business training…self-made or certified? (11 posts)

Topic tags: business training
  • What type training did you receive before going into business? Did you work your way up through the ranks, take over a family business, graduate from a business school with an MBA or step out with an entrepreneurial spirit, or something else?  Have you used the same method with Social Media?

  • no training, i was an english major in college….so it  was  on the spot learning….on  both  the  business and  social media….while paying  attention   to the  market……mainly i looked at who was actually    MAKING MONEY  in my  field…

and  always kept in mind that   you have to have a good idea that the market wants and  will pay for……

social media   took a lot  more  tekk  help  from  within the  family….but the ideas to use it  just  seemed  sensible…

  • and this method certainly worked well for you, you go girl!!! keep up the good work…pacesetter! @annfurnivall

  • thanks  dea…. i   always  worry  more about my idea in relation to my  market    than  my  marketing…..

i did learn a lot from a  failed  business we had… …. it  really hurt!!   and made  me  so aware of  the power of the market, i really  respect that…

  • Self-made, hard knocks, hours and hours on the computer with the hunger to learn and the dream to be successful! :)

  • Studied programming in 1968.  Became a programming manager, then system’s analyst.  Worked many years as independent programmer/analyst.  Then worked 10 years for 2 of the global accounting/consultant firms as project manager implementing multi-million dollar systems.  Then owned a bookstore.  Now Marketing Manager and website developer for tractor dealership. No college, great training at the global accounting/consultant firms, and lots and lots of self taught skills.

  • I have 25 years of corporate experience as an Executive Assistant, a Bachelor degree and a Certification in the field. Unfortunately, they didn’t prepare me for running a business. So while I am very experienced at what I do, I had to spend hundreds of hours conducting internet research, reading books and talking with successful business owners to learn how to be an entrepreneur. The rest is from the experiences I have received being a “CEO”.

I absolutely love being an entrepreneur; however, I would recommend choosing this path only if you have the tenacity to stick it out through the startup phase.

  • Started in business as a teenager with no formal training, and have been self-employed since (35+ yrs).  Considering going back to school when I fully retire.

I’m learning social media like I’ve learned everything else, by reading and doing.

  • @mgoes sounds  great…its  so worth it  to  be on  your own…imho.

  • @deairby

Like @annfurnivall I was also an English major in college! No interest in business whatsoever.

However, I was a very fast typist, so I ran a typing service for beer money. So apparently I did have some interest in business.

This was back in the day when most people wrote their rough draft by hand, but professors required type-written pages for final drafts.

I would get a lot of work from business majors, where I learned a bit by retyping their papers.

So, no: no MBA, no business courses, nothing.

To make up for it I just try and read and listen to everything I can get my hands on.

  • @rich-brooks Great story! I too was an English major and went on to study business when I did my Masters degree.
