Custom QR Codes (7 posts)

  • I am interested in finding sites/companies where you can do a customized QR Code.  My purpose is to easily differentiate between 2 codes on the same page.

Any help or insight would be appreciated.

  • I’ve used this one for a few QR codes.  It’s free and pretty simple. http://qrcode.kaywa.com/

There is also one other that is more advanced in terms of tracking - http://tagomobile.com.  That one is pretty nice as well.

  • We have a company in our area that has been working on dynamic QR codes that is pretty neat.  Right now it is in beta and you can play with it for free.  Am sure when it comes out of beta there will be some type of charge but they haven’t announced a time yet or any pricing.

I have found it helpful because if I stick a QR code on a print brochure that may have a shelf life of several months or even a year then I can go in and change the site the scanner goes to from my computer.  So the same printed QR code scanned today may take the person to our website, tomorrow to our Facebook page, the next day sets up an email, etc.  I am not involved in the company, a small start-up but was introduced to it at a mobile marketing seminar I attended.  Called TrakQR if anyone is interested.  I am pretty much a novice here so would be interested in some of you power users thoughts on it.

  • We set up QR codes that track and are created with each landing page. So if you want to have QR codes to do different things you can.. You own the code, it is not beta and it is not going to expire or change to something you don’t know. It has happened already with other FREE QR codes. It also can keep track of unlimited campaigns. So if you advertise in ads- create a QR code for each ad- then see how many people scan. The most scans usually means that your ad is being read from that ad you paid for. Just make sure if you create a QR code- please don’t send it to a regular website but to a mobile optimized site or you will give your user, customer a bad experience. Too many people do this to use them, but people are using their cell phones so you need to make sure it is going to mobile site.

  • It sounds like @susfry was asking for QR codes that look different, not just that go to custom links. I haven’t used any custom designs yet, but this Mashable post gives some great ideas, and they reference who created them. It might be a starting point. The examples also inspire ideas of simple things you could do yourself, like putting a different color box or background around each QR code.

  • The biggest mistake I see with people using QR codes is businessesre directing people to a website that is not mobile optimized (or setup to be viewed on a mobile device)
A QR code is made to be scanned with a mobile device and since all screens on devices aren’t the same size if you just send them to a regular website that isn’t built/optimized for mobile they may not be able to see what you want them to look at.
Our local newspaper recently did this, but a QR code on a balloon (bad idea, balloons move to much) and it directed them to the papers website – which looked like poo on my friends smart phone – everything was sooooo tiny she couldn’t even see it and they expected her to zoom, which at that point she was to frustrated so she just exited.
Just something to think about ;-)  Eden R

  • Susan – as a creative that’s a great concept – in a recent blog post of mine (http://bit.ly/wGQDRb) I talk at length about QR codes – Kerem Erkan is a great place to start – I hope that helps.
