What is the essence of adding members as friends in this club? (55 posts)

Topic tags: friends, members
  • I’ve always wondered why we should bother adding members as friends in this club since there is no way all your friends can see your posting just like Facebook neither can you message all or most of your friends at the same time.

Can somebody please explain? Cuz i really need to understand or am i missing something?

    Thanks for your anticipated explanations

    Dan

  • I thought it was cool to add friends here, but If I cant communicate with them in a broadcast manner, it kind of loses its value.

  • @vincentedwards Exactly my thoughts too, i’ve been thinking on these and it hasn’t added up; i’ve got over 500 friends in this club. The big question is how on earth am i supposed to communicate with them? Individually? No way

  • Hi Dan, I wondered the same. I’ve had people reach out to me to be friends, but I haven’t made the effort to ‘friend’ others. I just keep an eye on the forums and communicate through those.

  • Hmmm… It’s not right, if that’s the case the friendship stuff should be scrapped and let’s all communicate through the forums

  • The limitation is not necessarily because of Social Media Examiner, the limitation could be because of the platform itself (wordpress / buddypress) I believe.  Thats why I say on my profile, just add my on facebook or google.

  • Yeah, but if SME wanted the feature they would have easily gotten a developer to work around it.

Anyways connect with me on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/adiq8social; drop your link so i can connect with you too

  • Hi Dan, Here is why I friend people:

    1. If they friend you, it is the polite thing to do.
    2. You might find out it is a mutually beneficially relationship worth more than to social media ships passing in the night.
    3. You can talk to as many people that tune in to follow the topic (Like I have followed this one).
    4. If they are not interested there are plenty of others.
    5. Finally, I am thrashing my way through the social media jungle, a leader of my merry band, and sometimes it is nice to get a second opinion (or a first), share war stories, and sometimes just to vent at the injustice of Google..or Facebook…or whatever.

In other words, I am not alone out here in cyberspace, Get it now?

FYI, I ‘Liked” your Fb site. I gotta look at it more but what I saw was pretty cool. I am gonna try the monkey. You will find me at http://www.facebook.com/techeditz.-Ellen

  • We do have an Activity stream that your friends can see, @dannish247 but I think many people are not using it.  Take a look at the Activity section in:   :http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/getting-started-guide/

I think most communication is through the forums themselves.  I think that participating in the conversation is the best way to be seen here and so maybe you decide that friending everyone isn’t necessary for what you want to do.  I think  @ellenpartal has some great points on why people would friend each other here.

  • I like requesting and accepting friendships because it gives me the chance (well, the excuse) to go and check out peoples profiles on other platforms like LinkedIn.  I have already had a few conversations with people I have met here outside the forums which I would never had done hadn’t I gone through this exercise.  It has also made me realise how many extraordinarily talented and successful people there are here.

  • I agree with  @samanthagentile - I do the same. .it helps me connect.

  • @andrea-vahl Thanks Andrea. You know, I was just looking at the Summit registration and reflecting back a year ago. It someways it seems like yesterday! I remember how totally alone I felt until that conference. I have friends that build websites, others that sell online advertising, as I did, some offer SEO.. BUT no one I knew was building a business with social media management as the primary focus. There was no one I could say ‘Hey, what’s the best time to post on Fb?” or “Am I charging enough-to much?” “Am I really providing value?” Turns out I was, and I am but I am not sure I would be as confident if not for this site and that 1st summit. The topics look every bit as intriguing this year.. I especially loved the Twitter feed and the LinkedIn Group.

  • I want to ask @andrea-vahl, does all your friends get a notification when you make a post in the club? @ellenpartal i understand what you are saying, but i was thinking that communication needs to be on steroids so to speak since we are social people, such that it’s easier to see what your friends are posting or commenting on and you could chime in if you wanted to. I’ve got over 500 friends and it’s impossible to manually check up on all of them, but if i could see a notification of what they are doing, then it’ll make a lot of sense and will make the networking so much more fun. Hope you get my point? By the way i’ve liked your page too. @samanthagentile and  @tamarnaveh-koren  you see exactly, that’s what i’m talking about, you need to manually check people profiles to connect with them, that’s time consuming.

    Hope i’m clear on this

    Dan

  • @ellenpartal What App are you using for your Fan of the Week tab?

  • @dannish247 Hello Dan! I friend people so I can send them private messages if a topic is going out of the realm of the clubs, or I want to share something that isn’t ready for public viewing – such as a Facebook tab that I haven’t received compliance approval on, and thus can’t just shove live. For that, private communication works wonders!

  • @dannish247 Here is the linkL  https://apps.facebook.com/fanofthe/?fb_source=bookmark_seall&ref=bookmarks. Its called Fan Of The Week and I got it from here. The article I got it from is http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/top-10-facebook-apps-for-fan-engagement-and-building-community/.I can tell you that all of the pages I have added it to have been very excited about it. One guy commented 76 times in one day he wanted it so bad! lol

  • @jasonreilly The thing is how many people do you really have time to message at once, it’s really time-consuming. @ellenpartal thanks i’ll check it out now

  • @dannish247 Very good point! I try to avoid mass messaging if I can (although you can send to more then one person). However, if I have a single question, or something worth exploring, but I don’t want to thread jack, then messaging makes it possible. I’m using it right now actually to get some help on a Credit Union page right now which I can’t make public! :D

  • @ellenpartal You can only have one fan of the week, check out Booshaka, i think it’s a better App, check out the Free plan called Top Fans. Let me know what you think.

  • @jasonreilly @dannish247. Dan I am guessing you are an analytic sort of chap. A good think in our field. I might just throw out there that you might be over-thinking this whole thing. Get friends (you can never have to many) Go ahead and Like other pages and let us like yours. There is safety in numbers and someone said its boasting rights. What I have done is asked some of the pages that might be a better fit to like one of my clients (ie enviornmental services liked my wastewater solutions page.) HOWEVER, I will give you that it is very very very time consuming. trying to keep up with my correspondence as well as my clients is a 40 your a day job. good thing I love it!

  • @dannish247 I have Fan of the week on 9 different pages I  manage all under the same email. But I will check that out. thank you

  • @jasonreilly well said, it’s just that i like to think how to make things better, but it’s ok
What do you do? Can i see your Facebook page? Your personal page that is; i know you manage lots of them.
    Thanks

  • @ellenpartal lol, did you study psychology? You see, i’ve got over 600 friends in this club,so i was thinking of the best way to network and communicate with them; ofcourse messaging them one after the other is a NO NO. That’s how i got thinking about this really

  • @dannish247 Of course! I work for a Credit Union, we’re WAY better then banks. You can check out out our Facebook page here:

    http://www.facebook.com/BellwetherCU

I have set up our history, and every image we have up is compliance approved! So we’re very happy. Enjoy! I’m going to be adding tabs, but the tabs are only on my private test page so I can see what things look like.

    Jason

  • @jasonreilly You got a good page, i left a comment on your page and Liked it too. You can like mine too here http://www.facebook.com/adiq8social

  • @dannish247 Hello Dan! I returned the favor! I can’t post an immediate reply back on our page (we’re required to put all comments through management for quick compliance check) but I appreciate the like and the comment and can post quicker here :D

  • @jasonreilly Hmm… that’s some tough Social Media policy; Anyways i appreciate a great deal

  • @dannish247 Because of our status as a Financial Institution, we have strict regulations on actions we can take and do in publicly available forums. We’re very strict. Private forums like this are a little more relaxed, but still, no swearing or anything like that :D Smiley faces are okay!

  • @jasonreilly  what about me? did you see my page? lol. I will grant you its not as flashy as Dans. http://www.tech@dannish247 lol no psy but I am a mother of 2 and have been in sales for many years which makes me a good listener. What about the Live Chat and Reward apps. Have you used the live chat? that could be interesting. I am currently working on creating a eletter template and interactive calendar I got post to a website, blog, FB and Google+ for a client.

  • @jasonreilly Good, i understand. Thanks again

  • @dannish247 fyi, 60 friends? you clearly out social butterflied me!. Please know I am just kidding. I am fiesty right now as I have been fighting technology and soon Network solutions to wrestle a domain name back from them!

  • @ellenpartal Done! :) I just went and sent you a like from my personal page!

  • @ellenpartal Yeah the Live chat is ready to start working when i turn it on; i intentionally don’t want it on yet, we are working on launching a Web Hosting Giveaway to boost the exposure of my page… we are giving away Unlimited Disk Space, Bandwidth, Domains, Emails & many more for only $1 per/month; this promo should be live in 3days. So when it  goes live then the LiveChat will come up, we can chat with fans right on my Facebook page. Then the Reward App too is live but until there’s much activity on the page there’s not much that can be done with the Reward.

Have you taken a look at Booshaka yet? I think it’s more engaging, i might be wrong though, you be the judge.

Do you think your fans will be interested in our Web Hosting Giveaway?

    Dan

  • @jasonreilly thank you Jason, thats awesome. I could use a credit union. Do you accept sleepless web designers from the west coast? @dannish247 Please go to http://www.facebook.com/takanatech and like his page. I will have him follow the link when it comes up. He is an it guy and strategic business consultant so there might be some interest there. I have another IT guy (Sergai) and I will pass it on to him. Other than that the rest of my clients would rather go to the dentist than know what they need bandwidth.

  • @ellenpartal Ellen, we’re in New Hampshire, and technically you have to be in New Hampshire to qualify for membership! I’m going to shoot you a private message, however, and see if I can help you find a place to go – it’s actually my job to do this, so I don’t mind :D

  • @ellenpartal lol, the link you sent to me returned a 404 error message

  • @jasonreilly I knew I liked you. thank you

  • @dannish247 oops, sorry, he dosen’t have enough fans to hare a personal url yet.  Here you go.  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Takana-iTechnology-Solutions/185078144873261.thanks for letting me know.

  • I have also had many “dodgy looking” friend requests too!

  • @dannish247  Dan, you know this is a problem on facebook too, right? Whats the point of having “LIKERS” if you cant message them…. Something is amiss here.

  • @dannish247

    Dan,

You can easily track all the activity of your friends as follows:

    GO here:
    http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/activity/

    Click on the friends tab.

    Mike

  • @mike-stelzner Thanks for your response, clearly there are features i’ve not uncovered yet on SME club. Thanks again.

But Mike, i’ve got a question… When i create a new thread, who gets notified? does all my friends get notified? Because i’m thinking of how to make this a real social experience for us, even though i’m not routing for ability to message all your friends as this could spark lots of spam messages; but a notification of a post just made by a friend will not be out of place and this will really spark more interactions in the club.

    Over to you Mike.

    Dan

  • I’m (obviously) not Mike ;) , but I speculate that only SME members who have their email status set to “Send new topics as they arrive (but no replies)” get notified of new threads in the respective club.

I receive notices of all new topics in all clubs; they’re not limited to those individuals with whom I’ve already connected via the SME Friend option.  I suppose it’s possible that I’d still receive notice of a new topic started by a Friend in a club I’ve got muted (by not opting in on the blanket club notice), but I’m still guessing the answer is no.

On the remote chance these topic notice settings haven’t yet caught your eye, they’re located on the main page for any of the clubs.  Under the “New Topic” link, you’ll see a  line that says “Your email status is [your selection] (change)”.  The three possibilities are:

No Email – I will read this club on the web
New Topics – Send new topics as they arrive (but no replies)
All Email – Send all club activity as it arrives

I have mine set for the “New Topics” so that I can keep an eye out for anything of interest to me.  Once there’s a thread that I’m interested in and/or participating in, I make sure my setting for that particular thread is set to “Follow”.

  • @hjelliott Hi Holly, you have done justice to the concern, i duff my heart for you dear.

Send me your Facebook Page link, i should like your page.

    Thanks again.

Please join my Linkedin group… http://www.linkedin.com/groups/Social-Media-Networking-Marketing-Professionals-4398514?gid=4398514&trk=hb_side_g

  • @dannish247

@hjelliott is correct.  This club is not about notifications from friends, it’s about networking.  If you want to get notified, you need to turn on the capabilities as Holly stated.

  • @mike-stelzner Thanks
