Too Many ”Compers” (11 posts)

Topic tags: engagement, likes, Reach
  • Hi guys!

This forum is awesome and hopefully you guys can help me with a little issue I have.

I run social media for Creditplus Car Finance in the UK. I’ve been here for almost a year, and engagement has always been pretty low, but the higher-ups don’t really seem fussed about it. They seem to have the old-fashioned view that more likes is what we need, which I disagree with. The situation I find myself in is that we had run a couple of competitions over the last 6 months, which has significantly raised the Like count, but the engagement has stayed the same.

I’m talking 2300+ likes, with only 60-80 actually seeing the post (according to the view counter below each post saying how many people have seen it) and I’d be lucky to get one Like on a post or image in a month. This is incredibly frustrating. I know for a fact that the vast majority of these likes are “compers”, and not real people, but there’s no way to get rid of them.

I hear that FB are getting tougher on fake likes, but it doesn’t look like they’ve seen our page. At this point in time, the FB page is adding absolutely no value to the business from what I can see, so what would you do? I guess the options are to either delete the page and start again (which would be a shame as I’ve worked really hard on it), try and contact FB to see if there’s any way to get rid of these “compers”, or just keep going – going ahead with the new strategies I’ve been coming up with so that we attract new “real” likes which will eventually dilute all the fakes?

I believe that FB can be a great way to reach people, and for businesses to talk to potential and past clients, but I’m sure you can understand – shouting into the ether with no response is incredibly frustrating! Hope some of you might be able to help, it would be greatly appreciated.

  • @tcjw Hi Tom, my association’s FB page is almost to 2000; however we serve a niche market so I’m not expecting 100′s of 1000′s to Like us. Before Facebook tweaked EdgeRank in the fall, our reach was healthy at around 400 per post (3-4 per day). Now  the image / link based posts are generally under 100 while my text-only posts get almost 400 daily.

The main purpose of the page is to promote our events, esp. the annual conference. The rest of the year is just filler and trying to grow organically. It is a work in progress however as I would like more engagement like we have on Twitter (2600+).

Just keep playing around with your content, share others’ content and don’t forget to post on other pages! Also make sure that you have a dash of personality whenever appropriate. People like connecting with people.

A couple of random ideas for you: talk about car shows, talk about finance in general (how to get your dream car), look for dream garage content (I’m thinking HGTV). Maybe form some partnerships with car dealers to inject some timely content.

    Best wishes!Kristy

  • what’s the page?

  • @kc_kreative thanks so much for the tips. I guess I’ve just gotta keep getting good content on there and get the word out there using the other means available to me (we have a huge mailing list, for example). I really appreciate the help!

@mitch-rezman check out the page here. If you take a look, you’ll see I’ve been trying quite a few different things such as a “guess the car” game, the odd caption contest, galleries from car shows, posting videos and photos among other things.

If there’s anything I’m specifically doing wrong, please let me know. The company got a social media training guy in to chat to me a few weeks back, but he wasn’t able to suggest much to me that I wasn’t already doing. Any tips are appreciated! =]

  • I just had a quick scroll through your page.

The first thing that comes to mind is, don’t be so professional… I know what you are thinking, but really, inject a little humour and personality into posts.

Find some funny images, post some funny jokes. They don’t need to be completely irrelevant. Find some that apply to cars and or insurance and use for your own needs.
    Good luck!

  • @pacey, thanks for the response! I’m definitely going to add more fun, funny things to the page which might get more of a response!

  • @tcjw Here’s a photo you can have fun with: http://dailypicksandflicks.com/2012/07/02/daily-picdump-507/pick-up-truck-hauling-smart-car/
Another thought is hold a race of remote control cars in your office / parking lot – fun video potential.

BTW, in regards to @pacey‘s comment, I write a personal message each morning to start the day. It’s text-only but it gets lots of views. • @tcjw  I love your posts-  I think you are posting a great variety of fun, engaging posts.  I’m amazed that you aren’t getting any response on these.  I think you are right, it’s people who just went for the contest and probably some fake accounts.  Your page won’t be penalized, you may just see a big drop at some point of Likes.

One thing I don’t see is straight text posts which are getting more reach.  Photos are engaging but add in some text questions that are pure fun.  Or see if a Click Like if your happy it’s Friday post works.  Those are usually the ones I use to really gauge how many people might be seeing it.

Yes, I would just focus on trying to connect with real people.  I think a targeted ad campaign would be a good way to do that.

  • @tcjw Hi Tom, I really like your “Guess this car” posts. Those are always fun for me. I’m surprised your not getting more engagement on those. Maybe they are not reaching your fans. Can you “Add Targeting” to your posts to reach your “true” fans? I’m not sure if you have that capability on your page. Only one of my pages which has 7000 fans has that capability. All my other pages has less than 1000 and they don’t have that capability so I’m not sure what the criteria. Maybe others know the answer to that.

I see a lot of videos posted. In my experience they don’t get much engagement. I suggest posting an image (from the video) with a link to the video in the status.

One other thing I suggest is posting helpful information, nothing too heavy of a read but maybe a graphic or text with a single tip. Now that I think about it, how about having themed posts: Monday – tips, Wednesday – “guess this car”, Friday- humorous images.

    I hope these help :)

I’m seeing the same problem (attracting mostly “compers”) with a sweepstakes that I’m currently running. Originally this sweepstakes was going to be the first of 3 in the next 2 months. But now that I see little value to this tactic I’m considering not running the next 2. If anyone would like to take a look and offer suggestions please go to https://www.facebook.com/countrycarpet

  • Hi Tom,

I think it is the contest that got you into this situation. First of all the number of fans you have is not enough for a contest to be successful and deliver the desired results. No doubt you will increase the number of likes as most of these are from people who are after the prize. Most of they don’t really care about the page, clearly they are not your target market.

One of the page I managed already have 30K+ fans but we’re still not sure what type of contest will work. Another problem would be the cost of making the contest.

I really like the posts you make on your page though. But I think you haven’t reached the fans that are willing to engage. I think you should do more photos with catchy captions. This shouldn’t be hard because people really love cars.

    I hope this helps.

  • @freddie-blanco @lydiamediavilla @andrea-vahl @kc_kreative thanks for your comments. I’ve taken them all into account and I’m going to just try different angles, with more funny, fun posts mixed with the other things I’ve been doing. I’m also going to start asking more questions and trying to force some engagement.

One thing I haven’t done in the past is use the company’s workforce of sales/admin staff. I think every time I post something fun or a question, I’ll email it around to the staff and get them to engage with it. I’m also going to open it up so they can send me any fun bits of content they’ve found themselves. It’s frustrating but I’m sure I’ll get there in the end (with all of your help, of course!)
