Content Development (5 posts)

  • I’m curious about how small business owners approach content development. I have several clients who are really great about helping me develop content, and that content in turn has resulted in a decent amount of traffic for them. Then I have other clients who just can’t get it together.

But I feel like a lot of small businesses must have difficulty developing their own content. So here are a few questions.

    1.  What industry are you in?
    2. Do you develop your own content?
    3. How often do you put out fresh content?
    4. What problems do you run into when developing content?
    5. What type of content do you find gets the best feedback/results? Please be specific: what kind of medium, what purpose does the content serve, etc.
    6. What unique and successful ways have you found to promote your content?
And please share any tips/advice for others who are in need of help!

  • I’ll take a stab at these:

    What industry are you in?

    Writing, content marketing

Do you develop your own content?

    Yes

How often do you put out fresh content?

NOT often enough in 2011 let me tell you. For 2012 that is shifting. I’ve set the intention to write a minimum of 1 hour per day for my own business and it’s already making a difference!

What problems do you run into when developing content?

Lack of consistency in writing it. Note I did NOT say a lack of time. Big difference there.

What type of content do you find gets the best feedback/results? Please be specific: what kind of medium, what purpose does the content serve, etc.

The white paper on my website has helped me tremendously to build an email list. However during the last part of 2011 I was inconsistent with promoting it so it’s kind of stalled. Plus it needs to be refreshed and updated as my business focus has become clearer and narrower since I first wrote it.

I’ve had great results generating interest in my work on my FB personal profile through the posting of a good mix of questions, photos, links of both business and personal stuff. I love developing connections online and then taking things offline when it reaches another level.

What unique and successful ways have you found to promote your content?

I love Facebook for this! And joint venturing with other business owners who have similar audiences.

Excited to see what others add to this discussion.

    Cheers,

    Stef

  • @stefaniefrank Thanks for responding. I’m definitely in the same boat as you, with the lack of consistency. I rarely leave time for promoting myself, since I spend so much time focusing on my clients.

I think it’s smart that you use your personal Facebook connections to drum up business – because after all, your friends and family are your best salesmen :) If I could hire my mom I would!

Going to check out your white paper now. Best of luck in 2012.

  • @amoresocial great questions! My input:

    1. What industry are you in? Writing, editing, and publishing

    2. Do you develop your own content? Yes, for myself and for clients who need ghostwriting and editing

    3. How often do you put out fresh content? Every business day and as often as a client desires

    4. What problems do you run into when developing content? Plagiarism—just because you find an article or a photo online does not mean you can republish it in your name (not even if you reword it using a bunch of synonyms)! For honest people, posting consistently is often the greatest challenge because creating fresh, original content takes time and we all lead busy lives.

    5. What type of content do you find gets the best feedback/results? Please be specific: what kind of medium, what purpose does the content serve, etc. Content that is created with one ideal viewer and his/her most pressing problem in mind always does well. You need to know your primary audience to determine if they prefer audio, video, or text. If you’re not sure, offer a transcript along with your audio or video or create content aimed at different demographics.

    6. What unique and successful ways have you found to promote your content? Referrals from satisfied customers really boost my ghostwriting business because I don’t advertise the fact that I am writing for [client’s name here].

Final tips: it’s easier to keep up the pace and create a lot of valuable content if you 1-record your best ideas when they come to you and then flesh them out later 2-pick one theme 3-create a variety of content centered on that one theme all in one sitting, which you schedule (and keep) as you would any important appointment.

  • @debbielynnava It sounds like you have it all figured out! The tips you included at the end are very helpful.

As someone who writes content for clients in other industries, how do you handle the knowledge gap? For example, if you were writing on a topic you didn’t understand or weren’t an expert on.
