Basic Keyword Question (11 posts)

  • Hi All,

I am looking up keywords and need to claritfy this (if anyone can help that would be great).

    For example:

If my global keyword is 30,000,000 searches per month and the competition is low. (Using Google keyword tool).

Is that a good combination?   what I should be aiming for?

I want to put together a free ebook to give to people who subscribe, and i am looking for good topics.

    Thanks

    Chrissy

  • Chrissy, what you are talking about is called a Key Word Efficiency index. (KEI). A simple formula of number of searches (search volume) squared divided by the total number of competition for those key words. There are more advanced variations on this but this can be a great tool for identifying potential keywords. It needs to be viewed with a dose of common sense.

  • Of course it’s good, but instead of using the competiton data from the Adwords toolbar, just type your keyword in google and look at  the number of results.

As karl said, use this formula to compare keywords

    (popularity²)/Competition

  • So glad you asked this question, Chriss. I know that you are supposed to check keywords but I didn’t know how to interpret the information! @celebrityglamour Not real sure how to find the competition number??? Help. @albertmora @karlmorris

  • Well,  I just did a Google search and my ‘beauty’ phrase came in with over 100,000,000 results.  The first 2 being from Wikipedia.  So I’m a bit lost at the moment!

I will have to get a SEO tool as I really dont know whats best.   Im still learning how to build site, write articles, get SM accounts set up (and learn how to adminster them as well), and (learn how to) write an e book, so I can set up my subscribing/opt in tool for my site (which of course) I have to learn how to do!

  • Chrissy, consider calling google and speak with one of their adwords reps, they can usually get  you pointed in the right direction.

The opt in or subscribe form is not very difficult, let me know and I will try and help. Personally I would go ahead and set up a Mail Chimp account.

  • @celebrityglamour When it comes to keywords the “key” is to find a phrase which describes who you are that people will type into the google search engine bar. The best research is done by asking people who’ve found you on the Internet what they typed into the google bar to find you. You’ll be surprised by what they say. Ask your current customers what they would look for with Google to find you.Go out to your closet competitors website and look at what their keyword are and incorporate those words into your site. One of the keys is to keyword for who you are, not necessarily what you do … Think plumber, not plumbing. People who need their drain unclogged look for a plumber, people that want to do it themselves look for plumbing. Also use the phrase that the masses use like doctor vs physician or lawyer vs attorney. Lawyers call themselves attorneys, but laypeople call them lawyers.I use the phrase WordPress virtual assistant instead of help with WordPress. My research has shown that more people search for who I am when they are serious about purchasing my services.

  • Maybe I misunderstoodyou  Are you looking a keword for SEO `purposes or for Adwords purposes?

If it is for SEO purposes …use the formula I mentioned before

If it is for Adword purpose forget about what I said, and use the following, for a given keyword there are 4 types of concordances:

     keyword (very broad)
     +keyword (broad)
    “keyword” (phrase match)
    [keyword] (exact match)

Try the 4 types in your Adwords campaign, and analyse which delivers a lower cost per conversion (using Adwords tracking code)

    I hope this helps

  • awesome advice, Amy @amyhallbiz

  • @celebrityglamour

Here’s a way to get a better sense of your actual “competition” for a phrase. After you’ve searched for that phrase, let’s say it’s “celebrity beauty tips”, search for this:

    intitle:celebrity beauty tips

Include quotes if you did the first time. That tells you which sites are using the phrase in their title tag, meaning their intentionally or accidentally targeting that phrase.

It will give you a better sense of your “true” competition.

  • Thanks to all for your input.   At this point I am just doing SEO and taking it one step at a time.

I would be much further ahead then I am, if I already knew how to build a site!
