Contests on social media (9 posts)

  • Hello people, today I’m looking for suggestions about contests on social media. Will you help a young and little-experienced fellow? :)

    More details:

    1) As for now, the best social media for our business seems to be twitter, so we’re going to focus mainly on that;

    2) I’d like to use this concept:
“the one who generates more retweets will win”

My main concern is: is there a tool that allows me to easily monitor who generates more RTs? That sounds hard, because it’s easy to know how many retweets my initial message gets… but how can I know who generated more retweets?!

If there isn’t such a tool, I can do the same on facebook instead, but on twitter we already have a decent number of followers.

Thanks in advance, all of you! :)

  • @demorden
Something a little easier to track might be to ask a question, and see who has the best answer…? just a suggestion :)

  • I should have mentioned that I’d like people to retweet a post of mine.

That way there would be a double effect:

    1) people would basically spread the message I want

    2) If the whole thing will be correctly planned, such a rule could generate a retweet-fever.

I could plan a contest in another way, but this is what I would like to do. At least, until someone explains me that it’s a bad idea, and why. :D
(or tells me it’s impossible of course)

EDIT:For your information, I can give away a prize worth a couple of thousands $, so it should be interesting. ;)

  • @demorden

How would you measure if someone RTs someone else’s RT of your post? Do both get credit or just the first one?

What if the post is RT’d again?

Do all RTs count, or just the ones where you show up in the little box in the corner when you RT someone?

    Do MTs (modified tweets) count?

I think there are a lot of possible hurdles to this particular approach.

I do believe there are programs out there that will collect all the RTs (at least from people who haven’t protected their tweets) but I don’t know what they are.

  • Hello @rich-brooks,thanks for your interest. :)
Before planning the details I’d need to know exactly what is technically possible… BTW I was thinkng of something like this:
    I post a tweet, let’s assume it’s something like
“Max is awesome, RT this and the more you are RTed the more chances you get to spend a day with him and his awesomeness [link to the rules]“
Every retweeter gets credits only for their “first-level” retweeters.Ok I’m losing into my own words… :D an example is better!

    • I post the above tweet.
    • user “A” retweets at 10:00
    • user “B” retweets at 11:00 because he sees the tweet thanks to “A” – A gets credit
    • user “C” retweets at 12:00 because he sees the tweet thanks to “B” – B gets credit, not so A
And so on… but the more I think about it, the more it seems difficult… It starts looking like a nice dream! :D
Maybe you -or someone else- have a suggestion to run it in a different way.
    My goal is:
    • to get as many RTs as possible, ideally not MTs;
    • to push the users to RT more than once so that more of their followers see the message
    • to spread also the message that our product is cool, and possibly
    • to use the winner as a testimonial

Thanks to anyone who will answer! :)

    EDIT:

Eureka! Maybe I’ve got the solution! I could pose the tweet like this:

“Max is awesome, RT this and get a chance to spend a day with him and his awesomeness. One chance for every RT. [link to the rules]”

And the winner will be chosen randomly. Between all the RT, I’ll pick one.If duplicate RT count, people will be likely to RT at least a couple of time, since the prize would be much better that a day with me… (I know it sounds impossible but that’s true, lol)

Please share your thoughts, any idea is welcome! ^_^

  • As always with requests to RT, keep the original short so it doesn’t have to be edited to RT it.

  • @demorden As long as they RT your original message you should be able to view RTs via @ and mentions on your Twitter account. You could always tell them that they need to  have “RT via @ (your Twitter name)”. Remember to make the original message 100 characters to ensure they can add their own message. I would also check Twitters’ rules on contest and sweepstakes. I know that Facebook only allows these types of promotions through 3rd party apps. Good Luck on your endeavors!# http://j.mp/An3mzq

  • First of all thank you @violamyers and @debbielynnava for having participated.

    I’ll check the link.
Viola, please, could you explain why allowing people to add their own message is important? I can see the good possibilities of course, but I would like to have some kind of control on the message. I know that this is basically a bad approach (or at least I think so) but… I can’t help but desiring that. :P

  • The link is my signature :) !People generally RT things that allow them to add their own message. Inevitable what will happen is that they will reconstruct your original message. When creating campaigns be sure to keep it social. Another option is to create a hash tag story unique to you. I have two #Socialyttips and #SocialytSaturdayNighttexts if you click this hashtag (in Twitter) you will find previous tweets annotated with this hashtag.  I hope that this is helpful.# http://j.mp/An3mzq
