are you a speaker? what’s your topic? (37 posts)

  • Are you a speaker? What is your topic (especially if it is NOT social media)? There are so many experts in social media in this club, as evidenced by answers and advice given, who are speaking on the subject. You can sign in, too. But I’m just wondering if there are any other subjects? If so, please speak up!

  • I speak on Customer Service and Team Building as well as Creative Way to Use Social Media.

My passion to speak about is “What’s in Your Backpack?”….Getting rid of your baggage to veto on with your life.

    And You @Deairby?

  • I speak on Small Business Strategies which covers all aspects of the business i.e. marketing, strategic planning, business planning.  Social Media is only one area.

  • I really like the word picture of the backpack! As for me, I am honing my base message that is couched in my informational talk about tea. My message is motivational/self-help: be your own unique self. I recently published a cookbook which developed out of the tea room cafe I owned for 7 years. A new book I’m working on (when I can get away from this addicting club) is A Flavor-Infused Life. @charlynshelton-socialmediainterpreter

  • small business strategies! well, you are very welcome here! share, teach, give us your wisdom! How long have you been speaking? Are you learning from this online club? @dongrandy

  • I’ve been speaking an teaching for many years.  Social media is new for me from a business perspective, so this club has been very helpful bringing me up to speed, but as you said, the focus is social media.  More on strategies later.

  • I do programs on the One Page Business Plan which can be used for startups every effectively.  You say Business Plan to an aspiring entrepreneur  and their eyes glaze over.  Same  with an established business encouraged to do Strategic Planning or a Marketing Plan.  One Page Bus. Plan works well for all three.  I teach workshops and use it one on one in my coaching.

  • oh, where were you in 2003? @trudy

  • @deairby. Establishing and working my non-profit, Central Alabama Women’s Business Center. I retired from there in 01/06, but continue my passion of helping small business succeed and grow.

  • Trudy, so glad you can do what you love! @trudy (I lived in Marengo Co., Ala 1980-1983)

  • @deairby, What a coincidence.  I have done some work in that region. As you know it is called the Black Belt in reference to the soil, not the population.

  • I speak mostly on online strategies for small business, but Facebook strategy for small business tends to be my most recurring topic.

Just wondering for you other speakers — are you also coaches? teachers? I’m always curious about what those who brave the stage do with the rest of their days.

  • Valissa, to make sure people know you are responding to them in here, click on their name to the top right of their block. That will put their name in this space and they will be notified that you mentioned them. @valissa Asks: “Just wondering for you other speakers — are you also coaches? teachers? • @deairby Well, I have spoken on a few occasions but would certainly like to increase the opportunities, as it’s something I like to do. Topics of choice: travel (as in, the tourism & travel industry), marketing & social media in travel.

One of my goals in 2012, is to speak between 5-10 times in front of audience of more than 50 people, so gotta get goin’ ;-)

  • With your language skills and all, you would be quite interesting to listen to. What is your strategy for getting those speaking engagements? @fredericgonzalo

  • @deairby Truth is, I ain’t got a strategy :-(

Up until December, I had always been company-employed, so I was never actively seeking out speaking opportunities. Whenever they would arise, I would gladly accept them, but that’s about it.

For 2012, I intend to work on writing more often on my blog, work on a book project and I figure all this ties in with increased opportunities to speak. But to be frank, I don’t know of any strategy to get speaking gigs when you are not a published author or a reknowned author in a given field. Any tips you can spare on the subject?

Look forward to reading what others may have to share on the subject too…

  • definitely positioning yourself as the “go to person” is key, now how to do that? publishing a book, yes, writing on your blog, yes,…I am right here with you. I am trying to launch a speaking career, too. (Well, part-time at least.) When I first got started I just mentioned to someone of my target audience that I was available. That worked. I think it is a networking/multiplying effect. Hopefully we’ll find out through others’ posts. @fredericgonzalo

  • Another speaker checking in!   Thanks @deairby   I have done a bit of public speaking and like being on the stage.  For years, my focus was in the horse world. The topics ranged from teaching, training, business and marketing.  Then I came to a cross roads in my life where I needed (for health reasons) to focus more on what I can do online and social media.  I never expected what happened next. Some of my clients work for big corperations and they started hiring me to speak about social media and internet marketing at their conferences.

The biggest shift in what I do on the stage came when I attented a “Speak to Sell” event.  By the second day tears were falling out of my eyes as I realized I finally had the perfect sales formula for adding sales to my signature speeches.

  • @deairby @charlynshelton-socialmediainterpreter @dongrandy @trudy @valissa @fredericgonzalo

I own The Internet Conference and we host speakers and I personally speak on the future the web and how it how businesses need to be preparing for the coming changes.

  • @donpurdum Well, well, following up on the sound advice from @deairby … I am letting you know I am available! :-)

Topics of choice: travel (as in, the tourism & travel industry), marketing & social media in travel. I am also looking into mobile and how it will affect tourism suppliers and the industry, as I strongly believe this will be the next big shift for marketers in the tourism field.

If you have any needs in these areas, let me know. Thx

  • I have a few topics I speak on, depending on the audience. My two favorites are

Promoting user adoption of technology and Delivering Effective Presentations.

After working for years for tech firms, and being surrounded by developers and highly technical people, I really understood how important it is for an organization to ensure the USERS of the technology have a sustainable way to adopt a solution. Most very technical people find is so easy to jump in and figure it out, they do not “get” why users don’t bother.

And, for my second fave topic, I sat through so many “read my bullet” power points, I wanted to scream! Be memorable and heard!!

  • Thanks @deairby — my previous comment was meant more as a general remark for the entire thread, not any specific user, but the feedback is still appreciated.

Sounds like we have a really interesting group here!!

  • I speak on social media as well as conduct workshops and corporate training on social media strategy, networks and tools. I try to split my speaking engagements 50/50 between non-profit and for-profit organizations.Favorite topics include “Do I really need Twitter?”, “Social Media Efficiency” and “Google” for Business”.

  • I’d love to hear what you have to say about sm efficiency1@jfouts

  • Thanks Dea, Here’s an example of what I talk about in a post on my site, Social media Coach. Basically it’s a lot about discipline. ( :@deairby

  •  discipline? I was afraid of that! :) @jfouts

  • So, I went to your post about discipline….great info! Now the executing the info! @jfouts

  • I speak on perfume. In particular natural perfume and developing our sense of smell.

  • awesome aromatic subject! how have you developed your speaking, how often do you have gigs? @boxcarmarketing

  • I speak on creativity and spititual inspiration. I love the Lord and thank Him for the artistic and creative skills He blessed me with.

  • @deairby I speak on quite a few topics most of them to do with helping people ride the brand building motorcycle confidently.

My talks avoid lectures and theory. I use “learn-by-doing” engagement games that get the audience to participate, and in the process learn. (How did you learn to ride a bicycle? Did lectures and theory help? Or did you “learn-by-doing”?)

I have 45 to 60 minute “learn-by-doing” Conference Games in which I usually introduce the topics I coach on:

    1. Launching a brand
    2. Relaunching a brand
    3. Making non-profits strong brands
    4. Self-Financing Promotions (These are promotions that have their own stream of revenue)
    5. Word of Mouth Marketing (Yeah, not just Social Media! But I handle Word-of-Mouse as well. Otherwise I probably would not be in this group.)
    6. Relationship Marketing (Yes, Social Media kicks in again. But I combine Offline with Online.)
    7. Idea Management. (How to generate ideas and make them work.)
    8. Presentation Skills (How to speak well and get speaking assignments!)
    9. Negotiation Skills (How to make sure all sides win.)
    10. Creating 21st Century Brands (Consumer co-created brands. But this one uses Social Media a lot.)
I also have longer “learn-by-earning” workshops on each of the above subjects where I coach people till they learn how to earn from those particular skills. They pay the full fees only once they have actually mastered that particular motorcycle and have started earning from it.

The live workshops are supported by online coaching.

Some of these skills can be taught entirely online.

Glad to be part of this group of Social Media practitioners.

  • Durk, wonderful to hear about your speaking. How long have you been sharing and how did you get started? @durkbarton Where are you????? Everything you teach is something I could use! I love the kinesthetic approach, too. Great work, thanks for sharing. @sumitroy

  • Oh, Dea it’s my great pleasure to talk to kids, workers and a lot of grown folk from many walks of life. Some of it is on stage and some on the street. As both a Christian Minister and freelance Artist talking to people is absolutely essential. I’ve given reports as a social activist and talked to people who wanted to understand the evolution of our increasingly technological society. I live and work in Detroit, Mi. Where I am beginning to become known as a creative and public minded person.

  • Looks like Detroit is blessed!  How have you been able to use the internet to help advance your opportunities? @durkbarton

  • @deairby Oddly enough when I took a speech class in college I barely got to the point where I only had one knee knocking ;-) . I managed to finally overcome my fear of speaking in front of groups and have been doing it for over 25 years, mostly in the area of sales and marketing. Although I have also taught at my former church in front of classes as large as 200 people.

My focus most recently has been speaking on marketing strategy development. I am a Duct Tape Marketing Consultant and our programs are predicated on getting your strategy right before engaging in tactics such as social media, advertising, public relations, referrals, etc. In addition to speaking in front of groups I have also done a number of webinars on various marketing topics.
Anyone interested in knowing a little more about some of the talks and webinars I have done you can check out my page on speaking on my website – http://ILGResults.com/speaking

I would be happy to exchange information with anyone and learn more about what works for them. I hope to never, ever stop learning; and, I can tell from this group that I can continue learning from all of you.

  • <a href="mailto:+@deairby“>@deairby The internet has been an invaluable resource to me, Dea. I have been able to do extensive research in innumerable subjects online. There is nothing that can compare to the ability to conveniantly reach out to various, varifiyable sources of facts and figures. I have gotten staggering inspiration and information from online encyclopedias and websites just like SME members, @phil_lauterjung, yourself, Dea and the others. There is nothing that comes to my mind that can compare to the wealth of resources and impetus that the internet offers. Like anything, this great resource is sometimes abused. However, I feel the enormous power for growth and good that it offers outways the caveats. Thank God for the internet.

  • @phil_lauterjung Phil I would be glad to engage in a knowledge exchange situation with you. I will check out your website and see if there is a place I can plug into your structure. If you would like to see what I do, some of it check out this site, http://newpercept.blip.tv
