Advice on what a good number of Pinterest boards is (17 posts)

  • I haven’t ever seen any guideline on what might be an optimal # of Pinterest boards to have?  I created a Pinterest account for my husband’s financial planning practice (which was not an easy task – financial planning runs the risk of snoozer material!)  http://pinterest.com/markzaifman/

    I wonder if anyone has seen any data (I like data) on the optimum number of boards before visitors bet bored. Dan Zarella are you out there?

  • Hi Pat, I’m not going to suggest a number for you and you have put some very interesting boards together. My question is are you sure you want your political position so front and center? Just opinion but I am at the other end….. Right wing, and I strive to keep my politics separate from business.

  • I am not sure, but I think if you have 2 many people will only follow the ones they like. I am still playing around and expirementing.. One of my social media guides swears by it, but just like everything it takes time to learn and apply to business. Check out mine if you would like.  http://pinterest.com/prestoninterest/ - no idea why I set it up this way- probably should have used my full name… just don’t trust new sites with my full name.. did the same with Twitter years ago..

    @prsanibel @pchiappa

  • i have a  large  n;umber of boards, over 40….but i dont think   many  of my  followers   enjoy  everyone of them….  i see  each board as  finding their own  followers….. and as a follower im the same,  checking in on some andignoring   others within the same   person….but im pretty diverse…. http://www.pinterest.com/annatgreenoak

    also wouldnt want to see  anyones  politics, especially not  front and center,,,,  unless  its  ALL about  politics…..seeing  my  boards, favorite  guys , etc..  you might  easily  guess my poitics  but im not  on pinterest  for that….it would  be a turnoff ….

  • @prsanibel your post made me laugh a bit…

    As both Mark’s wife and marketing person, I have asked that he ‘tone it down’ in terms of his politics. Nothing doing says he… so I work with it.

  • @annfurnivall – I love your boards and your style Anne and never tire of perusing.
    40 boards of gorgeous items is certainly not too many. But an industry like ours – blech. So I know my question will not have one specific answer, but again, I’m wondering about some guidelines.
    I posted the same question on Hubspot – Dan Zarella is the science geek over there – he is all about data, so maybe I inspired him to dig into Pinterest to get even more data.
    Yikes – I didn’t think Mark’s politics were so front and center on Pinterest as to offend. I’ll go take a look and see if I can’t very quietly edit a bit…
    Thanks for your input!

  • gee thanks  pat…..

    . i would  just  move the offending  board  down into  the   lower levels…lol…

    .p.s.  i love  his politics….

  • @prestonodenbrett I too am still playing around and experimenting. I enjoy Pinterest, so I sure don’t mind playing around on it for Mark’s financial planning practice. I just want to make sure I don’ go crazy overboard on it.

    You have some nice diverse boards as well Preston – I especially like the infographic board and the MN board.

    It’s always hard to know how much personal stuff to pin on what is basically a business account. (politics aside) Then again, it’s a way for people to get to know you a little better and discover shared interests should they become future clients.
    Finance people/companies have the stereotype of being boring and dull – (taped glasses and high waisted pants)  Pinterest is one way to shake things up!

  • BTW @annfurnivall – I can’t tell you how many people I have sent your Pinterest link to…

  • @annfurnivall – do you mean The People He Would Like to Have Dinner With board or On My Bookshelf? They seem pretty benign – then again we live in northern CA…

  • lol…..the one  with pictures  of   rachel and   the  prez…..

    i do  keep my  mainly  business ones at the top….

    …  are  you using  pinreach?  it  shows a lot ..about your    different  posts boards  repins  etc etc……….  for a while   my  most popular one was  ozzie  on a giant  couch  with his  wife…..?????   it shows  you whats  working   best  …

    @pchiappa

  • I feel the number of boards you post are in support your business.  I’m a party planner so my boards support the level of services I offer my clients.  There are many people out there today who are planning there own social gatherings or are about to get married, so we post ideas from our prior events, from our vendors and those of which we find to be great, fun and exciting and ideas that I know we can produce or provide.  At times we may have to split a board to make the idea easier to find.  However, people will follow the board of there interest and there are those who follow all of our boards.  So far people have told us our Pinterest Board is exciting and full of ideas that support any event type and theme.  We love that.  So as they say “Happy Pinning”.

  • @lorrainetpenn i think about every  bride  i talk  to  thru  or  store   uses pinterest!!!….

  • @pchiappa @lorrainetpenn I agree with Lorraine. Use the number of boards that support your business. Formulas don’t work with every business type.

  • thanks for tip on Pinreach – I will check it out @annfurnivall.
    @lorrainetpenn – if you think about the size of a bridal magazine (phone book weight) and the size of a financial planning magazine (featherweight) it makes sense that future brides will happily search though as many boards as you could offer. It really does vary from biz to biz. thanks for your response.
    Thanks for weighing in @amyhallbiz  (there will always be that geek side of me wanting a statistic…)

  • @pchiappa Thanks for the comment on the diverse boards.. .guess I never thought of that, just did it.. just added cool for images that I think really stand out or I go wow when I see them?  I know of financial side.. Used to Work for RBS World Pay… Could never get people excited about CC fees, until I showed them what we could do.

  • For anyone who was stillcurious about a guideline to my original question of how many boards etc. – I just found this great post by Jeff Bullas answering my question.

    In a nutshell, his advice is 20-25 boards with a minimum of 8-10 pins each.
