Any military veterans? Active duty? Reserves? (13 posts)

  • Any military veterans? Currently active duty or reserves? Veterans administration worker? Introduce yourself here. Include which branch. please. International veterans, vets welcome, too.

  • I’m an Air Force veteran and began my writing, journalism and R/TV career there in Public Affairs where I frst learned how to mass produce articles for hometown news services, a little skill I now find handy when writing volume original seo articles.

Went on to get my BA in Communications with concentrations in Corporate Video, Instructional Media, and Adult Education. During my career, I’ve been the Marketing Director for several video production companies and several barter companies, held contracts with ProEdit, American Honda, Scientific Games, a major PR firm, many nonprofits, direct mail companies, and small businesses, and taught English in Miami, the state of Georgia, and the Republic of Georgia, producing various national and community guides, publications, videos and various hometown news services of my own along the way. Also, field produced several episodes of Success Stories and Out of Town on Business for the Learning Channel and the Travel Channel.

Then I took a MamaBreak for my kids and now am delighted to be back in the business, especially now that we no longer have to be millionaires and major corporations to afford to produce quality videos to market businesses and ourselves. I simply love what the internet has done to create a level playing field for all!

I live in a northern metro Atlanta exurb on Lake Lanier and would love to network with vets in the area and way beyond, whether on social media, internet marketing, video or writing issues or regarding veterans needs and concerns. I’m especially interested in issues involving homeless vets, women veterans, 30-year failed policies on rape of active duty servicemen/women, substandard privacy policies involving VA medical records, and supporting local vet job programs and Stand Downs.

  • I am not military myself, but son is a SPC at Fort Drum.  I have a community support page for the military families at Fort Benning.

  • I am not a veteran but my husband is, Navy from 1977-1981. I am now a mom of 2 Airmen. My son is a Senior Airman who just marked his 3rd anniversary of BMT graduation last week and a daughter who will leave for BMT on January 1.

My other daughter just started paperwork with the Navy recruiter for Officer Candidate.

@atlantarobin Thank you for your service!
@kim-olive thank you for your son’s service, I have also added your page to my page http://www.facebook.com/militaryhandbag.com.lori

We take your military uniforms and transform them into meaningful bags and accessories.

  • I did serve in the Army, back in 1988 when i graduated from HS. I went to Reserves. I am not sure that qualifies me as a veteran as I served for 6 years part-time.. not full time duty. I also did not see any war, as I was just the person that processed soldiers for deployment. I guess more of an office worker with 2 MOS- don’t ask me how that happened, I don’t even know.  @atlantarobin

  • @prestonodenbrett, yes that does qualify you. You served honorably, Active Duty or Reserves does not matter. Thank you for your service.

My husband also will not refer to himself as a veteran because he served during peace time. I argue with him all the time that he is in fact a veteran. As a member of Blue Star Mothers, I thank you all for your service.

  • I served in the New Hampshire Air National Guard, honorably discharged after an extended hospital stay :( Not sure what that makes me, but I was very sad about it. Still, it gave me the drive to stay up 18 hours to work, and build my side business, study marketing/social media, and be the best that I can be! I honestly think more people should sign up, the drive and discipline it gives you makes it easier to achieve your dreams.

  • U.S. Navy Vet! Mid to late 90′s. After I got out of active duty I too joined the N.H. National Guard…not Air Guard…Army :)

  • @lorithueme thanks I do appreciate it. I never did get the fact that I was a veteran cause I looked into before as I lost my other job, and when I asked for assistance to look for another job, they indicated that I was not qualified? I guess you need x amount of hours or days in full time military and part-time does not add up to much even in 6 years.

  • I am a US Navy Vet (8 yrs active), Mother of and active duty son (still in bootcamp), and wife to an active duty US Naval Officer. I joined after a failed attempt at college served 8 years and the returned to college to get my degree in Communications thanks to the GI Bill.  My time spent in the USN was the best years of my life. I made the best friends (that I still keep in touch with) and that is where I grew up so to speak. I would not have become the person that I am today without having served.

  • Thank you @nicole-allen for your service and that of your family. Good luck to your son! I know what it is like going through boot camp as a mom, one down and one to go :)

  • Hello and thank you for everyones service. I was in the USMC 87-91 as a ch46 helicopter mechanic. I served in the first gulf war in fact I was one of the first to arrive and the one of the last to leave. I was there about 1 week after the invasion in August and did not leave unitl almost June. Ended up extending my active dutyby 1 month as I did not get out until july when my ets was suppose to June. Not a big deal but I was starting college in August and wondered if I would ever make it back in time. My service was a fantastic time though and great learning experiance i would never trade. I also servered in the Il. Army national guard before the USMC and also after. Yes, i went through both Army and Marine boot camps. Since the Army was first and I was younger it seemed more mental, but the Marine boot camp was more physically demanding.

  • USMC 08/82-12/89. I got to see a lot and spent ~5 of those years overseas. Missed Panama by 6 days because I got I had an early-out to return to university. 30% disabled after a stupid accident.Once a Marine, always a Marine.
