Upload a video directly or link to YouTube? (7 posts)

  • Hey all,

I’m wondering what the consensus is in regards to posting video on Facebook.

Do you find it more beneficial to upload the video directly (plays inside FB) or link to a video on YouTube?

Looking forward to your comments … Scott

  • Sorry I missed this post @scottprock – Didn’t see it til today for some reason!

Anyway, I have mixed feelings about it.  I think there is value in uploading to Facebook because it appears bigger in the News Feed, it stays on the video tab for people to reference, and if people share it, you have a little link that tells people who don’t Like your Page already to Like it.  So that’s the good stuff.

On the other hand, YouTube views are also valuable.  YouTube ranks better in the search engines and I’ve often had a bunch of problems uploading a video file to Facebook.  Sometimes I’ve done both.

    What are others thoughts?

  • @scottprock i was  wondering about this too…. and  figured  to go  with  you tube  and  facebook….and  the  website…any  reason  not to do all?

  • I found success with integrating my YoutTube videos through an app on Facebook and linking my videos rather than uploading them on Facebook. I did this for a band’s page and it works pretty darn good. I’m a person that likes to keep my social channels clean and clear. If you visit this link you can find the install for the Youtube app. I promise it’s safe and I’m not a spammer :) http://www.involver.com/applications/

    Hope that helps.Cheers!

  • Hey guys,

It really depends on what you’re going to use the video for. I personally say do both!

    But here are the advantages.

    Facebook Video Upload:

    1. Looks bigger in timeline
    2. Can be used as an ad on Facebook
    3. Can still be embedded anywhere on the web
    YouTube Video Upload:
    1. Can be optimized for search engine traffic
    2. Can be used in YouTube ads
    3. Can be embedded anywhere on the web
There’s only one downside to YouTube on Facebook for your page, it operates as a thumbnail rather than the full width video.
    Hope that helps.

P.S. Involver is a really nice plugin-in as well. Use it to import your YouTube channel to your page as an App (Custom Tab), allowing your Facebook Fans to view your entire channel without leaving Facebook.

  • Aha .. looks like I need to update my notifications, LOL … I didn’t see the replies until today (3 weeks after I posted, whoops)

I appreciate the replies, and it makes sense to work them both ways depending on the goal of the video.

I have seen the Involver plugin and I can see how it has it’s benefits too.

My main curiosity would be on how effective is either option. I mean, would your visitors be more inclined to push play if they didn’t have to leave FB to watch your video? It seems it would have to be pretty compelling to move someone off of FB and over to YouTube … I guess the best way to find out is to test, right ;-)

    Thanks again for all the comments … Scott (  @andrea-vahl  @annfurnivall @brando-hills @dereck_arreguin )

  • Hey, I’m a newbie, Just joining in the fray.  Thought I’d say hello.  I’m new to the whole social media thing and am still feeling my way around Facebook & Twitter.
& Linkedin & Pinterest.  I went whole hog and joined the a bunch of them.  Now I’ve got to figure out how to use them.
    Glad to be here.
