Airtime.com Facebook’s answer to G+ Hangouts (9 posts)

  • Have you tried this yet? What do you like about this? Favorite feature?

  • @jasonwiser

Hi Jason – Yes, I used it a few days ago when it went live.  It is not facebook’s answer, it is Sean Parker and Shawn Fanning‘s version of the evolution of video chat, made available to facebook users.  I’ve used facebook’s video chat service, and Airtime certainly does have more features.

I like the fact that it is web based and the split screen is interesting, but that’s about it for now.  I feel the ability to randomly chat with other Internet users, based on mutual Facebook friends, is something some may find useful, but not this introvert.

I do not like the fact that Airtime can photograph the user.  Monitoring and censoring chats, in the name of safety, doesn’t sit well with me.  And random incoming chats, I found to be annoying.  I don’t believe I’ll be using it for business anytime soon.  Here’s a link to a recent article.

  • @jasonwiser Thanks for the heads up, I had not tried Airtime yet. And I appreciate @mgoes comments. Can’t say I like the any of the things outlined in your last paragraph.

  • Yeah Mike thanks for the review. @mgoes

  • @mgoes Thanks for all the info. Interesting about the random video chat pop-ups … can you turn that feature off?

  • @amyhall

Amy, I did not spend enough time on it to learn all the features.  I imagine if you cannot turn it off now, you will be able to soon, as the service seems to be a work in progress.

In any event, I will not be using the service for business because of Airtime’s ability to monitor, censor, and photograph the user.  I will not be going back anytime soon to check for updates.

It got slammed in the press because the demo was so glitchy. Here’s the article I read: http://articles.cnn.com/2012-06-05/tech/tech_innovation_airtime-failure_1_video-chat-chatroulette-olivia-munn?_s=PM:TECH

That being said, I haven’t tried it myself.

  • Jason Wiser

I have never seen Airtime work for anyone yet.I could not even get it to load.   I use Skype or Google + instead.  With Google you can Hang Out with up to 10 people (have they changed that yet)   I prefer to  invite up to 30 people for a group chat on Skype.  With either of these two, you can do screenshares which is nice, share documents and have face to face interactions.

  • I have not heard of Airtime, but I have tried the G+ hangout. I had a personal 3-way video chat going and it went very well. My understanding is that from a personal page you can have up to 10 but a business page is unlimited.
