Can using LinkedIn cause a conflict of interest?? (6 posts)

  • Hello,For a while now I have been thinking about creating a professional LinkedIn profile for myself. My question is, can it create a conflict of interest? Let me explain: I want to create a LinkedIn profile for myself but it won’t be related to the work I do in my company. I have another job for a construction company project managing. I want to put pictures of the jobs before and after, basically creating a professional online profile of the jobs iv managed. Considering im 24 and have managed and coordinated construction projects from thousands all the way to million dollar projects, I feel I have the right to create a professional online profile but if my construction company I work for finds it, I don’t want any problems or trouble. I really don’t know if I am allowed to post before and after pictures or use those jobs on my LinkedIn profile. Can anyone please give me insight on this matter? Anything can help :)Thank You All!

I feel you need to have this discussion with your employer. I would couch it that it’s also beneficial to them, because it will highlight the quality of their work and promote their services.

If you’re doing something that you’re afraid you’re going to get caught for…well, then it’s probably not OK.

There is certainly no rule about posting your experience to LinkedIn, that’s (some of) the purpose of the site.

I actually see this as an opportunity for you, to help bring your construction company into the 21st century and cement your position in the company as an employee who “get it.”

    Good luck!

  • I agree with @rich-brooks regarding having a discussion with the emloyer and construction company. Are both of these aware of the work that you  do with the other?  You might suggest to the construction company the value of them having a company Linked in page as well as a FB company page. And that you would manage both and have another construction company employee as admin.  I agree with the suggestion also  of including this work experience on you  LI profile.

  • @rich-brooks @trudy Thank you both so much. I’m going to ask them almost like a pit pch that this could be beneficial to the company and would make them look good! I never thought of that! Thanks a lot for the help! :)

  • Glad to assist in getting your creative juices bubbling.  Let  us know how it turns out. Happy New Year!

  • @sgsrecording – I know you want to do a profile for the construction work you have done.  Reading your initial post, I wasn’t sure if the other company was construction as well.

I agree that you can talk to the existing employer.  A LinkedIn profile is your online resume, so you should be able to list anything that relates to you.  The only time I would caution against it is if your current employer does not know that you do this other work.  Then it could work against you.

You can definitely list more than one current job on LinkedIn.  So you could list both positions.  Also, be sure to utilize an app such as Slideshare.  You can then create an online portfolio of your work that would autoplay within LinkedIn.  (If you’re curious about how it works, view my LinkedIn profile and you can look at my Slideshare app.  You can access it from my profile here in the club.)

Let us know how the discussions with your employer work out.
