We have a whole network of affiliates, each on their own subdomain (URL example affiliatecompanyname.ineedlabs.com) which is basically a mirrored copy of our main site with their name dropped in, in place of ours. Up til now, I’ve been reticent in allowing Google to index their sites & out of fear getting dinged for having dupe content… should I be afraid?

@chrisloeser Let me get this straight each affiliate has their own sub-domain.*child (so far so good). Each of these sub-domains are a mirror of the domain *mother. That is also fine well maybe…
You can have marketing material for your affiliates e.g. banners, text ads, video etc. that will be used across all of your children. However, the content articles, can’t just be copied and pasted mother to child that is certainly duplicated content and will need to be changed our else you will get slapped by the Panda.
Do you have an Affiliate Agreement? Here is a good read on what you need to include to protect yourself.

I asked the brains of my operation about this concern. He said that you will have the same issues with products and descriptions as you will with articles. Duplicate content is duplicate content regardless of type. Hope that helps. We have an affiliate program and offer our affiliates banners to choose from to add to their own sites.

What if you setup a noindex for your affiliates, or at least made your content the primary content?

That’s kind of what we have rolling right now, any of the subdomains.ineedlabs.com have the (noindex) assigned to them… each of them is really a direct replicate of the main site aside from company name & contact number, so if there’s a chance we get dinged for one… we’ll get dinged for all!
