Advice on working with clients on content creation (6 posts)

  • I am just starting my social media business, and I wanted to know if anyone uses a particular content template/calendar that they use when discussing possible content ideas with clients.

Do you talk/meet with clients weekly to develop new messaging ideas? I ask because businesses that already blog a lot and have an active site would not necessarily be hard to create content for….but I want to be ready for potential clients that may not have much going on with their site, therefore making content creation for social media purposes challenging.

  • Based on the type of business, I first create a content list and calendar with some ‘umbrella’ topics so that my customer can see where I’m heading. If she/he’s fine with the topics, I work out the schedule and content in more detail. I work quite independently but it’s always good to catch up with the customer regularely to see what’s new. If you don’t talk, you might miss out on spontanuous activities or news that would make a great story. I usually catch up once a week or max once every 10 days, if my customers don’t contact me proactively…

  • Thanks for the advice Claudia. I am moving towards the direction of a content list/calendar.The marketing team over at HubSpot sent me an article about content calendars, but I wanted to get feedback from people like yourself regarding how you help to craft/maintain consistent content.

  • as an outsider and more in line with the clients opinion  of the presentation……..i think  you would  be ahead if  you   tried hard  to  absorb  the  clients   world    before   proposing  anything….a  couple of   hours on google    on  saint  bernards  if,  say, your  client was a saint bernard  breeder…..  or  some time on   trucker forums if  your   client  was in that industry…

…a little  background  work   would  probably  be worth your time…….

the  nicest thing  would  be a real sit down with the client  and   try and see what their main  concerns  and  goals  are..try to  get  your  client  to really talk to you….  ..what they think is their best thing   etc….that way  you  could  get   a    good  general direction    before   framing it all into   your  presentation….i  would want  to think  my media  person  knew my   message  loud and  clear….

if im hip hop i dont want to sound like mary poppins andif im  mary poppins i dont want to sound like   madonna….. and  i sure dont want to sound like   homoginized  boring  middle of the  roaad   ……also i would put a nice   cheery  smile on  your  presentation picture…

if  you ever  work with small retail i would have lots of   feedback for you….we are thrilled with our  social media….

    good luck……

  • @alanholmes Here’s an excellent piece from the Content Marketing Institute – it includes links to some really useful templates you can use for content creation and planning, etc.  You’ll find a content mapping template, a content questionnaire and lots, lots more.
