2 internet paths (5 posts)

  • being on here  is  so   rewarding…..from  some posts on here    im looking at our web  presence  as  2  main  pathways  to our store..

.facebook…which is huge  and a  way to find us, thru  your  friends mainly…..this  has  engaged  hundreds of  customers  with us  in ways we never had  before… maybe graph search will grow  into a  relevant   search engine  , that would  be nice…….

..and  google   still the very   best  search engine for  finding us….

im  so   thankful for  both paths….and i  keep   open to others…google +, blogs, a ning or 2, come to mind….ive tried and  stopped  bothering with those …for now…

i know i should  do you tube  but  cant  get  around to it…

  • HI @annfurnivall —

Things have been going in new and different directions here too.  Suddenly there are pathways to follow that were there all along, I had just chosen not to take them at any earlier juncture.

The SEO side has really boosted the mini-website-building side in the past six months – but content writing seems to have taken an extended holiday.

At least we are versatile enough to have several good services going well at any given time. I do think Google+ is the way to go for my type of biz and of course, I’m still a twitter baby!

What works for one type of biz can be fodder for another. I know your (Ann) FB is where it’s at for you.

  • @supereb ditto, i never want to have all my  eggs in one  basket…its  true, .im all about  facebook  but   actually  i value  our   web as much or more than   facebook…its over 10 yrs old  and has  brought us    many many  customers….some  from  very  far away..we are super easy to find on  google….  first page   usually in our main  category,,,….

..its not as wild  and  interactive and fun as  facebook   thats  for sure…i have to  do things  on  facebook  every day in  response to c ustomers  plus my posts…i can  do  about everything on  facebook  and on the web i can do nothing….all has to be done  by our tekk people….  thats a pretty big   diffference in the 2….and maybe  why  some  dont mess with a website….

When I look at our stats I see that Google is probably the #1 driver of traffic, but then it splinters. We get a lot of traffic from FB & Twitter, a lot from our blog (which is under a different domain), and depending on the last time I wrote for the SME, a bunch from there, too.

I had a nice interview w/Derek Halpern the other day and we were chatting about SEO. We both agreed that search traffic is good, but it’s a challenge to rely to heavily on just one source of traffic.

Google might change its algorithm. Facebook may change edgerank. Twitter might go out of business. Pinterest may stop being cool.

It’s important to leverage as many channels as you can manage, but ultimately you need to build your list. That’s something you own, and you can continue to use even after the current social media platforms have long gone away.

  • @rich-brooks  very  good  advice….our list is   a 3500  person email database of actual customers or at least  folks  who   have  been in the store…our database   for snail mail is  even  bigger  and   is over  25 yrs old.. …our  golden egg!!!..lol…..keeping all that   up to date and   taking  inert   names off is a  big  job….

im  glad  you said  google could  change  too…thats  the  reality i see….i dont see  facebook as  that much  more fluid  than  google….they  could  both  change   …but imho…they  both  want to be  of  big use to us….

i  really like   getting  results from  both…right now…especially  since  the  ways  to reach new  people    are  quite  a bit  different…on  facebook  they dont have to  be searching for us,  we might just  show  up on a friends  feed…thats  so  great for us, from a local ,  drive  to our store,   point of  view…!!!
