Confused about email marketing (6 posts)

  • Hi,Help! I am very confused as to the different software available for email marketing – I presume that mailchimp and aweber do pretty much the same thing? But then what is optimizepress? would I need to use that as well? I have been playing around with mailchimp – and seems pretty straightforward, but I am not sure what its capabilities are. If anyone can answer any of these questions, and make things a little clearer, would be much appreciated!

  • Hey, Jenny….

    Here’s a quick breakdown for you!  ;-)

=> MailChimp is pretty full featured newsletter and list management tool that I use it myself.  I also recommend it to my clients not only because of all the needed features — but is has a user-frienldy interface and system that holds your hand as you learn about all the features and tools available for your use.

=> AWeber has more of a learning curve, is more robust with better tracking tools but an excellent choice for the more experienced marketer. For most of my client’s MailChimp’s tracking info suffices.

=> OptimizePress is one of several WordPress themes that create landing and squeeze pages that will have the call to actions for folks to sign-up for your newsletter.  So OP works in concert with your newsletter service of choice.  For these applications I prefer Premise by StudioPress and can vouch for their support too!

The key to using any of the above is going through the tutorials and taking the time to learn so that you understand all the features available and can use them to your advantage.

    Does that help?  ;-)

  • Great explanation @istudio.
I’ve used both MailChimp and AWeber and had to move away from MailChimp after reading their terms of service.
“No offense intended, but because we must ensure the highest delivery rates possible for all our customers, we do not allow businesses that offer these types of services, products, or content:”
In that list is Affiliate marketers. So if you do any affiliate marketing at all I would give that some thought.

  • thanks very much for all the info – it has definitely made things a lot clearer! I suppose it would be ok to start off on mailchimp, and then use aweber once I had more experience. I will definitely check out studio press.

  • @jenny-frances For paid, Constant Contact is the biggie in the space. I’m not sure of all their services; however, they seem extensive. Local reps always have free seminars on email and other topics for small businesses. In the association space, there is Real Magnet (very basic) and Informz (looks nice). I use Real Magnet’s MagnetMail and it’s pretty basic (no subtitles, no major social media integration); however their customer service is spot on anytime I have an issue/question.

@istudio Thanks for the run down!

  • @jenny-frances

Mailchimp, Aweber and Constant Contact are all reputable companies.

Mailchimp is free for under 2K subscribers, I believe.

Aweber is the choice of most internet marketers b/c of their robust toolset.

Constant Contact is a favorite for small biz and non-profits, and IMHO has the best customer service of any of these services. They have real people you can talk to easily, and actually will call you when you sign up to see if you have any questions.

    I’m a big fan.
