Alternatives to QR Codes? (11 posts)

  • QR codes are probably the most popular types of 2D bar codes, but what other alternatives are out there?

I know about Microsoft Tags, but are there other similar or competing technologies that you’ve run into?

  • wiki has a few bar code option http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcode#Matrix_.282D.29_barcodes

  • @richardmclaughlin — Nice addition.

@rich-brooks — The thing is, there are so many options for free QR code generation I don’t know why you’d need anything else if this is for business identification.  Right?

    Eileen :)

  • @rich-brooks – I think there was something called a smart tag, where you don’t need to scan a code, just scan it by taking a picture of it. No need to download a program to translate it.. however, If I remember in my research it was a very expensive option for the small business community. However, some of the new smart phones and tablets would have it, I would have to look back in my notes on this if you really want to know.

  • Augmented Reality has been around for a while and it is finally catching on. It is highly interactive, really engages users.

    Checkout these great promotional examples:

    Enjoy!

  • I’m with Cynthia – augmented reality will eventually replace QR codes. But especially for small businesses, this will still take a while to happen because of cost reasons.

    @dhsllc

  • I have yet to see anyone use a QR code. I hear that they are popular and for a while I saw a lot of them on store windows, etc., but I’m noticing them less and less. I wonder if it is a regional thing. Has anyone else experienced this?

  • AR can be cost prohibited but I think like everything else that could change in the future.

I don’t believe QR codes are going anywhere for a while. Most people and businesses don’t know how to use them. I believe that could be the main problem.

I have one on the back of my business cards. When I hand them out, folks scan the code and my contact info is automatically entered on their smart phone as a new contact. It has my name, company name, position, web address and phone numbers. Sure beats typing it all in – plus cards aren’t always that effective.

  • Great Tip Cynthia. @dhsllc

I’ll be looking into this one.  If the cost is prohibitive I’ll just have to wait though.

    Eileen :D

  • absolutely amazing, never heard of augmented reality, though not surprised @dhsllc

  • @deairby agencies are doing great things with it. I think it’s still a little ahead in its time though.
