certified domain or uncertified? why or why not? (10 posts)

Topic tags: certification, domain
  • I am trying to move my blog and website to self-hosting and buy some new domain names. I am asked if I want to pay for the new domain names to be certified. Two of the three are for business. Do they need to be certified?

  • From what I understand, it’s an extra expense that you don’t need. If you want to be secure, then get an SSL certificate – but a certified domain (again, from what I understand) is a fancy attempt at making you spend more money. (I’ve only seen one company do this so far.)

  • And, Miss Dea, don’t worry about paying extra for hiding your identity either. It’s too easy to find out in other ways, so don’t waste your moula trying to hide it. Just my two cents….

  • my gut said “don’t spend the extra” and looks like it’s as smart as you two! @atlantarobin @melissaagnes

  • @deairby @melissaagnes @atlantarobin  agree, totally agree! I mean SSL certificate might only be truly useful if you run banking business! Otherwise, you can spend the saved money on marketing rather than trying to convince yourself that your site is secured.SSL are no doubt better but that’s where banking/financial transactions take place in a great number.

  • I will only have a few items for sale (i.e. my cookbook and a few ingredients) Don’t think that will take a bank. Besides, I can link it to another site (Wepay). @moinshaikh

  • @deairby I think your instincts are right on. I didn’t pay for the add ons, either.

  • @deairby you only need the SSL if you are running the code to process credit cards or gather other sensitive information on your own site. If you are sending them off to process their card through some one else’s advice, the you do not need it. A lot of people have the catalog and cart on their site and process checkout through another provider.

  • thanks, Abigail @abigailgorton
