Use Facebook notes for a blog? (6 posts)

  • I’m working with a gov’t agency who wants to start a blog and have it tightly integrated with their Facebook page (a young page – about 500 likes). Obviously they don’t care about revenue, so the only goal is to get their message in front of people.

They are very reluctant to use a new platform like Wordpress, so I’m wondering about using Facebook notes as a blogging platform.

Really the only other option they have is to post every blog post as a new page on their website and just have one page with a list of links as the ‘home’ of their blog on their site. Their site doesn’t support RSS so I can’t use any feed tools to pull the blog posts from their site to Facebook either.
So what I’m wondering is if people have any experience using Notes as a blog. How well do search engines index notes? Any other benefits or minuses I haven’t thought of?

  • I wouldn’t do it, @brianmulawka .  Facebook removed their RSS support for notes as far as I know.  Plus, you only get to have two tabs on the front of your timeline and still I don’t think people see it.  We can’t use a default tab anymore to send people there first before they go to the timeline.

WordPress has been around for awhile.  I would suggest you use that.  We actually have our blog hosted on Dreamhost, but using the WordPress themes: blog.nrcprograms.org.   It works very well for us.  Then we post to our Facebook page the content.

Other’s might have different experiences, so they will be interesting to hear.

    Good luck!

  • @asearfoss Thanks for the comments and suggestions. WordPress is definitely my preference too – but the agency has been  pretty adamant that they don’t want to work on another platform. It was hard enough to get them on Facebook in the first place!

  • @brianmulawka have they said -why- they are so set against it? I’m pretty sure you can drop the WordPress blog into a Facebook app anyway.

If you can show them that, explain how it works, and make a solid case for it by using statistics and previous results, they’ll hopefully budge.

I rarely see people using Notes on Facebook anymore. The Timeline format makes it less conducive for people to click the “Notes” app box.

I work with government agencies, too, so I know how difficult it is to convince them that the wheels of progress need to start turning. But I would suggest that if they WANT a blog, they need a reliable blogging platform (WordPress.org is my fave). They may be able to install the WordPress script so their blog displays as a page on their site, depending on the framework with which their website was designed.

If they’re not willing to use a standard blogging platform or to provide RSS capabilities, what’s the point of having a blog in the first place? No one will read it on Facebook, and they’ll be wasting their money and your time.

  • @laurachristianson – You said it perfectly, Laura!  :)
