Are you a Social Media Expert, Guru. Intermediate, or Novice? (63 posts)

  • Kind of a “get acquainted” topic to see who all is active here on SME clubs.

  • I don’t know if I’m an Expert or Guru (definitely not a novice) but I hope I’m someone who other people trust the opinion of and value. If I’ve reached that territory of helpfulness, that’s plenty good for me.

  • Jason,I see you specialize in churches and non=profits so I will not mention knowing your cousin Bud Wiser.I am a novice, but I am also a sponge so don’t dispense any wisdom you don’t want repackaged and dispensed as Jim’s Gems. :-) Seize the day and make it extraordinary!!

  • @jasonwiser I always like to say “Advanced Beginner” or “Student.” I’m a student of life and an advanced beginner with social media (2-3 yrs) and horseback riding (20+ years).

  • @jasonwiser I guess I consider myself intermediate.  I have some experience, but definitely not an expert.

  • not sure…ive  been managing our stores  facebook    for   about  2  yrs and have  2400  fans….  so i guess ive  got a lot of ideas on  growing a page.and making money on  a  page……  also  have a blog and  website…no training   tho…

  • Hey @jimpalmer  it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out. :) I still don’t know which one I am. But one thing I do know, I haven’t met an expert yet that refers to himself as an expert.

  • “I am well versed in the language of social media, but I would never consider myself an expert. There are history experts or math experts but no social media experts. Math and history are math and history, but social media is ALWAYS changing”. Let Facebook be used as a very relevant example right now.

  • I guess I would consider myself to be an intermediate. I have had training, but social media is always changing and I make sure to keep up with it.

  • I consider myself a motivated beginner. Plan to be up to speed very soon. I am becoming a student of FB and social media strategies.

  • I consider myself as a student.  I’m still  learning on social media, but I know somethings allready.  Sometimes I can teach other people about social media and then I’m verry proud ;)

I would like to learn more about it, it’s so fascinating to me.

The only problem I have at the moment is time.  I would like to have more time to spend on reading things and learning new stuff.  But with running a B&B it’s not allways that simple to find the time.  What I try to do is focus on the things I really want to know and use them for my buisiness.

  • @lievetubbax i think  facebook would  be  great  for a  b&b….. and its alot  easier  than  building a website!!!  good luck.

  • @annfurnivall  Thanks for your feedback Ann.  I have a facebookpage for my B&B.  It works fine, I try to make at least one update a day and regular posts some photos on it.  I find it verry usefull for our buisiness.

The website is for the people who wants more information on prices, reservation,…

Further more I also try to write in my blog, but that is something that I sometimes have to little time for.

I’m also on twitter and pinterest.

And then there are the bookingwebsites we use for the B&B, I also need them up to date ;)

So, that’s why I have not so much time for the rest.  But I like everything I do online !

  • @jasonwiser Hey Jason, you never did classify yourself. Which would you call yourself? By the way, great paraphrase of Scripture, but destruction of brain cells can never be a good thing.
Recently, I have heard it said if you read five books on any subject that you will know more than 95% of the public, and that you will become a “subject matter” expert. Mark Twain defined an expert as ‘an ordinary fellow from another town.’
I consider most people who are reliable sources as more expert than myself.
Seize the day and make it extraordinary!!

  • @jimpalmer Well according to SME, I am an Ace. :)

  • No expert or guru here. Am I a social person? Well, yes, to a certain extent. Mostly, I use social media online, like the clubs here, to meet people.  :D

  • Depends who I’m talking to in the Social Butterfly circles–ha ha.

Likely an Intermediate +.  Certainly not an expert in the true sense of the word, but trying every day to become much better.

  • How about Professional?  I’m with the ones who have said that experts don’t call themselves experts, just like the truly wise don’t consider themselves wise because they realize just how much they have to learn!  So, there you have it… I’m creating a new category called, Social Media Professional.  ;)

  • @promotionsocial I like it. Great answer!

  • Guessing we’re defined more by who we’re hanging with – to the novice I might be an expert; to the expert Iikely a novice, and when it’s just me I’d say just plain old insatiable learner. But, sure I’ve learned as much from “novices” as I have from “experts” — every unique perspective brings more food to the table… Anyone stuffed yet?

  • @Shari Stauch

Nicely stated. Everyone has a level, whether we want to admit it or not! Heh.

    :D

  • @promotionsocial I too use the term Social Media Professional and have learned there are two categories of professionals in our industry. Those who hold a social media title in a company, and those who manage other businesses social media working for themselves.

I agree with all others in regards to being an expert. Being an expert implies mastering your field and I don’t believe it’s possible to master social media or anything online for that matter. Technology changes so fast and we’re always learning. I like to say I’m proficient with social media.

  • Guru

  • Since we have so many new members, i want to resurrect this thread and hopefully hear what some of our new clubbers have to say.

  • @jasonwiser, trying to resurrect this, I’m still in the Novice (apprentice) step. I’m passionate about Marketing, and SM is a new tendency that works together with Marketing. So, I think I will be in this step for long time. And I hope, that  one day, I can get a degree or specialization in Social Media Marketing, as Dana says, to be a Social Media Professional  @promotionsocial

How many years has been SM working as it is working now?, when I stopped teaching on College classes, back in 2004, SM was not on the Marketing books, not yet!, so I guess, a lot or gurus are coming soon!

Jason, when you said that the real guru’s never call themself gurus, it’s almost always true. I just remember all the hours that I spent in front of Mr. Kottler’s classes, he was always interested in learn more from us, for sure, we learned more from his person than from his leassons, “what a great teacher, what a great person, what a great guru”.

  • Jason, glad you brought this back up to the top. The answers are quite insightful and worth re-reading. To a first grader, even a fourth grader looks smart!  One of the values of these threads is learning from every student, K4-doctorate! @jasonwiser

  • @sharistauch post, which is pasted below, articulated my feelings exactly and succinctly.

“Guessing we’re defined more by who we’re hanging with – to the novice I might be an expert; to the expert Iikely a novice, and when it’s just me I’d say just plain old insatiable learner. But, sure I’ve learned as much from “novices” as I have from “experts” — every unique perspective brings more food to the table… Anyone stuffed yet?”

  • @deairby I guess I’m a fourth grader then :)   To my friends that barely know anything beyond the basics of FB, I’m a guru and amaze them with my insights.

In my marketing job though, I feel like the kid in the back of the class that’s been looking out the window daydreaming, and just got called on…I know enough to muddle through an answer, but is really the right answer??

There is so much to learn, and so much changing so quickly, that I will probably always be in elementary to middle school :)

  • Novie, newbie trying to know this new world. Facing problems, spending my time and energy to find opportunities, but need to have some leads. :)

  • Dude.

  • Dude.

  • Hello All,

I am a professional internet marketing strategist, relationship marketing specialist  and a life long learner/student-especially in this ever changing industry. Certainly I have a deep level of knowledge – I have trained and work with some of the best -  but a day does not go by without several new app, platform, plugin, program and community offers filling my in box. I could be an expert if the internet would just stop for a month or two. hehehe  That is the benefit of a community like this – helps you keep up. I look forward to the interaction.

  • I call myself a specialist since an expert implies I know everything there is to know, and I don’t.

  • I think I would be an intermediate.  Not a novice but certainly not a guru!

  • Excellent!!  @sharijstauch  @mgoes

  • I used to own a company selling digital products on ebay. Then one day PHP, Google Adwords, Affiliate marketing, SEO, blogging, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Iphone and mobile apps, etc. etc. etc.

Honestly, I can’t say i’m an expert on any Internet these days. Technology is changing the world at the speed of sound. Thus I have to keep learning new things and find out what works now and in the future – and determine where I should put my time and energy into.

  • I prefer to call myself a professional or specialist but really, despite the fact my knowledge base is way beyond the novice and probably most intermediates, I still have large gaps that need filling in from time to time. Having learned the ropes on my own businesses, I’ve just started working with other businesses on their marketing, with a focus on content marketing. It is lots of fun. I agree that there are no experts in this field.

  • I’d say that I am intermediate :)

  • 100% Novice. This is my first business page to ever have any kind of say over. I honestly don’t have that much say over it either. lol

I’m here to get help. Plain as day.

  • Definitely a beginner, I manage a couple of accounts and am looking to expand my reach locally as an advisor to small businesses. Any help will be appreciated and most likey used immediately.

  • Wow! Great question. I struggle with that all the time. I feel like I have so much to learn and that most people know what I know. However the local college pays me to teach social media so I don’t think I’m a novice. I hate the term GURU. Actually I think there’s an acronym for that. I do have knowledge that I can share.

  • Ugh, people aren’t over the self-proclaimed “guru” tag yet? Why stop there? Can I be a Social Media Rabbi? A Facebook Pope?

  • @robpeck A Facebook Pope! Are you serious. Your killin me here. This is hilarious! The best laugh all day. I Love it! i think i will write a post about this (with your permission) Thanks Rob. BAhahaha!

  • @jasonwiser

Please, have at it. Send me a link.

I work in India for most of the year — if you find the guru tag silly you can only imagine what the folks here think of it, where there are actual gurus.

    Best,

  • @robpeck @jasonwiser, Rob, I also LIKE IT, lol.

And the coincidence that this morning I was reading a job post asking for Social Media Marketing NINJA, probably this one can be more Marketable, specially between the new generations, who is still on the teen or twenties. :)

  • @hildaalanisgonzalez no Ninja happening here. ha ha

  • Hmm. that’s a tough one.. I’ve been around Facebook a while so definitely not a novice.

  • Huge high five to Shari for her answer, which is so true – it’s always a matter of perspective. Though I have to admit I’m a novice still, from any perspective, but I’m learning more each day. @jasonwiser @sharistauch

  • I believe I am an Intermediate, perhaps, in terms of understanding and applying the concepts. Very much the novice when it comes to the mechanics and the technology. And, as so many have made clear, it takes determination and constant diligence to stay abreast of Social Media. Today’s Expert can quickly become a “dinosaur” and a practicioner having to play “catch-up”.

  • I would say novice. Although I have been doing an immense amount of research, study, and implementing I feel that once I have seen some real big ROI then I will be able to move myself up the intermediate ladder as that has shown what I have learned in terms of understanding and applying concepts has been a successful way of proving my knowledge of social media!

  • I’m a blackhatted expert. I wuz here before you even got your first ‘puter. Know what a gopher is? No, of course not. How ’bout Webrings? ICQ? Mirc? Chatrooms?

Wow. That came out really aggressive and confrontational. Oh, well. Sometimes ya just gotta drill some teeth.

Seriously, tho. I ain’t claiming ta know everything. I’m here to improve my company’s sales. Through social media. SME seems pretty cool but has a few cavities. Would you like a shot before we begin? This might hurt a little.  Ha.

I’ve already picked up several good tips that have already begun paying dividends in traffic interaction and in one case was reminded of a FB trick I discovered myself back in 2008…already working as well.

  • I dont think anyone is an expert or guru, unless its your designation where u work. when you think you have entirely figure out social media, something new comes along which pulls you down to an intermediate (at least for short period of time till you figure that one out).

My knowledge level is always varying, for certain aspects of social media i am an intermediate and when something new comes along i am a novice till i figured it out.

  • I class myself as someone that knows a bit more about social media than the average Joe/Jane and a lot less than most people in this forum :-)

  • A Novice SME . Want to learn from the experts here. Hope to get help from all.

  • is barely scratching the surface a category? cause i’ll own that title…

  • No guru, but definitely not a beginner. But I always believe we should always be open to learning new things and approaching things like a beginner. You see things differently that way. :) Besides, what we know now will be irrelevant tomorrow. So in a sense, we are ALL novices.

  • I’m confident stating I’m a social media professional since clients pay me for what my company does for them. The other terms are relative. How about “social media competent”?

  • Well as my friend and sometimes sales coach Dave Fellman said just this week. If the definition of an expert is that, when there are 2 people in the room talking about a particular subject matter, and you know more than they do, then you are the expert….in that room.Sometimes I is, sometimes I isn’t – depends who I’m talking to at the moment.but true dat, If I’m being paid for what I do, then Professional is the right term. if I’m not being paid then, as my wife is want to tell me, I gave too much away for free “’cause you like to hear yourself talk”…Oh well!

  • @jasonwiser First of all “Great thread” :)  I would say rather than pinning a title on it im someone who loves social media and takes that passion with me when communicating to others to help them with their social presence online. With the Social Media industry ever changing i don’t think anyone out there can say they know everything about any particular topic as new techniques and updates are always presenting themselves. i.e Facebook timeline, promoted posts, Facebook pages manager, new admin access the list goes on :)

  • Looking forward to exploring this group and picking up some great tips. I teach Social Media at a university.

  • Depends on the platform. I would consider myself advanced Intermediate on LinkedIn, a novice on Facebook, Twitter and Google+. Like everyone else, always learning, fortunately the process is fun:)
