best web presence for a writer??????? (11 posts)

  • My sister is a published/award winning author without any web presence and wants to join the ranks. What would be the best way to get cyber? Goal of that presence is to have a “go to site” for editors/publishers with bio and sample work. Not interested in blogging like the newspaper column she used to do…Thanks for your input!(This site rocks on the info!)Dea:) :) ;)

  • You might want to check out Stella Cameron’s website.  http://www.stellacameron.com/Also she has an author page on http://www.facebook.com/StellaCameron

She’s a very popular romance and suspense author

  • @deairby I recently helped an author of 6 mystery romances get online. I recommend that your sister needs to explore the websites of many, many authors and from them, figure out what features will work best for her and her level of online commitment. Not being willing to blog is a huge drawback for any site, especially an author, and it hurts SEO.
But hey, I understand that people are busy, and the writing juice it takes to write a blog can take away from the juice needed to get the next book out. It’s about finding a balance.

  • @deairby – Not sure if this is what your sister is looking for, but I’ve recently partnered up with a Virtual Book Marketing Specialist and we are offering packages which include virtual book blog tours, WordPress websites, social media packages and more. You or your sister can get more information at http://www.bookmarketingservices.org.

If this isn’t what she’s looking for, no worries.

  • thanks everyone…I’ll pass this info on.. @clusterwebdesign @charlene-kingston @trudyd1474

  • Goodreads is a good place but for the author’s personal site (and every author should have one SEPARATE from the publishers site) look for a designer/developer to work with her on a personal level.

Lumping yourself in with other authors or “canned” sites does not always get the results you might truly desire.

  • cool, E, thanks, will send that suggestion @supereb

  • i hope she owns her own name dot com, or at least the dot info. I’ve often wondered why people like your sis don’t set up a .info site – that is what the TLD is for, right?

  • I agree with Mac @richardmclaughlin – the .info is better as the .com is for “commercial.”

Of course, the argument is that authors are listing their wares (books) so a .com is appropriate anyhowsen. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

There really would be no problem having both. Registering all the main extensions is best at any rate, as you would not want someone trading on your name for a fan (or otherwise) website that did not include the proper vernacular or intent. Even if you paid $15 for each registration, you’d only be out about $60.00 per year.

Then again with all the new extensions available, I don’t know if that advice is warranted.  But still, couldn’t hurt.

  • Great questions and valuable feedback from all… Thank you.
