Beware of Jing (11 posts)

  • I just want to warn everyone — This free software wreaked havoc on my computer. I still haven’t figured out how to get repair the damage it’s done (and I’ve got a brand new laptop). I googled and discovered others complaining about it too. Beware of Jing!

  • @ericaetelson Thanks for the warning! I have this but haven’t used it yet. It’s leaving now. I also have a brand new laptop.

  • @ericaetelson

Thanks for the heads up. I was going to try it until now.

  • Thanks for the warning…can you recommend another program?

  • I use the free Jing version all the time and have never had a problem.

  • @ericaetelson, I have to agree with @rlmosca, I’ve used jing for over a year now and haven’t had any problems either.

When you say it “wreaked havoc” on your computer, to what exactly are you referring?

  • I’ve been using it for a couple of months and haven’t had any problems either.

  • @warrenveach @rlmosca @juleswebb I’m glad you haven’t had problems.  It behaves like spyware on my computer and, when I googled, I discovered that many people actually consider it spyware, whether this is TechSmith’s intent or not I have no idea, but on some systems it seems to do the kind of damage spyware tends to do — slow things down and make certain feature inoperable. There’s even a program out there specifically for uninstalling Jing and then repairing the damage it’s done. In short, my computer was jinged!

  • Hi @ericaetelson

I’m sorry to see the problems you experienced.

I use Jing myself, and like others here I have not experienced any problems with it.

It has been a valuable tool for me. I have also Camtasia from Techsmith, and also very satisfied with this product (this is a paid version).

I use Norton to check for any spyware on my computer.

Hope you are able to resolve your issues.

    Cheers..

I use FireFox and i have found a screenshot plug-in on their site called, “Awesome Screenshot”.

I have started using it and am really liking the results. It allows you to make comments, insert graphics and choices in what format to save your shot.

It seems to be a good alternative to jing, although it doesn’t make videos.

  • I’ve been using Jing for years and have had no difficulty. Also using Camtasia for longer videos, etc. Good to know there could be a problem with it, but neither Norton nor my other spyware programs have detected an issue. Hmmm.
