whats safe… (5 posts)

  • grandma mary had a scary report on her   page…….  a  big   active  facebook user  got   banned  for   copyright issues…

    …at the same time i see  so many   images  flying around facebook….being   seen and  re seen  over and over….   and n ot  documented..images  frreely used  by   pages …. even  by  some of the  experts….its  such a paradox….

    what do  you think?  i want to be safe, but  not paranoid…

  • Hi @annfurnivall – so sorry for the delay in getting back to you here!  Here’s the report that was referenced for everyone else’s benefit:  http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57526539-93/facebook-shutters-the-cool-hunter-for-copyright-issues/  The page had 800,000 Likes and was shut down for copyright infringement.

    The problem seems to be that they were uploading photos to their Facebook Page without attribution and without owner permission.  They claimed that they “couldn’t find” the rightful owner of the photos.  But if that happens enough, and if the Page is reported enough, then Facebook will find you :)

    There are a lot of pages doing this.  I think the biggest problem is with artists who make their living selling their images.  Cartoonists, photographers etc.  I know I have stopped uploading anything that isn’t mine.  I will share those things but it will be the other page who gets in trouble :)

    What are others thoughts?

  • @andrea-vahl thanks  so much..

    . what im hearing you   say is  that  sharing off  facebook seems   safer than plucking   off  google or   pinterest….   thats  going to be my  guideline, altho   grabbing  from  google is  so   nice and easy….i use  some   100  yr old  images…so not worried there…

  • Yes, sharing any photos that are your own is fine @annfurnivall  You can also share images from sites that have a creative commons area that photographers have said you can share the image with attribution back to them.  Flickr has this as well as a site called Compfight (www.compfight.com) that has images you can share.

    You are probably safe on some of those old images.

  • i knew i could  share my own photos.and i  have heard of the  commmons  …but   what  did you  mean when you said

     ” I will share those things but it will be the other page who gets in trouble “

    are  you talking about   sharing  the  fun   pictures  that  fly around   facebook?  i thought [hoped]  you were saying  that sharing  those   kinds of  pictures  was pretty safe,  since it  was  still connected  to another page….  ???? is  that what you were saying?

      so many pages   do it, obviously…..

    i stay away  from posting pinterest pictures…. but i sure dont  care if someone posts my pictures…thats why i  put them out there….

    @andrea-vahl
