Work demanding more Facebook likes (23 posts)

Topic tags: engagement, likes
  • The company is getting bothered about FB likes….to the point of demanding get more or go…..

I started with the company at the begining of the year..at that point the FB page and well Social Media in general was basically not being utillised…they had a page with no likes.

Since Feb I moved it upto 160, which isn’t much and the twitter from  zero to 530. I have a good engagement with folllowers across our social media outlets…YouTube has gone from 700 views to 4,000…

The main problem is the product is new to the UK market and the dmi graphic they are currently targeting are involved in the classic car industry, which in general don’t utilise social media in the same way as a younger demi graphic. Nearly 80-90% of our distributors don’t use social media because their customers don’t really use it.

So the target audience the company has been targeting through mainstream marketing and advertising don’t use or are interested in our social media outlets.

This is my problem because I’m having to try and engage an audience who as yet aren’t targeted with our product, which means they don’t even know our product exists.

    Any suggestions/help

I’m not a newbie, I’ve been in the media and PR industry since 1997….but this task is getting the better of me.

  • how about spreading the love. instead of going for classic car lovers you can target muscle car lovers. You can connect people today with anything of the past.
If you were alive in 1712, which horse drawn carriage would have been your chick magnet?

  • Try promoting the page on car forums? Failing that buy some advertising and target people with the correct interests.

  • Maybe this could help:

1 – Prepare several white papers that are really interesting for your target audience.

2- Use a tool that grant access to the white paper to those who “Like” or “tweet” your social account

3- Use your site, newsletter, social accounts to promote the white paper.

4- Do that every 2 months

  • - Start crowdsourcing content. People who are into classic cars love showing off their rides. Have people submit their photos in exchange for promoting them ont he FB Page/Twitter.
    - Ask insightful questions and spark dialogue.
    - Integrate your traditional marketing campaigns and your social campaigns. They should tell one overall arc; if you enjoy the story we’re telling through this compelling ad, then you’ll need to finish it online. For example, you could show a classic car pre-restoration, boast about your awesome work, and then shoot a short time-lapsed video showing its restoration online. Point people using the traditional ad to that video.

  • @jasonhubbard this  seems  pretty hard and unfailr since the  targets  arent on there to target….you  cant   make  them  appear to be marketed to……  BUT   maybe they are already  on   you tube….and why not  try and present it that way…that  you tube is  where your  buyers  are…..it might help   to show  the boss  some   great  you tube pages in your  field…. sounds like hes  swallowed the koolaid on  facebook…that its  good  for   businesses….  yes  it is  fabulous   for  some  but not all… especially not  for  guys  over  40….

my dh  doesnt do facebook at all…but he looks up  cars on  you tube…also  we hear  from a tractor and combine   business on here  that uses it   very well…

p.s.  your page looks   very good…great  photos,  all the right stuff….

  • Cheers,

I market audience via YouTube, but the boss dosen’t see it as a viable online site. Its just a place to host videos as far as he’s concearned. Which is a shame, as it get a lot of hits, and people respond well to the videos I’ve made so far on a limited budget (using my own kit). I’m begining to think its time to move on.

  • Jason,

Has anyone at this organization thought about their goals and strategy on Facebook? Likes don’t equal spending. You’d get better results using sponsored stories which will at least be seen by people (a like doesn’t guarantee a view).

Something you might want to point out. Also: if you link the sponsored stories to images of beautiful cars, you can make the copy something like “Who doesn’t like the Bently 1935 blah blah blah” and link it to a tab with a video about the car.

That could potentially generate likes and shares, and if you insert some subtle info about your products… you could even get some sales – which should be the real goal, not likes.

    Jason

  • Have already approached sponsored ads/stories with the company, but they don’t consider Facebook an area in which to spend money in regards to advertising. They are very old school when it comes to marketing. I even suggested we add the FB page address on our adverts in magazines, but that was ignored.

I have been targeting the motor sports sector alongside the classic cars area, and to be honest most of our likes and twitter followers have come from motor sports. We’ve only just started dipping the proverbial toe into that market sponsoring drivers at a grass roots level this year. The motorsport product is getting known at a low level but we are having a better response on our social media outlets. The problem is we’re not marketing the motor sport product to the same extent as the classic product. The aim next year is to step this up a gear and bring out an all round car product as well, which would allow us to market a larger audience, yet the likely hood is I’ll probably be pushed out before then.

The main problem is that the company sees that social media is required but its not really considered part of the overall marketing stratergy..I’m kinda left stumbling around in the dark on the outside in that regard….I’m not considered a part of our marketing output…which is insane in my opinon…

Until recently there was no brand or style guide in the company until I wrote one…I do sometimes scratch my head in wonder at work…lol

  • It seems the boss is begining to realise that we’ve targeting the wrong demographic in regards to social media this year.

Our product was featured on the Discovery TV show Wheeler Dealers last night, off the back of that our website recieved a huge spike in visitors yesterday and today, but all our social media outlets had zero…..

Though he did ask how we could jump to 1000 new likes by end of next week without buying them…lol

  • Well Jason, when my boss asks slightly similar questions, I keep an excellent, high quality, brick wall in my cubicle to use in such circumstances.

I’d be happy to let you borrow it!

The only idea I have is to put something like a 1935 Mercedes up on your Facebook page in a drawing, where one way to enter is to like the page. That will get you to the 1,000 mark really quickly. Of course, after the auction you’ll loose a lot, but you’ll get there by the end of next week!

    Guaranteed.

Now, if they’re asking about quality likes, of people who will actually buy what you are selling, then that’s impossible.

I’m thinking that there is a reason someone cares so much about this issue now. Do the owners have kids or other social media savvy types in their family who might be raising a stink? It doesn’t do you much good to know, but I’m curious why the sudden interest.

  • No, he’s just obsessed with getting huge number of likes on the page…He does have an obsession with Red Bull and refers to them a lot…

He wants to be as big as possible…but no patience…

  • Well, if he wants quantity over quality, have you considered any of the numerous facebook “like ladders?” You know, the old I like you and you like me routine. Might buy you some more time.

  • If it was me, I would be educating them on realistic expectations.

Then, if they want “likes” tell them to run a facebook ad campaign.

  • @jasonhubbard sometimes you just have to do what’s in your long-time best interest!! And sometimes too… you can’t argue with crazy!

  • I would recommend some sort of contest with a prize. It doesn’t have to be a large or expensive prize. I have had a lot of success with running small, 1-day contests (our “like us & win” campaign, where the participants had to “like” our page & “like the picture” to win. Every time I run this contest I see anywhere from 30-50 new likes.
Post a funny picture and have followers make up a funny caption to make it interactive.

A great way to share your page would be running a contest where you post a picture of the prize & in order for participants to be eligible they need to “share it.” That way your Facebook page & the contest will be seen by their friends, and the chances that you’ll gain more friends is very high.

From running a Facebook page with almost 4,000 fans, i have realized that the best way to gain likes is to give something away. Even if it is just 2 movie passes, a $50 gas card, etc. Gas is so expensive these days and relates to cars…might be something to look in to. Good luck!

  • @lauren-topliffe is that allowed? Don’t you need to run contest through facebook apps?, you can’t run contest directly in you facebook page…

  • @Pamela Diaz This is true. Our contest platform is in the process of being developed through our website provider. In the meantime, I admit, I have been running contests without one :/ Praying that Mr. Zuckerberg doesn’t notice!

Sometimes you gotta do what cha gotta do to get ahead! Could any recommend a contest app that they have used? One that won’t cause my boss to have a heart attack when I tell her the cost? Wildfire? Strutta? Any suggestions?

  • Yes @lauren-topliffe – I have used EasyPromos before and the 1st contest you do with them is FREE and their software is easy to use (simple but easy). Hope that helps! =)
