Content Marketing: What’s your favorite method? (19 posts)

  • Most of us have bought into the value of content marketing as that’s essential to social media marketing. However, I wonder what you’ve found to be the best form of content marketing. Do you prefer blogging, podcasting or video? Why?

  • Phil, I am new to the business, my method is to provide content on my site, I would say that is a blogging exercise. Podcasting and video are not in my plans at this time. I have no familiarity with either and I would like to build a significant number of pages as an initial goal, perhaps look at other means in future. I will be glad to see other opinions. daveM

  • @phil-mershon  I have recently started a blog that I have found to be effective.  I use my blog posts on my Facebook page as well (along with posting other content of interest).  I also post my blog on relevant groups on LinkedIn.

  • Kim….. is there a penalty for duplicating your copy on those sites…. or  do you modify the copy before you post…. I am completely dumb regarding those sites.  Thanks

  • @dave-mackay  There is definitely no problem in posting your blogs on your own Facebook page (I have one for my business Access Profiles, Inc.).  For the groups on LinkedIn, I do attach my blog through a link to my blog page, but tend to alter my Topic sentences to fit the group.

I also have a local “online” paper that posts my blog articles (North Hills Patch).  The administrator of that page told me to “cut and paste” my original blog article and submit it that way.

I guess then my answer to your question would be that (at least in my circumstances) there is no problem in duplicating.  The copy is my original work.

Hope others will weigh in with this if there are instances where it is not acceptable.

  • I have read so much about the Panda-Penguin terror crew that I am reluctant to use similar copy, that’s why I commented on that.. and yes,  it will be great if some experienced people would clarify what is appropriate re posting to the social media pages., Thanks for reply  daveM

  • @dave-mackay@kimkline is correct that posting your blog content on your social sites is appropriate, but I would clarify something. I would only post a link and/or a picture of the blog post (depending on where you’re posting). Social media is a great platform for promoting your blog content, but you always want to get people back to your blog. Your content is the gift you’re giving to get people to follow you and ultimately trust you with their email and confidence in the quality products/service you provide.

I do think it’s also important to tailor your intro sentence to the site. PIctures are quite important to your content also.

  • @phil-mershon you are definitely right…and I should have been more clear! I only post a pic or link to my blog article along with the short tailored description. The goal is to definitely get traffic back to my blog or site. Thanks!

  • People keep mentioning pics, so far I have not used any…. Certainly I will have to research this… If I put my own pic in there… people will be frightened. haha

  • @dave-mackay  I don’t use a pic of myself (except on my profile!  haha).  The pics I use are usually “free stock pics” (clip art) that illustrate my subject or sometimes pics I have taken myself that go with the subject matter.

  • I certainly have to learn to use some pics….., at least one per page. I am about to add a couple pages using screen shots. I have to spend time to learn what the visitors like to have on a page, they seem to tolerate a bit of advertising, but I notice that on this page…. not much except for site features…. There must be some very subtle ways of marketing that I have not recognized so far.

  • @dave-mackay  Took a little look at your page and, in my “not extremely knowledgeable” opinion, pics would help.  You may also want to “highlight” some of your posts.  This draws attention to some posts you really want people to see and breaks up your page a little with posts of different widths and sizes.  This really helps your page to be a little more “easy” and interesting visually.

I am sure there are some better experts on this forum that could help you more!

  • yes, I quite agree with you, my pages lack any sort of design and are boring although there is some good content on some pages…. Yesterday I had 650 pageviews and 115 uniques, if I had not scared them off with boring pages I may have had better numbers. On Sep 4 I had one visitor so I am getting somewhere but this is a very unprofessional presentation….. lol

  • For my business, I’m working on a blog currently.

For one of my customers we are considering videos, since she wants to get more people to participate in her workshops and seminars. I think if people see an intriguing video excerpt of a workshop or seminar it could lead to more sign-ups than just written words. We will see what the results are.

  • I saw a blog this morning…… it is to solicit people to attend a conference or seminar that a couple presents every few weeks. The whole site is just one page, and prominent on that page is a video of the couple talking about their seminar.. That may confirm your idea of a video for attracting people.

  • @dave-mackay you should sign up for a review of your blog by Kristi Hines (see the sticky topics for this offer). It will be a while before she gets to you.

If you need more immediate help, I’m sure some of those who chime in there might be helpful.

Kim is right that stock photographs can be helpful. Also getting some good graphics designed would help. People expect good visuals anymore and it will help people see you as committed and relevant.

  • Good advice Phil!  Signing up for a review of your site will help (I signed up myself).  And, like you said, in the meantime others who post there might be helpful!

  • Great Idea, Phil, I read her blog every day…. she has some excellent ideas. I actually posted her blog intro and url on my site earlier today so that my visitors can access her work. Thanks for the suggestion.!!

  • @phil-mershon

    Great thread, Phil!

My default channel is my blog–most often at our company blog–but we also have a YouTube channel, and I find that great for my more visual type posts.

However, I always “double down” by embedding that video in a blog and then blogging “around” the video topic.

I’m planning on a new venture, and for that I’ll be using podcasting as well!
