn’t justify the cost and learning curve.

    Good luck!

  • @prestonodenbrett We’ve used everything under the sun. ACT, Goldmine, SugarCRM, VTiger, AddressTwo, and now X2CRM. I like X2 best so far. The interface is the smoothest by far. No matter what, the interface with email is challenging at best with all of these systems.

  • Hello.

I build my own databases for this purpose and some for clients also. Depending on an outside source is not a viable option when sensitive personal information is involved.

It’s actually pretty easy to find a programmer to do this – it’s the interface that many don’t do well.  But if you do know a good DB programmer, it can be cheaper to go that way, in the long run.

Once again, depending on outside sources does not always work well.
