To ”like” or not to ”like” – what’s the best set up? (8 posts)

  • Not sure what you mean, @tasgolabruner – are you talking about should we Like pages?

  • Sorry about the cryptic post, Andrea. The full explanation of my question didn’t get posted into this forum for some technical reason so you only can see the subject heading question. I’ve been in touch with Micheal Stelzner about it.

Basically, I just need to know if I can switch my firm’s facebook page, which is public right now, into a page that you have to first “like” to view. Is that possible?  I’ve heard conflicting information about it. Been told I need an app to do it and I’ve also been told it’s not possible.

And today I had someone on facebook search for my firm’s name and it didn’t come up so I’m now wondering how to fix this because it was set up as a public page by the person who set it up. And advice on this would be appreciated.

I’d like to scrap the page and start over, if I can’t switch it to a “like”- to-view page. I think it’s better to measure how your page is doing as your “likes” grow, instead of having a public page. What are your thoughts?

    Thank you for your time!

  • I’ll try to address your questions.

    1.  Yes.  You can set up your biz page so connections have to Like the page to see the content.  You do that in your settings.  A Welcome page can be set up with an iFrame application and FB pulls the page content from a URL outside of FB, on the internet into the iFrame and that is what the visitor sees (but you need to have some design experience and html knowledge to do this).  Or you can use free or paid applications yourself where they offer templates where you can basically upload images and text into the template boxes to create your page.  Once you have done either of the above, you have to go into your Settings to make the Welcome Page the default where new visitors will land.  Once they hit Like, they can see the content on your business page.

    2.  Facebook search cannot find your business page?  The best way to set up a business page is to create it from your personal account.  And you can create a link in the description under your name on your personal page which will take the people you are connected to straight to your Welcome Page on your biz page.  Look at my personal page:  https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=600761286#!/diane.coville and look at the description below my name.  The link to my biz page is there.  (I always pick and choose who I connect to.  I always look to see if they are in business and check out their business page and often Like their page, depending on my interest.)

Not sure why people cannot find your biz page.  I would have to check it out to let you know.  Would be happy to have a “look see” at no charge to find out what the issue is.

  • Thanks so much, Diane! :) Much appreciated.

I tried the free app recommended by Social Media Examiner (Top 10 Facebook Apps for Building Custom Pages & Tabs) and created through Lujure.com and Involver.com new landing tabs. I’m using one on of them on my biz page but I’m concerned because it looks like a person can still click on “wall” of the page and look at that without having to click “like” first.

Here it is. Would love it if you gave me your thoughts:

    https://www.facebook.com/butlerwooten

By the way, that page was created by someone else and I was made one of the two administrators, so I log in through my personal account to work on it.

I also would like to be able to tag those people in photos and such people who “like” my biz page, like I can through my personal page, but that doesn’t seem to be an option with this biz page.

    Many thanks.

  • Facebook Search is notoriously bad.  Sometimes I type in the EXACT name of a Page and Facebook still can’t find it.  So I don’t have a lot of great suggestions other than to add keywords and repeats your title in the Info tab.

The other issue is that even with a “reveal” tab with “fan-only” content, people can always click on the wall and see your content.  There is no way to completely hide the wall from people since it’s a public page (unless you do something like country restrictions or age restrictions which would make people log into Facebook before viewing your Page to see if they lived in the right country or were the right age – I don’t recommend those).

Some people won’t realize that you can click over to the wall before they click like.

Yes, you are right, you can’t tag people in photos on a Fan Page, they have to tag themselves.

Hope that helps!  Let me know of I missed anything!

  • If you have for example Lujure, you can set all the tab pages you create with Lujure to send non-fans directly to your fan gate. But not the log page since that is Facebook and not Lujure…

You also do not have to be a fan of the page in order to comment etc, when people see their friends actions on your log in their stream, they are free to comment as well. It used to be that you had to go and Like the page first, but that has changed in order to create more interaction and take away obstacles like forcing people to Like first. Makes your “talking about this” higher :-)

  • Thank you, Andrea and Susann! I’m still frustrated with facebook for the above reasons, but I don’t feel as stupid, ha, because now I know that what I’m experiencing is what others experience, not something I was doing wrong or could do better. Whew.

Yeah, Andrea, I’m counting on those people who won’t see the wall before they click “like” – so I can get my numbers up. Oh, the things we do for “likes.”

This is such a great resource! Thank you, thank you!
