any ebook authors? how do you market? (11 posts)

  • I think I heard that Amazon sold more ebooks this past year than real books. Whether or not it is, ebooks ARE growing in popularity. Have you published one? What is your subject? How did you market it?

  • The PDF version of my self-published Keeping the Wolves at Bay – Media Training, which I sell directly from my online bookstore, outsells hard copies ordered from the same location by 4-1.

The Kindle version of the same book, sold on Amazon via Createspace, also outsells hard copies, but not by as big a margin.  Not sure why.

    I market that publication through:

    • My twice-monthly newsletter
    • My two blogs
    • My primary business website
    • Speaking gigs
    • Media interviews — even if the interview isn’t about the book, if they’re just looking for my opinion as a crisis management pro, journalists like to give author credit(s) for their sources
    • Direct contact with my clients

  • awesome information, say I have a crisis! How to get an ebook published and marketed!!!! LOL :) @bernsteincrisis

  • do you recommend Createspace over other options to get published on Amazon? And, how much does it cost to be on Amazon? @bernsteincrisis

  • My wife, who is my creative director and designed my self-published book (and has done the same for one other author to date), very carefully researched multiple publishing options before settling on Createspace. Createspace not only publishes, but also turnkeys placement on Amazon.  It can, like other publishers, direct ship any size order to your contacts/customers.

And…it cost nothing to be on Amazon other than giving Amazon 45% of the sales price of your book.  Then they automatically deposit your cut to the bank account of your choice.

  • I am the author of the eBook: Just in Time Help for SMB’s to Thrive in a Digital Age  and while I had given little marketing forethought to the project, I am now…

    1. Following some of Michael Stelzner’s method’s for his book, Launch
    2. Offering it to all new subscribers to my weekly newsletter, The DigiLeader
    3. Promoting it on my blog
    4. Promoting it within my newsletter
    5. Pitching to a publisher of 4 Social Media eMagazines for their new subscribers (fingers crossed)
    6. Offering it when I make sales calls (to prospects)
    7. Promoting it at speaking events and workshops
    8. Promoting it on my personal website
    9. Researching sponsoring the Google project with it
*Would be cool to have it’s QR code and image on my business card (but afraid there’s no room to fit the title right now).

On the fence about converting for the Kindle and Nook but I now will look into Createspace option if I move forward..so,thanks, Jonathan Bernstein.

  • I’ve completed a book, Heretic: The Life And Death Of Akhenaten, and it went live on Amazon Kindle over a month ago.  Still struggling to figure out how to get my sales up.  My computer guy (aka: my brother) is supposed to be helping me put together my webpage and blog, but he’s been busy with paying clients.  Hopefully not too much longer of a wait before we get those up and running.

To those of you who have blogs, how often do you post in them?  How are they working out for you?  Do you feel as if you get enough traffic from them and have they helped your sales significantly (as opposed to other forms of marketing)?

    Thanks!

  • Brijit, how many followers do you have? Have you built a platform with facebook or twitter? How is the website coming? Do you have a plan for what content you are putting on your blog? @brijitreed

  • Hi, Dea–First of all, thank you for the friend request. As to your questions, I don’t have very many followers yet on my Twitter page– only about 400 or so. Not sure what I’m doing wrong. I’ve followed far more than I’m getting back. Which if it were just me, wouldn’t matter, but when you’re trying to market and promote a project, isn’t so good. Not sure what you mean by “platform”. Sorry– I’m pretty new to the social marketing scene for business. I’ve had FB for years, but just for my friends and family. Website and content? I’ve been searching my brain to figure that one out! I really am a storyteller, so just coming up with a few lines for Twitter or a few paragraphs for a blog are really challenging for me. I’m not even good at filling out greeting cards! If you have any suggestions, I’m all ears… :)

  • What I meant by “platform” concerns your following…the main thing you have to offer the world that draws people. Almost like a political platform, what you stand for. Why do people come to you? What are you the “go to guy” about? Also, it can be seen as the support of your followers that keep coming back to learn more.  @brijitreed

(if you want to alert someone that you have posted a response to their post, add their @name by clicking on that at the top right corner of their post and it will be added to your comment block and they will be notified…)

  • @deairby @digistreammedia @digistreammedia @brijitreed I think the person who originally posted this is no longer a Member, but I am interested in selling an eBook and would like to find out why one would sell through Amazon rather than directly from your own site.

    Thanks,

    Steve
