What game-changers do you see for Facebook in 2012? (16 posts)

  • Mashable ran this post today, asking what the future holds for the social media powerhouse that is Facebook. Among the questions asked:
    - Will the IPO finally take place, meaning Facebook would go public?
    - Will Zuckerberg will be the next Jobs?
    - How will Facebook sustain its leadership position versus other platforms? Will it remain the go-to destination, or will mainstream tire and look elsewhere?
    - Do you see a Timeline use for your business?
    - What’s really behind the recent acquisition of Gowalla?

In other words, what do you think will happen with Facebook in the next year and how do you intend to deal with it? Is it at the center or your social media strategy, or is it just another tool in your kit that you manage accordingly?

    Curious to hear your thoughts.
    Cheers,
    Frederic

  • All great questions @fredericgonzalo!  I do think the IPO will drive change in Facebook.  They will look to become more profitable with their ads.  I do see them possible adding some Timeline features to the Pages to keep the look similar but I don’t think it makes sense for it to be completely like the profiles.  I could be wrong on that.  I also think Google+ will continue to gain ground and cause Facebook to innovate and differentiate.
    Other thoughts?

  • Thanks @andrea-vahl and yes, I agree Facebook will focus on becoming more profitable with ads and other revenue streams because of the upcoming IPO. Personally, I believe there will be a strong focus on making Facebook the go-to place for mobile platforms, including tablets, i.e. iPad. So we should look out for new apps, original gamification, and more.

It is said that of the 850 million users on Facebook, more than 350 million access it through mobile devices, and this share will only increase in coming years. And as you mention, with the increasing popularity of G+, Facebook will have to innovate and come up with defensive measures.

The one big piece I think is missing from Facebook platform is the transactional aspect. A few retailers and airlines have given it a try, but if people start to rely on Facebook as a go-to place to purchase and transact, it may become a killer competitive advantage. Not sure if this will happen in 2012 (or ever), but time will tell…

  • These are really good questions and having me scratching my head a bit thinking about how businesses might use Timeline – like you asked. Not sure how I feel about that.

I hope the IPO does happen and that it will force Facebook to better enforce their TOS. I imagine a lot of friend pages that are actually businesses will be deleted this year.

I’m grateful for the growth of Google + as it does force Facebook’s hand toward innovation.

Thanks for the thought provoking questions, @fredericgonzalo!

  • @fredericgonzalo great question :) my two cents:1. Facebook will drive the search from here on.2. I am not sure if Z can become SJ but he has given the world one thing that most of them are hooked on. However FB has made brands more social.3. Google+ will keep Facebook on its toes :) good for users and brands too4. Finally LBS has not taken up in India. Foursquare did one tie up but no ne knows where it disappeared. But Facebook taking up Gowolla is definite to be cracker only when they could provide incentives to users in their local areas.

Do share your thoughts guys :)

  • @prasantnaidu @traceywarren

Thanks for your feedback. Indeed, we have no crystal ball, so it’s tough to predict what will come in 2012. However, I would recommend reading these two posts to some light in this discussion:

The Year in Facebook Acquisitions is good read to better understand where Facebook will be headed in 2012. As Prasant mentioned, the acquisition of Gowall, along with the increasing focus on mobile, lends to believe facebook has not crossed off (yet) its strategy into location-based services (LBS).

Along the same lines, it seems Foursquare is at a cross-roads (pun intended). So the fight for LBS domination is far from over, unlike what some people thought once Gowalla was bought earlier this month. Read here: Foursquare’s claim to fame, the check-in, could become its downfall

Tracey, I agree about Timeline for business: it’s still a head-scratcher at this point, but surely some clever folks will come up with a way to monetize it, or at least make it significant for brands. We shall find out in 2012!

  • @fredericgonzalo thanks for your thoughts, i will read the article. however Foursquare being a location based product has a location problem at-least out of US and especially in India.recently told by a Foursquare evangelist to me in an interview :)

  • @prasantnaidu Thanks for the feedback, Prasant. By the way, I clicked on the link for the interview, it leads to an article on BMW (Mini) Facebook initiative in India. Interesting article, but no interview nor mention of Foursquare in there – wrong link, could it be?

  • @fredericgonzalo sorry wrong link. here is the correct one . thanks :)

  • @prasantnaidu Got it, read it. I would agree with these seven social media trends as key moving forward.

By the way, if you are interested in location-based marketing, a great video interview published today: ow.ly/8irGB

    Cheers,

  • @fredericgonzalo I could see Facebook implementing a meeting feature. Like google+ handouts. Google + will start to take market share away from Facebook and a lot from twitter is my prediction. You can turn your fan page into a website with the right Apps. All they need is a meeting place”

  • @sgsrecording Indeed, hangouts and circles are the two features that seem to give G+ an edge versus facebook, twitter and other populare social networks. It will be interesting to see how quickly and efficiently facebook will be able to replicate or improve.

With facebook acquiring Skype, you’d think a better version of hangout would be developed shortly, but it has yet to be seen. Time will tell, right?

  • Facebook bought Skype off of Microsoft? For how much? @fredericgonzalo

  • @sgsrecording My bad! Facebook did not acquire Skype, Microsoft did back in May 2011.
What I was refering to was the joint partnership between Facebook and Skype, announced in July, shortly after G+ had come out with its hangout feature.

  • @fredericgonzalo I 100% agree that Facebook will be the go to mobile platform in the future. Great post.

  • Well, looks like Facebook will have some big announcements this week, hence the press event coming this Wednesday. Curious, curious… ;-)
