Addicted to Social Media? (14 posts)

  • Do you ever get the feeling you are unable to let go of your social media presence? You feel you always “have to” check your twitter handle, hootsuite account, facebook page, G+ page, email inbox or blog dashboard “just one more time” before moving on to other daily chores?

How do you cope with social media addiction? ;-)

  • Please God help me to accept the things I cannot change, change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference!  LOL

How many of us turn on our computers before ANYTHINg else in the morning!?!?

  • I am definitely addicted. When I hit a certain point (difficult to describe what that is, but I know when I hit it based on how I’m feeling) I take a weekend day or the entire weekend off from it. I return to the social media madness feeling calm, focused and excited.

  • Oh yes, very addicted! LOL It’s not just my job, it’s my life. Has been for 11 years and only strengthens with time. :)

I do get exhausted sometimes and have to step away for a day or two, but I always come back more addicted than ever!

  • Yes, there are signs. First thing with my coffee in the am is the iPad and email, followed by a scan of FB.

But, I am trying to put the rest on a scheduled time during the workday, so I don’t overspend time on the various outlets. I find a quick 2-4 min check of HootSuite helps me with ideas and allows me to find interesting info…but then I have to battle myself to save them for later and get onto the day’s priorities.

  • @charlynshelton-socialmediainterpreter @karenataylor @morganbarnhart @joanmuschampfagnani Glad to hear I’m not alone “addicted” to social media. Just posting this topic for discussion on a Sunday felt ironic enough… ;-)

I concur with some of the tricks mentioned: taking a full day off from online presence every now and then, using tools like Hootsuite to focus efforts and, more importantly, imposing some self-discipline. Personally, I take a look at my various accounts in the morning for 15-20 minutes, will do so again around lunch time for about 30 minutes, then late afternoon or before dinner for another 15-20 minutes. That way, you’re looking at roughly one hour per day, but in precise time slots.
(But yes, I often stray from this pattern when there is a break or unexpected waiting time somewhere. Smartphones be damned!)

  • I find it is very important to have a specific schedule for my SM activities. I have set times and limitations.  Without this you can spend way too much time on SM.

  • Hi I’m Dyane and I’m a SM Junkie! I have finally gotten past the have to read it all, watch all the Webinars, listen to all the Teleclasses and get all the Newsletters in my inbox phase. Its been crazy for the past 3 years. I had to take a step back, and really focus on the things that will serve my business directly. I had start focusing on the information that is a priority right now. Right now, I need to focus on my Blog. My focus now, is on my site, promoting my posts and getting my message to clients. What the rest of the SM world is doing right now, has to take a back seat. I used to get sooooo wrapped up posts by the Gurus that I would hit an information overloaded wall before I started my workday. Don’t get me wrong, I still want to keep up but I had to opt-out, delete profiles, and emails about Webinars that don’t help my focus right now. I still share content that is helpful and relevant to my customers on SM but I had to “trim the fat” if you know what I mean. :-) I call it sharpening my tools. I started doing all of that in Nov ’11. I’m not there yet but I am getting much more of my work done because of the changes I AM making. Thank you for letting me share. LOL

  • Can we form an SMA chapter, online LOL? @charlynshelton-socialmediainterpreter @fredericgonzalo (posting on Sunday? and I’m here, too!)  @morganbarnhart Just when you were getting there, SME came along! @dyanebradley

  • @deairby @dyanebradley I have only one thing to say after reading both your posts: AMEN!

    LOL ;-)

  • Amen, indeed! :)   @fredericgonzalo

  • I’m so glad you started this thread.  @fredericgonzalo It is wonderful to see that I’m not alone. There is so much “Brain Candy” online and I have a hard time saying “NO”! Hehehehehe

  • I MUST adopt your term “brain candy!” When I had my gift shop, ladies would come in and exclaim, “Oh, look at all the eye candy!” Brain candy works great, too. @dyanebradley

  • Yes. It is a big problem for me too. When my SM use was just social, I could postpone it until the evening but now that I am pitching my business through SM it is too tempting to open up. The scheduled start times work fine, but the scheduled stop times do not. sigh!
